Description Edit: No way! A DD, my first one! THANK YOU!!!

Alcedo atthis, Eurasian Kingfisher, diving for a snack. These birds are incredible fishers, I've watched them diving on documentary films and it's a truly impressive sight. I really don't know how the photograph I used for ref was done. But the result is stunning and it was a pleasure to paint.

I focused most of my attention on the bubbles here. They took much of my imagination and inventiveness, and a few unsuccessful trials of the highlighting, until I finally got that look. Enjoy!

Thank you! Do they really call it that way?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MiguelFight In reply to lapis-lazuri [2013-10-07 11:04:37 +0000 UTC]

Yes, we do! But this is literally translated! I didn't knew how the beautifull-tiny-silverblued-jetspeed-bird is it called in english! But now i know!
I used to watch these birds when i was a kid, while i was fishing from the river shore. They would fly so fast, that most of times i could only notice a sort of blue litghtning passing in my wide line of sight, going up or down river.

lapis-lazuri In reply to MiguelFight [2013-10-07 11:34:35 +0000 UTC]

This is so interesting! What does it sound like in Portuguese? In my language it is a "king fisher" or "earth-bourne fisher" (or something like that, it can't be directly translated).

Lucky you!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MiguelFight In reply to lapis-lazuri [2013-10-15 22:51:42 +0000 UTC]

In portuguese, his name is written like this "Guarda-Rios".
"King Fisher" translated to portuguese sounds kinda biblical or something: "Rei Pescador"...
"Earth-bourne fisher" sounds like a natural born fish killer! It suits him nicely as well!
Unfortunately, due to wood cutting around here, it's been 2 or 3 years since the last time i've noticed that bird...

lapis-lazuri In reply to MiguelFight [2013-10-16 11:15:18 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! And in Bulgarian the "river guard" would sound like "rechen pazitel" "Kingfisher" translates as "kralsko ribarche" and the Bulgarian name is "zemerodno ribarche" (all pronounced just as they are written). I don't know about you, but I very much enjoy such trans-lingual plays

Oh, this is so sad.... At least I hope they planted new trees, in my country they often destroy forests just to substitute them with ugly buildings....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MiguelFight In reply to lapis-lazuri [2013-10-20 23:41:51 +0000 UTC]

Yes, is very interesting indeed!
Well, due to financial crisis we're living on, people started to take advantage from wild trees around the river bank for fire-wood. As you can realize, this bird bird habitat got compromised so, no wonder it gets harder to spot that little "blue lightning" bird...

That's so irritating!! That's too bad! and i guess they don't plant trees in the streets, do they?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lapis-lazuri In reply to MiguelFight [2013-10-24 10:47:37 +0000 UTC]

This is awful. But it is also dangerous. Riverside trees support the river banks and protect them from erosion. If they are all cut down, then the river may get silt up by the deposits; then one heavy rain - and you get a massive flood. Believe me, I've seen all this happen a thousand times in Bulgaria. And they still don't comprehend why and how it happens....

There's usually no space for trees, no green space at all. And even if there were, how can a street with tree linings substitute a natural ecosystem.
