This is so gorgeous, as was your previous piece with Tom Riddle. They're absolutely perfect!

I like the lighting a lot, how it comes slightly from behind. The atmosphere is completely rihgt too! With all of these books. I do think he'd spend quite a bit of time in the library. But what are those books? Not exactly books on magic are they? Framed & Fractured? Something with poetry? ... oh wait! The fanfic you're inspired by! Now I get it... It's a great story

Out of curiosity, is this completely grey, or is it slighlty blue? I can't really tell. I think it's a bit bluish, right?

Do you have this on tumblr? Or would you be okay if I shared it from here? It'd be linked back here of course. I'd love to let the poeople who follow my Tomarry blog see this.

Thank you for your comment! As for the colour, I painted it in greyscale first then placed a colour tint on top when I was done.

Yes, the author is my friend I don't have a Tumblr account, but the picture has already been posted by the author from her account. It can be reblogged from her page at antediluvian-poet.tumblr.com. Credit has been given with the post.

Thank you for asking first and good luck with your blog!

Cheers,

I am absolutely in love with this portrayal of Riddle. He is so human in this picture, but still giving off that cold brilliance I've always associated with his character. I also think the colour scheme sets the mood for the picture in a wonderful way, and his eyes are absolutely mesmerising. Also, a shoutout to the wonderful background, it's absolutely stunning.

Yayyy I remember we had a discussion with your last Tom Riddle artwork for Framed and Fractured (you probs don't cus I'm forgettable like that...)

Anyway I'm glad you did ANOTHER one!!!

Guess I have a few stuff to say so I'll just number them

#1 You're such a good friend I wish I had a friend to do awesome artwork for my fanfiction!!! I'm sooo jealous of Antediluvian Poet!

#2 Just some praise for this artwork...you did SO well painting the background I love  how you did the books I'm weird for focusing on the background but I just like how you made it look like a believable library at Hogwarts where it just had rows and rows of books up to the ceiling. And I love the touch you did with books at the front labelled "AD Poet" and "Fractured" that's a perfect shoutout to your friend and her fanfic. (You're sooo sweet)

#3 Just some critcisms....Um...I gotta say that I don't really like the way you painted Tom Riddle in this one. For several reasons....

a) if you compare the OLD Tom Riddle you did for Frame and Fractured and this New Tom Riddle you did for Framed and Fractured....THEY DON'T EVEN LOOK LIKE THE SAME PERSON!!! Like seriously if you compare them they look completely different....they don't even have the same hairstyle (old Tom had wavy hair and bangs) this Tom has straight hair and no bangs...they dont have the same face eyes nose or lips...they just look different from eachother even though your supposed to be painting the SAME PERSON

b) This new Tom Riddle you did...doesn't even look like a teenager...if you look at him he looks like a grown man...like his face is very mature looking, and older. He looks like he's in his twenties not a young teenager...like I don't buy him being a student at all he looks like he'd be the actual librarian lol

c) Umm this is a REALLY minor criticism but I hate how you didn't give him a Slytherin uniform or his Prefect badge thats CENTRAL to Tom's look. And its not there. It WAS there in the old art you did of him but you didn't do it in the new one so it looks like Tom is missing his "armour" so to speak. That Slytherin uniform and Prefect badge gave him a powerful look and he looks weaker without it and THIS artwork NEEDED that powerful look in my opinion. Because this is supposed to be Tom in his element at Hogwarts surrounded by books in the library. But he's not even wearing his Slytherin uniform or his Prefect badge so it takes away from the power of this artwork.

D) The cold look in Tom's eyes is not as intense as the old one Tom Riddle art where you had him giving the viewer a death glare behind the diary.... but in this one you can see a gleam in his cold eyes as he peers at you through the book shelf..... so he's still got that dangerous aura...but his eyes don't have that same intensity as it did in the old one....like if you wanted you could have played with the idea of Voldemort/Tom having red eyes from the horcruxes and looking at you from behind the bookshelf with scary red eyes

But you didn't do that and Tom just kinda looks...flat...like he's just standing there in the middle of a library...he's not even reading in the library (like Tom would be)...he's just doing nothing...

I don't want to say that it's "boring"

Its just not in Tom's character...like its not scary its not intimidating like Tom Riddle is SUPPOSED to be as a villian....

But yeah...those A B C and D points are my only criticisms I DO feel like the Tom you did was attractive he's not ugly or anything I just feel like it wasn't as attractive as the old one and you didn't capture Tom as well as you did in the first one.

But I want to say that I'm NOT trying to be rude or insult you and say your a bad artist...i still think this is a very good artwork..just as someone who is a huge Harry Potter fan and Tom Riddle fan...I know this one could have been done better than it was. (no offence)

You BASICALLY painted Tom as just a dude looking at you behind a bookshelf

But I still think its sooo incredibly sweet that you did this for your friend a second time. Thats probably my favorite part of this artwork its just a very nice thing to do to honour your friend's fanfiction. And I'm favoriting this and going to go read her new chapter!

oh my god what a colossally useless critic that completely disregards the effort and skill put into this painting for...what YOU wanted to see instead? if you want to see all that, paint something yourself, don't try to bring someone else down under the pretense of a "critic"
it wasn't even a critic it was simply you nitpicking all the things you would've preferred to see different.

LAS-T In reply to ArisenKikyou [2016-07-07 16:11:10 +0000 UTC]

The author and I knew this artwork would revolve around on one central word:

'Human'.

There are so many 'villain' Toms that it's become trite. This artwork was a breakaway from the norm - the power in this piece in his calm, his carefully constructed politeness and his sharp professionalism.

He's not supposed to be like my previous artwork. Actually it was quite important that he wasn't like 'Riddle'.

His uniform is not armour.
His mind is.
So painting his Slytherin uniform and prefect badge is completely irrelevant.

It's common to see a red-eyed, smirking/glaring portrayal of him. But it's rarer to see the boy before the mutated creature he would become. You mentioned he was 'supposed to be a villain' but he's not. Voldemort was the villain. Tom is just a schoolboy - a schoolboy with hauntingly beautiful potential and seeing this 'human' Tom is supposed to highlight the tragedy of such a brilliant boy eaten by the dark.

This artwork is to show Tom on a human level.

Nothing more. Nothing less.

Thank you for the honest review, I appreciate it.

Sorry I took so long before replying I've been busy during the 4th of July holidays here.

I want to thank you for giving me more insight into you and your friends intentions behind this artwork.

It all makes to me sense now. And I think you both had a great idea to compare the Light/Dark sides of Tom Riddle.

I wish you had written that in the description.

Because that would have made me see what you were trying to do.

Instead of me just seeing Tom Riddle as the young Lord Voldemort...

But now that you tell me you were trying to portray Tom not as Lord Voldemort but as the human schoolboy he was, I can definitely see that in the artwork and I must say you did an EXCELLENT job!

I love your artwork and I can tell you put so much thought into them when you paint.

I always try to give a little of that back to you by giving an honest review.

My objective is to give you my thoughts in hope that it can help you improve your artwork.

Not just write a one sentence comment like I've seen other do.

To me when a great artlist like yourself paints something you deserve a genuine response.

I've been criticized by your other viewers because of it. (below)

But I hope you don't take offense to me.

I'm only trying to help as a supportive follower of yours.

P.S.

I loved your friends new Framed & Fractured chapter. I do hope you and her continue to work together in the future. I look forward to seeing more of both of your works.

If I CAN make a suggestion? I would love to see you paint the subject of her fanfic:             Harry Potter trapped in the painting. Which maybe Tom looking over at him from his desk?

Wow.

Couldn't help but notice your giant wall of text.

I read it through and I kinda disagree with you.

From what I understand, this artwork was deliberately painted to be different from the first one - because their function is inherently different.

The first 'Riddle' artwork was supposed to be glamorous and overtly beautiful. This artwork - which is also beautiful - is NOT supposed to be as romanticised. From what I can tell, the artist was conveying a secret moment in time, a candid shot of a schoolboy in a library.

It's supposed to be clam and less intense. It's supposed to be mundane - as you call 'boring'.

I think there is a kind of beauty in his serenity - especially since we have pre-knowledge of his sociopathic personality.

The juxtaposition is quite effective.

I understand want you meant in your comment.

But I also think you sort of totally missed the point.

P.S your comment: "I'm NOT trying to be rude or insult you..." - Just thought this was sort off funny since you were rather careless with restraining your passive aggression. This isn't a personal attack on you by the way, I just found this interesting enough to debate on. And I found you amusing.

ArisenKikyou In reply to Ekko-Blue [2016-07-10 20:34:27 +0000 UTC]

Wow I didn't expect my comment to get someone else's attention other than the artist. O.O

But thanks for replying.

Sorry I took a few days to respond. I've been very busy.

To try to explain my comment a little more...(I'm re-reading what I wrote before and trying to see what's confusing you about it)

From what I can see from your reply I think you misunderstood my intentions...

The reason I wrote a long comment is that I've been really into critiquing artwork lately.

If I like the artist and I like their work...

I like to honour that artist by trying to REALLY give my thoughts on their artwork.

I give my positive thoughts on it: what I liked about their artwork, what stood out to me, etc

I also try to give as much criticism as I can.

I believe artists NEED criticism so they can get better.

So if I see something in their artwork that I have criticism on I point that out.

I'm not coming on Deviantart and insulting them. (thats a waste of my time)

I write as much as I can on what I think they could have done to make their artwork BETTER.

(and you see that in my post that's WHY its so detailed)

There are TONS of artwork on Deviantart you can tell the artist spent HOURS on it.

But people just reply with one sentence?

I think its funny you don't see that as "careless" or "restraining passive aggression."

But when you see someone like me trying to actually give feedback you find me "amusing."

Well...ok.

Ironically in your long reply to me you actually gave your own detailed critique on this artwork.

Which also is contributing to the artist.

So thanks!
