"Valkyria, Valkyria May the bloodline live foreverValkyria, Valkyria Bless and protect our fertile land
Faith to this land of mine Of the ancient Valkyrur line"
-Excerpt from the Royal Anthem of the Principality of Gallia-
OverviewThe Principality of Gallia (also known as Duchy of Gallia) is a small but formidable independent country in Europa that borders the Saxon Empire to the East, Nordic Kingdoms to the Northeast and Atlantic Federation in the West.
A hereditary constitutional monarchy, Gallia is ruled by House of Randgriz-Orange, with their ancestry can be traced back to a legendary hero of the ancient War of the Valkyrur hailed from the Orange province in modern day Valois, legends told that after the war, he built a castle on the site that is now the capital city Randgriz in the 3rd Century, establishing the seat of the modern Principality.
Until the 17th century, the Low Land region of Europa was a tributary state and a protectorate of the Habsburg's Hispanian Empire. However increasing resentments towards the Hispanian authority and Catholic persecutions of Yggdism lead to discontents against the Austrian administration.
In 1560, unhappy with the treatments of the Catholics towards Gallian Yggdists and the high taxations imposed on Gallia, the then-Gallian King William of Randgriz-Orange renounced his crown. With the support of the Gallian nobility, he became the Archduke of the newly founded Duchy of Gallia and chose to side with his people. As Archduke, he successfully led his people in the fight against their former Habsburgs masters and was widely regarded as the Founding Father of the very first irregular Gallian Militia Corps.
Although responsible for Gallia independence, Archduke William never got to see the fruit of his labor. In 1863, a year after the Proclamation of Gallia’s Independence, he was assassinated by an Austrian loyalist named Balthazar while on his way to attend a meeting with Polanian and Sardegnan delegates.
In the aftermath of the war for its independence, a modern Principality of Gallia was born, characterized by its armed neutrality policies and a universal conscription system. It is notable amongst smaller independent states for its success in declining to ally themselves to any superpowers that border it.
In spite of its size compared to other Europan powers, Gallia controlled a sizable network of global seafaring trade routes in the Far East. Through its trading company, the Gallian East Company (GEC), a small Gallian colonial empire in the Asiatic region was established in the late 18th century.
This influx of trade revenue combined with its large mineral deposits, particularly Ragnite allowed Gallia to compete militarily against much larger countries of the continent.
The official currency of Gallia is Ducat.
MilitaryDue to its small population, Gallia has a modest military size compared to other Europan powers. As a result, it relied heavily on conscription to replenish its fighting strength in wartime. Gallia is also known to have compulsory basic weapons training in schools, colleges, even universities to ensure every Gallian is ready to be drafted at any time.
As a result of an emphasis on defensive doctrines, most Gallian tanks are designed around the hit-and-run tactics. Boasting high mobility and relatively powerful guns for their size, Gallian tanks are designed around the wolf-pack tactics, outmaneuvering and ambushing their larger opponents.
The most numerous Gallian light tank, the Char Leger Mod 08 of the Great War era is a clear example of said doctrine, well known for its versatility, ease of production and a modern powered turret design mounting a relatively powerful 75mm infantry gun. It was highly favoured by the Gallian military and even adopted by other nation militaries, especially for the Saxonian Empire and the Atlantic Federation who fielded them in reserve units or allocated them to defend colonial garrisons in the Alkebulan continent and the Far East.
Although there have been numerous proposals for larger offensive-oriented vehicles, Gallia's military council still vetoed all of those suggestions in favor of maintaining the defensive doctrines that had protected their country during the Great War. This specialization in defensive warfare led to Gallian tanks generally suffered from a lack of armor protection and firepower, by early 1920s, the majority of Gallia’s tank force had been deemed as somewhat dated against the rapid development pace of a new generations of mechs and tanks deployed by other nations with increasingly better protection and firepower that negated the Gallian’s usual defensive hit-and-run tactics.
Gallian mechs focused on the similar doctrines like their tank counterrparts. This led to their early mechs being largely influenced by Polanian designs, lightly armored, hard-hitting mechs with reconnaissance capability. The very first Gallian mechs like those used by nations of the Atlantic Federation, are license-built variants of Polanian light mech models like PZM-9 Straznik and PZM-7 Smialy, in Gallia.
By the time of the Great War, Gallia had produced a new light mech design under the name Canon d'Assaut Mod 02 “Antwerp”. A Great War era self-propelled assault gun design, while its thin armor makes it vulnerable to artillery, anti-tank weapons and mines, it was well regarded by the crew and the infantry, armed with a QF 75mm howitzer, it boasts superior firepower than any contemporary Gallian AFVs while still maintain a light weight and good mobility.
In addition to its original assault gun role, the Antwerp was also found to be particularly effective as a tank destroyer and would still remain competitive against more modern tanks and mechs designs of the 1920s. Despite its effectiveness, the Antwerp was never employed en-masse.
An explaination for this is the resource priority for the Principality’s warships and airships, resulting developments and productions of Gallian mechs lagged behind other powers in the continent. Having no heavy mech units, Gallian mech tactics generally centered around a slightly updated plan of their defensive doctrines that involved lightly armored automachines with anti-infantry and reconnaissance capabilities operating in tandem with their fast tanks.
