Description
This is a quilted wallhanging I made which took a first place at the Minnesota State Fair. Adding together the time spent thinking about and designing this quilt, finding the fabrics and actually making it, the 43 1/2" square wallhanging took one year to complete.*EDIT: November 5th 2006: I'm happily surprised to have this quilt featured as a DD.
Many thanks to ~MN-Vixen for suggesting it and to `dedredhed for featuring it.

Yes, I agree! And I was on the page answering you! It's not like I'm OCD or anything! 1...2...3...4...
(They'll keep climbing until midnight! Then it's G'Night Gracie! Poof! But until then, "you GO girl!")

Yeah, I know how it peters out: I had a DD in May for a fractal and watched as the numbers dwindled to nothing. It's Cinderella and the pumpkin big time!

Well, doesn't it stand to reason that something that won a State Fair 1st place ribbon would stand out in any crowd? I know it isn't what you usually do here, but good god woman, it's gorgeous! You should have been expecting it! I'm just surprised it took this long!

No problem. I'm just so immensely impressed. I mean my grandmother does some amazing quits, and even made me one that is like op art. But my God. You just went to the next level with quilting!

Wow, that's beautiful. My mom used to quilt, but she never made an "art quilt" like this. You did a wonderful job of coordinating the palette of colors. They blend so well, it almost looks like paint.

This is a well-deserved DD, so much work put into it. I really admire that.
One question: Why did you name it Postcards From The Edge? Just two days ago I read the hilarious sequence of fake letters on [link] exactly about that, and I'm wondering what's the connection...?

Thanks for the wonderful comment on my quilt!
Someone else asked the same question regarding the title, so I'm pasting my earlier answer:
I knew the title of Carrie Fisher's book and it perfectly expressed how I saw the quilt: to me, it looks like a group of photos taken in space. I thought it looked like the sort of thing you'd send back to the family at home when you were on a vacation to the edges of the galaxy. "Look what we saw today!", etc.

Wonderful work, Kat! I love quilts, and yours has the added benefit of being a quilt that looks like fractals!
Yay!

Thank you very much!
I think that's one reason why I took to fractals so thoroughly: the two things remind me of each other. I keep attempting to replicate quilts with fractals and have gotten sort of close once or twice.

Thanks so much, Bret!
I started quilting about ten years ago or so, but I haven't made one since I became smitten with fractals. This was uploaded soon after I came to dA and I just thought of it as something in the back of my gallery. I never ever expected to see this as a DD. Wow.

How cool is that. My ma and sisterinlaw are quilters. I have seen so many photos from quilting exibitions. Quilting is really big in Hawaii also. Alot of quilter dig me patterns, ya know. Congrats again on the DD. If it were ever ta happen to me I'd never know it. I rarely check the DDs. You'd tell me, right?

'Traditional' Hawaiian quilting is beyond me...how they can make those incredible designs from just one piece of fabric astonishes me no end. Absolutely amazing.
You've been around quilters for a while since there a few in the family! Most men know nothing at all about it except that quilts go on a bed.
Thanks again...and I'd run to your page and tell you right away! I promise.

That's more than some people know. Most people think quilts are just for keeping warm, but quilters have been pouring their creativity into them from the beginning. And there are some truly incredible things being done in quilting these days. I'm in awe of some of the quilts I've seen.

You really do know Minneapolis! You may not remember it well enough to picture this, but I live right on the edge of downtown, near Loring Park in a neighborhood filled with older apartment buildings.
Thanks again for the kudos on my quilt. I've found that I have much more patience for making things than I usually seem to have for people, especially as I get older. After all, fabric isn't rude..

~~After all, fabric isn't rude..~ you got that right sistah!!
Yea, I remember that area, vaguely but I seem to remember it. My late step-uncle was a cop and his wife worked @ the large Sears bldg downtown. ( I think it was Sears anyway)
My other grandmother lived in St. Paul in a really old house and I remember that house quite well I loved the house but she was kinda mean.
Funny thing is that Ive never been to Mall of America Ive heard thats quite the site! Hopefully I will get back up that way some time...Its quite far from where Im @ now in Louisiana
Lake Minetonka is way cool though and we had a major fishing trip there for 3 days one time and had a huge fish fry from the catch. Sunfish and perch were all you can catch back then I still remember how yummy that was LOL
Oh, BTW...did you win any ribbons @ the fair for the quilt??? You had to have! Its georgous

You had one of those mean grandmothers, too, huh?
The MOA is really a lot of fun, no matter what anyone may say differently. I got so used to the size of it, every other mall looked tiny and a bit silly to me. If you get back here sometime, definitely go to the Mall.
I remember eating lots of sunnies when I was a kid. I never even minded the 9,876,348 bones in every single fish.
I took a first place for this quilt at the fair. I didn't know about it until one of my sisters called me from the fair and screamed it into the phone.

That's what I get for looking at the DDs so early in the morning; I didn't notice it then.
This is amazing. I've always loved quilts and once that are "outta the box," which this one is. I love the shapes and the colors.
Now...after winning first place at the state fair and a DD, will you now consider yourself an artist...? If not, I still will...
