Description Long Story Short:

introduced an art book. I did not like it. Here is a criticism of it.  is going to shank me when she sees me next.

School starts again. That means I am only active on the weekend. 1 picture per week. Go fulfill your New Years Resolutions.

I learned the definition of "shank" recently. It apparently means to break off something, sharpen it, and then stab someone with it. Does that mean that if you pierce someone's body with a pencil, you just "stabbed" them, but if you break the pencil in half and then sharpen its broken piece and then pierce the person, you "shanked" them?

i could read your writings over and over again! but i also like the drawings.

Oh and i have met some people that thought that they cant draw anything, i tried to convince them, but i failed/surrendered. I guess there are people, who just dont like to draw, like some people just dont like tomatoes, or green. There is nothing wrong with that, they can do everything else they want, except its to difficult.

So i agree, who needs such kind of books? o.o

I think if you stabbed someone with an improvised/selfmade knife you shanked him or her, am i wrong? Did you already got shanked?

Laugh-Butts In reply to Rethandris [2015-01-20 14:10:10 +0000 UTC]

I got shanked with two pointy fingers back in high school. But now, I realize that is not "shank." That guy would have to break off part of his fingers, sharpen the human bone, and then stab me with it to "shank" me. Which would be morbid, but true to the art of shanking.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rethandris In reply to Laugh-Butts [2015-01-21 15:39:22 +0000 UTC]

that is true,

but what about long (very long) pointy sharpened fingernails? Maybe half as long as the used finger.

you could stab the target and then let them break at a predetermined breaking point.

of course, you need to aim at an unarmored points, like the eyes, but never the nose.

This book, I understand your pain, I hate these kind of books.
They need to burn.
And might I say that this entire thing made me laugh, especially that you did it all in 3.6 hours looool take that society.
AND THE ANT BLUEPRINTS. AH.
I did that too XD
Except mine would be mutant spider-people, where they had webs/silk threads coming out of their stick figure butts, and would fight each other with their supa awesome swords while trying to capture the princess XD
Anywaaaaaaaaay I applaud you for actually going through with this o.e
I would end up chucking the book out the window and flipping every table in the room c:

And what is worse is that I'm interested in getting an art degree at the University later, AND IF THEY FREAKING FORCE ME TO USE A BOOK LIKE THIS, I'M GONNA THROW MY PENCILS ON THE FLOOR AND TRICK MY WAY INTO THAT DEGREE, MAN

BOOKS LIKE THIS, TELLING ARTISTS THAT BEING MORE ARTISTIC IS ABOUT LEFT AND RIGHT BRAIN? THEY MIGHT AS WELL SEPARATE THE LEFT AND RIGHT HANDED PEOPLE AND CLAIM ONE IS MORE CREATIVE THAN THE OTHER. THIS COMPLETELY GOES AGAINST THE IDEA OF HOW KINDERGARTEN TAUGHT YOU TO ALWAYS TRY, AND EVERYBODY IS AN ARTIST, AS LONG AS PEOPLE TRY, BECAUSE EVERYBODY HAS POTENTIAL. I LIKE KINDERGARTEN LESSONS BETTER

SOME OF THESE EXERCISES/ASSIGNMENTS WERE COOL THOUGH. LIKE DRAWING BACKWARDS, BECAUSE THAT SURE HELPED ME DRAW...NORMALLY! RIGHT?

It's always a good idea to start with some knowledge, something to get you started and in some cases, it's a really, really good idea to work at something and use good documentation or the advice of someone that better knows about it especially when there are certain risks involved because you will form yourself as a individual on that basis and sometimes, reforming something deformed is difficult. But in the case of art I think you should go by yourself because what you draw is what you express from inside and I agree with most of what Butts said, it depends on what you're looking for. My personal opinion is that if you have problems coloring or making things more expressive and interesting it's because you are too scared to ruin a "perfect" drawing and it will drag you down instead of making you grow and you might end up finding it dull and boring and you might give up. Colors and shapes are something you should feel! For right-brained dependent peopel I'd' say they should try some actual drawing of proportions and study, use some logic and technicality indrawing. I'm right-brained for the most part (Wait I think logical most of the time but for most times my emotions get the better of me) D:S ... Practicing drawings is what I feel I need to make me better and I know I can get to a higher step by knowing the and practicing the rules although I'm conscious of the fact I don't need them.

You are more than a left and right brain!

If you want to be imaginative I recommend taking some of those but not recommend it to anyone that doesn't wish to hurt his brain and body and  forcefully  alter his consciousness! Don't try it!

listverse.com/2008/05/11/top-1…

Butt's, do you really have to draw penis on your... you don't see me drawing... make that your signiture from now on!

I like that wrinkle left hand.

Congratulations, that's your first selfie but next time try not to smile so much, it breaks the camera's lens! And welcome to the club dead eyes; although to me they look like they're shining with life.

ALRIGHT. HERE'S MY TWO CENTS.

I don't believe there's a RIGHT way to learn art, but for those who maybe are out of ideas for practice or have no idea where to start, this might be a good place to start. Do I think that what it's promising is bullshit? Yeah. Do I think it's completely worthless? Not necessarily. I admit I didn't actually read everything, but some of seems like it would be useful (e.g. the light/shadow game, 2-point perspective, the profile view). The contour one is absolute bullshit if you're not looking though at the paper though.

I remember doing that vase one in my elementary school art class! I thought it was stupid. Still do.

Now for your next challenge. Try this book. cl.ly/0I1u2r0Y1V1K?_ga=1.22759…

The artist really likes to make her uke's essentially flat-chested girls with penises. It's really soft-core, so I'm not surprised if there's no steamy sex poses in there. I do not try to offended, home spice. I notice when something is wrong, I research it, I check my sources, I try a book, and then I critique it. Her constant attention to "shifting" artistic thought so we can use our creative side is fine, but constantly making the distinction of the "split brain" is enough to say that her science is wrong in a fundamentals course. When you do a creative process, both sides of the brain have been proven to fire interchangeably depending on what the action is, and some "logical" actions can actually even be considered "creative" to the brain. Humans were the ones that deemed something more logical than the next. And calling the different hemispheres sides that pick and choose depending on which one is more motivated to work with the signal is WRONG. Once again, this alludes to why she keeps talking about "tricking" and pushing our thoughts towards the right side. SHE IS BASICALLY SAYING THAT THERE IS A DISTINCTION OF LEFT AND RIGHT BRAIN (if she is not, then there is no reason for so much emphasis on the left and right brain debate. She could have simply explained the brain as a whole, and lets us as artists to determine if we are more inclined to do something or not. It has already been proven that this neuroscience talk on these two intellectual sides of you can be debunked, so I saw no reason why she AND MANY OTHER ARTISTS/TEACHERS (not just her, mind you) bring up the left and right brain concepts. At this point, we are still learning so much about the brain and debunking so many things we knew before that this topic was almost completely irrelevant. It was an attempt to bring the thought that just maybe we could understand our brains enough to then become an artist as long as we know we are doing something to shift it, and I agree that some of these practices do push us to think differently, which is great for those practicing new ways to look at art, but explaining it was a "right brain" activity is wrong and misleading.

I said that you can fall in a dark hole of not knowing what to do next after this book is over, not that they will only look at studies. Seriously, where did I even...? Since the book STARTED with those that immediately believed they could not draw, and hypothetically, were amazed that they could draw at the end as long as they knew some basic principles, the real question is where they can go from there. The real issue here was their motivation to draw in the first place. I was concentrating on a much more psychological issue that rose way before the course even started. Sure, you can show them that they can draw, but once you know you can draw, then what? HOW MANY ARTISTS ACTUALLY KEEP DRAWING JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN? That is what I am saying. There is always something else that pushes an artists to improve, so since this book taught you how to start, and it even admitted that it was a book for those that believed they had no chance of learning to draw so there were a LOT of confidence boosters on the way, once you get to end, what were you truly trying to achieve? Once you learned that you could draw, what is next? And that is something, once that book is done, is something you could teach yourself. I said you do not need that book. Obviously, using to the book to start off art and know there are guidelines and rules to follow to create something realistic or dynamic is great, especially if you already have a style already in tact (like she says), but that is all you learn: the rules.

You do not need this book. This book is not horrible, but you do not need it. You could learn the rules easily while you draw traditionally (not through a course with this book) with different shapes/ideas/concepts that you like, AND ONCE TRUE MOTIVATION AND MORE GOALS KICK IN (which I feel is one of the best highways to start improving, which many artists, even the new ones, are shooting for), that is when you pursue true understanding of the arts, and something like this book can only offer the baby steps (as she says), and it is not something you have to start with at all.

Art is as varietized as it is specific and somehow complicated, as it is for the way people learn, so yes, many people can learn systematically like this and buy many more books and look up many more studies and go outside and look at models (like you like to make better pictures), or others like still images that do not move (like I do, but of course, anybody who uses still images to you is "cheating" in art; I have no idea why). There are too many ways to learn, and by me testifying that you do not need this book, it affirms that statement, that I learn differently than this book, so his it possible that anyone can then say "You did not get it because you 'did the art wrong?'" In the end, you get what you take from it. It all goes down to choice, ANOTHER thing all artists have, and it has a LOT to say about the brain overall too, not just specific "specialized" sides. You could learn art many many ways than this, AND YOU DON'T NEED THIS BOOK.

Also, I BARELY thought of you as an experimental control in this critique. I told you I went through this book in middle school, remember? And I had friends and teachers who noted and used this book in high school. I had a lot of time to think about this, not just now when you introduced this book in college. It was just an "aha" moment for me, and then a "...I have the same feelings now after doing the book again at an older age" feeling.

I still love you, though.

ShizukanaNatsu [2015-01-12 13:43:58 +0000 UTC]

I personally think art books can be of help. If I suck at proportions, and decide to look at some instructions on how to improve them, I'm not losing my own art sense or forgetting about my reason to draw. I can see what you mean though. For beginners, if you give them a book on something, they'd probably end up spending a lot of time drawing similar stuff to whatever the book influenced them to do before finding their creativity.

I never looked at any art instruction books besides anime ones, and I ended up criticizing the artists for the noses. THE NOSES. HAVE YOU EVEN SEEN SOMEONE WITHOUT NOSTRILS WHOSE NOSE IS POINTY AND POINTS AT A CERTAIN DIRECTION. ALL. THE. TIME.?!?! AND THE MOUTHS! WHAT HAPPENED TO THEIR UPPER LIPS?!?! HOW DO.....WHERE DO THEY EVEN PUT MAKEUP ON?!?! WHY SHOULD THEIR NECKS BE SO SMALL?!?!

Laugh-Butts In reply to ShizukanaNatsu [2017-01-11 21:58:15 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yes! I do not announce our books and instructions in general! I JUST DESPISE THIS ONE SPECIFIC BOOK LISTED ABOVE, THAT HAS PLAGUED ME WITH ITS WORDS FOR SO LONG, AND MANY OF MY ART TEACHERS HAVE ABIDED BY IT VERY BLINDLY. SO AT LAST, WHEN MY FREAKING COLLEGE FRIEND, WHO I FEEL HAS A LOT OF TALENT, AND IS VERY DETAIL ORIENTED… ALL THE SUDDEN GIVES ME THIS BOOK? WHAT THE HECK? (Yes, she was angry I made this bad review) lol

How to draw anime books are hilarious. I actually found an artist on DeviantArt who has published some of the how to draw manga books I read/look through as a kid in the bookstores. He had drawn a lot of other how to draw certain style books, including comic art, mecha, etc., and I quickly realized he was more of a "author" who studied certain styles and decided to "how to" to them money through books, as opposed to actually specialize in them. That would explain why he so off with how he is explaining how to draw anime ahhaha (I don't think anyone WANTS TO THE DRAW GINORMOUS HAIR THAT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE PROPORTIONALLY, I DON'T THINK ANYBODY WANTS TO REALLY DRAW THOSE WEIRD NOSES THAT MAKES NO SENSE EITHER. IN THE END, PEOPLE EVENTUALLY DEFINITELY CHANGE THEIR MANGA ART INEVITABLY INTO SOMETHING SEMI REALISTIC, AND THAT'S NOT "NOT MANGA" JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE BEING SEMI PROPORTIONAL LOL)
