Description My pimped version of a technical drawing of an old hydraulic system in an industrial building in my town, Antwerp, in Belgium. The building used to be an energy plant, but is nowadays a cultural center.

"Zuiderpershuis" means "South Press House".

The original image was a complicated black and white technical drawing and the people there asked me to do an update, to make it easier and more fun for kids to learn about the workings of the machine.

Black Staedtler pen 0.3, A4 paper size, colours in photoshop

actually I thought this was pretty interesting. You might know I love machines . For the people who like to go more into detail on how this works, I'll explain a bit more here.
It's the exact same system here in Antwerp that is used in London to open The London Bridge.

It's a simple, yet very clever hydraulic system that can be seen as the predecessor of an electricity network. The machine here was built somewhere in the 1800s and provided energy to make hundreds of machines work in the docks of Antwerp without having to use manpower.

on the right, clean water goes into a giant kettle that is being heated for 3 days before it reaches the right amount of pressure. From then on, workers need to keep the fire burning, adding coal that was brought there by train to a giant oven underneath, day and night.

The steam is captured and used to fuel the steam engine, comparable with a steam train. This one pumps water from the river through a complex plumbing system with a pressure pump and a giant weight on the left that floats on a very small amount of water.
When under pressure, liquids produce the same amount of pressure everywhere. Because of the weight, there's pressure on the water in the plumbing system that goes on for miles and miles underground. Whenever someone needs energy to make a bridge go up or crane lift something, they just open a little gate from the plumbing system to let water gush out. The hydraulic system here will take care of the loss of pressure somewhere else.

Everyone at the energy plant got paid a lot compared to other workers in the docklands. This was because there were a lot of strikes. The energy plant however could not afford one, because hundreds of machines in the docklands then would be out of power.

Hope that was informative to some of you

thx ! it's a really functional drawing, but it's meant to be more fun than the average instructional functional drawing

well, yeah, it was really fun to do, although I like really complex random or impossible machines as well.
Now I had to do the opposite. thx for the nice words, especially on the colours, because those took me hours to be satisfied with.
I only slept an hour and a half that day before going to work, it was ouchy

the dedication to your craft truely shows! what little sleep you got that night, you made up with superb-ness in this illustration.

and I agree, machines are awesome. especially ones that are overly complex like rube goldberg machines.

TOTALLY FUCKING YES. man, we should really really work together soon or in real life!

Papposilenos In reply to laresistance [2011-02-01 15:41:14 +0000 UTC]

yes! i agree!

speaking of rube goldberg machines and collaboration, wouldn't it be cool to do a collaboration of a rube goldberg machine and each person has to draw the next part of it (and since the whole point of a RG machine is to be mis-matched, then it would totally work)

just an idea, but i like your idea of collaborating in person!!!!!!!

i want to go to belgium!!!

wow yeah, that's a great idea !
and of course, collaboration in person.
not sure yet, but there is a slight chance I come visit Memphis in March, to help out alex warble with his mural, but nothing is certain yet.
I am pretty fond of the impulsive idea though.
and you're always welcome here, man ! unfortunately with me working during the week now it's a bit more difficult, but I might take a break or something.

i learned something new today: work in a power plant if you want great benefits

this is awesome, by the way. would make learning technical crap way more fun if you did these drawings for everyone. you should try and get some of your drawings sent to the hoover dam

haha, yeah. I knew that, but it's not without risk ( well, if it's nuclear that is ). If you clean the radioactive chamber here in Antwerp of the nuclear power plant you get paid 35.000 dollar per hour. But you can only be inside for one hour ( with pauses in between ), because the radiation is so high.

thx for the nice words ! I think my improvement worked. Of course you still need an explanation to go with this drawing. It's meant to serve as a tool.
Hoover Dam is a fantastic idea ! And actually, I think there's loads of companies that could benefit from more fun technical drawings. you gave me a great idea, buddy

definitely. I mean, especially places that serve an educational purpose as well as a utilitarian one. places that offer lots of tours, and therefore get a lot of families and children.
