Description
The is the 3rd major revision about an idea which started around 2004 after I read rumors that Lockheed Marking is designing a strike pod for the F-22.The basic premise was to expand F-22 strike capability while retaining its supercruise speed and stealth profile via a specially designed pod. The pod was to house both extra fuel an select types of guided munition in a very tight and low drag profile. The major breakthrough that I belie makes it possible is the 2 pylon mounting solution.
This approach has 3 main advantages.
- allows much heavier and capable solution to be designed
- provides increases sturdiness and stability
- preserves LO angles
While version 1 and 2 of the design could carry AMRAAMs, a choice was made to eliminate that capability in favor of slimming the design as much as possible and optimizing it for strike only. F-22 carries sufficient air to air missiles by itself.
F-22 and F/A-18E Hornet having 2 adjacent weapons mounting points each rated at 5,000lb were the target platforms for this strike pod.
I may have previously uploaded a version of this on the secretprojects.co.uk forum but removed it as I believed it was worth patenting and publishing it may prevent from any company to develop a similar solution. At the time I really wanted to be an aerospace engineer.
Ever since Boing introduced the Super Hornet Upgrade options in 2012 with their strike pod, I was compelled to dig into my archives and publish this.
More than a decade away after I though of it, I think its still relevant and may yet see the light of day in one form or another.
Disclaimer: I am still not an engineer in life and this concept remains a fan fiction and however well though out it may look.

God lord, this is incredible! You've clearly put a lot of work into this, I can't see anything wrong with the concept either. Tell me you're making more like this?!

I did this in 2007. A lot of it is vector graphics I have reused in other projects. Yes, there are a few more . I will get to upload them eventually ... So stay tuned

In 2013 Boeing released info on its Advanced Super Hornet program with the Enclosed Weapons Pod among the main upgrades. An image of it can be found here.

Boeing design is shorter, much lighter and made for subsonic aircraft and carriage by just 1 pylon. It could potentially be carried by most US fighters so its much more versatile in purpose. It is much closer to the original design Lockheed tested for the F-22.

I am happy I was somewhat close to the idea of how such a pod could function internally.
