Description
This is a quilted wallhanging I made which took a first place at the Minnesota State Fair. Adding together the time spent thinking about and designing this quilt, finding the fabrics and actually making it, the 43 1/2" square wallhanging took one year to complete.*EDIT: November 5th 2006: I'm happily surprised to have this quilt featured as a DD.
Many thanks to ~MN-Vixen for suggesting it and to `dedredhed for featuring it.

Congratulations to the DD

Thanks for the comment, Barb! It's made of 100% cotton and I made it about two years ago, before I got seduced by fractals.
Thanks for the congrats, too, hon!

It's amazing what we did before, isn't it? Before we got busy, before we got addicted to fractals, before whatever. I feel much less productive than I did when I was quilting, because then when I finished something, I could see it, touch it, give it as a gift. Now, all my creativity goes into a folder on my computer.

Yes exactly. I noticed recently that I start to miss the satisfaction I had after finishing a sweater with a complicated pattern that I had designed myself.

I believe that we pour more of ourselves into tangible things than we do into a fractal. When we design something and make it from scratch, there's a real sense of accomplishment that comes when we finish it. I know exactly what you mean.

That was smart of you! You have things you can hold in your hand now rather than just a virtual piece of art.

Yes it is. It takes time and effort and a bit of ourselves to create anything.

You are a person of many talents! Congrats on your DD!
This looks like it could have been one of your beautiful fractals that you create! As a crafter, I recognize the time you put into this piece....not only the sewing.....but the designing, finding the right combination of color and design in the material used, and the preparation of cutting the material! I'm not surprised by either the State Fair win or the DD....this is not only beautiful but very original!

That's so nice of you, Sue! Thank you for a very flattering comment. I also really appreciate the fav on this.
I was truly shocked about the DD, as I uploaded this last spring and thought it was hidden away in the depths of my gallery. I guess someone found it!
Thanks again, hon!

It must have been in the back, I know I didn't start watching you until a couple of months ago and when I go to someones gallery for the first time I only look at the first couple of pages if they have a large gallery. So I must not have gotten back to it, unless I was just looking at "fractals" and that's why I missed it.
But it really is deserving of the DD! and the fav! Congrats again!

was going to ask why you had named the quilt what you have named it, as it is the title of a book.
Brilliant colours...if only I had 48 hours in each day...first 24 for normal stuff...second 24...to do all those things I'd love to do if only I had time. Quilting is one of them.

I knew the title of Carrie Fisher's book and it perfectly expressed how I saw the quilt: to me, it looks like a group of photos taken in space. I thought it looked like the sort of thing you'd send back to the family at home when you were on a vacation to the edges of the galaxy. "Look what we saw today!", etc.
Quilting is indeed very time-consuming and I haven't made anything in over a year now.
Thanks for the look and the comment on this

Wow - like a painting of planets made with bits of material. Just mind-blowing. Just the colors in the thumbnail caught my eye first.
I'm going to have to send a quilt-making friend here to look at this.

Ah well, I'm a big science fiction/astronomy fan - so they stood right out to me. This would be right at home in the spacescapes gallery; unfortunately, 3D digital art is the only one with that category.
And I love catching artwork done outside the typical media.

Very nice piece...it's gorgeous. Very rich and deeply textured looking. I have an interest in quilting since finding out I have the same name as a famous quilter. Since it's an unusual name, I find that bizarre as hell.

If you know who Louisa Smith is, then you probably recognize this design as she's the person who came up with this concept. The basic pattern is called Strips and Curves and she has a book and a website by that name.
