As a Seychelles cosplayer and role-player, I am very aware of the hate Seychelles receives. I know that there are reasons out there, but are they even reasonable? In this rant, I reveal why the common reasons of hating her barely make any sense. We are all entitled to our opinions, so she may be the most adorable thing ever, or appear to be boring and unappealing to others. Also, I'm not saying that you have to love her, or even like her! But you shouldn't really have to hate her when there are practically no reasons to do so.

The reasons (in order) in this rant are: "She gets in the way of yaoi!", "She gets in the way of my OTP!!", "She is such a bitch!", "She is a whore!", "She gets ALL the guys in Gakuen Hetalia!", "She's a Mary-Sue!", "I don't like her because of her skin color!", "She gets paired up with EVERYONE!", "She's a FEMALE!", "She's an island!", "I don't like how people portray Seychelles in their fanfictions!", "Seychelles is totally a useless, unnecessary character!", and "Although she doesn't do much in the anime, she has a big fan-base!"

-"She gets in the way of yaoi!"
No, she doesn't. I don't see how in the world she gets in the way of it. Does this mean that you hate all the other girls too, or maybe all characters? But really, nobody is getting in the way of yaoi. Did she somehow decrease the production of USUK/FrUK/GerIta etc...? What in the world are you thinking?

Fun-fact: Hetalia is not a yaoi anime.

-"She gets in the way of my OTP!!"
Are you getting that desperate in finding a reason to hate her? Oh, you hate her because she gets in the way of FrUK? So that means America 'gets in the way' of FrUK. Are you going to hate him too? Or maybe you would hate Hungary because she 'gets in the way' of AusPrus? Just learn to ignore a pairing that you don't like, and just search things of the pairing that you do like!

Fun-fact: Excluding the possibility of HREXChibitalia, the majority of pairings are not canon in Hetalia.

-"She is such a bitch!"
I never thought that she ever fit the definition of being that. I looked the word up just to make extra sure that I know what I'm saying here, unlike those who simply toss that term around like it's nothing.

Bitch- A woman considered to be spiteful or overbearing; a lewd woman; a malicious, unpleasant, selfish person.

Can you tell me when there was a time when she was ever like any of the terms? If you can't, then why do you even call her that in the first place?

-"She is a whore!"
To be a whore is to be a dissolute and/or promiscuous person. A whore is usually the one who also has sex with many people and such.

If you are calling her a whore because of Gakuen Hetalia, your judgment is definitely off. She never tried to have sex with anyone, nonetheless flirt with them! And it seemed that pretty much nobody had tried to flirt with her either, excluding France. If you think that she's a whore because she 'gets all the men', that's invalid; she never 'gets' the men. At the very most, she only socializes and tries to be nice to them, because it's a respectful thing to do. So in your world, possibly being nice to others = whore? Or, being kind = flirting?

To those who have that type of logic: In life, you probably have tried being nice and kind to others, right? If so, call yourself a whore, too. If not, call yourself a hypocrite. If you do not wish to be either of those terms, there is hope. Please refer to this possibility: Do not label Seychelles as a whore.

-"She gets ALL the guys in Gakuen Hetalia!"
Please refer back to the previous rant about titled "She is a whore!". Is it because Seychelles is the one communicating with the characters and not you? Okay, maybe you should just consider yourself jealous- yes, be jealous of a sweet girl.

Come on, must you really be jealous of a character who does not even exist, nonetheless be jealous of her because she talks to characters who also do not exist? Besides, in Gakuen Hetalia, it's actually you being put in the perspective of Seychelles, but you get to make the choices of what she does or not. So in a way, you're still being yourself in the game in a way.

By the way, some people say that Gakuen Hetalia is a 'dating sim'. Okay, maybe it does have the title of it, or something? But it seems to be the type of game that is like, "Let's make friends and make it through school!" type of game, nothing major. At most, you just have daily conversations with the characters and stuff- similar to what you would do in real life.

-"She's a Mary-Sue!"
How would you even know if she is? "She's so perfect!" No, she does have faults and flaws, which you probably did not care to look up. She's a bit of a glutton; she laments about her high cost of living; she does get teased because of her coat of arms, and possibly bullied for other reasons in Gakuen Hetalia; she is not good at cooking, but slightly better than England; she is also insecure about herself at times. And some people say that she's a Mary-Sue because she 'gets all the guys'. Refer back to my two rants of "She is a whore" and/or "She gets all the guys in Gakuen Hetalia!".

There are several different types of Mary-Sues, but I'll give the general definitions.
Mary-Sue: A fictional character, usually female and especially in fan-fiction, whose implausible talents and likableness weaken the story; they are perfect with their fashion, looks, beauty, intelligence, strength, social skills, and/or power.
In my opinion, Seychelles is very adorable in her designs! She can be smart at times, but a bit clumsy too. And her social skills, like I said, she tries to be nice to others. If she's nice to others, it makes sense for others to be nice to her. Even then, she does get teased, so her social skills are not perfect.

-"I don't like her because of her skin color!"
Then you probably hate Spain and Turkey, yes?

In the first four seasons of Hetalia, characters like Seychelles, Spain, and Turkey were very white. That was because of Studio DEEN's previous director and staff. Since there are now a new director and staff members, the characters now have their original skin color in season 5. Besides, Himaruya did design Seychelles to have tan skin. Also, apparently it's known that Himaruya does not always stick to the same shade color for skin, so her skin color may vary from a light tan to medium tan to dark. -"She gets paired up with EVERYONE!"
Why must that matter so much to you? England, Prussia, America, France etc...and lots of other countries are paired up with several other characters/countries/humans. On the contrary, the most popular ships Seychelles is involved in are EnglandXSeychelles and FranceXSeychelles. But one of the most popular ships overall are, for example, USUK, FrUK, and EnglandXJapan. Interesting, a lot of people do love England, but I never heard anyone complain how he's paired up a lot. (And yes, I really do like England too. This is not meant to bash him by any means, but to only make a point across.)

Fact: The fandom pairs up lots of characters with each other.
If you do not like that^ fact, the frustration should not be aimed at the character; and instead, rethink if you really wish to be part of a fandom that pairs up characters often.

Fact: A lot of Hetalia characters get paired up with a lot of Hetalia characters. (What a big surprise!)
To hate Seychelles for being paired up with others...well, look at all the other characters.

-"She's a FEMALE."
Can you please provide a reason why this is a wonderful excuse to hate Seychelles? First you have to be hater, and now be a bit of a sexist? Then perhaps you hate Hungary, and Liechtenstein, and any other female characters just because they have a womanhood? I can get into deeper details on why this is wrong on so many levels, but I rather not.
Ironically, the majority of the Hetalia fandom are females! "Is a female; hates female characters."

-"She's an island!"
What kind of reason is that? Contrary to belief, Seychelles is not an island, but an archipelago(basically a chain of islands. Still, get your facts straight). Why aim your frustrations at a character just because he/she represents an island or archipelago country?
Okay, well I never heard of any reasons to hate Japan, Taiwan, England, Iceland etc... just because they are island countries.

-"I don't like how people portray Seychelles in their fanfictions!"
Firstly, Seychelles' personality is basically: bubbly, cheerful, a good heart, sweet, and nice. I suggest learning more about Seychelles's history and personality before using this reason to hate her.

If you understand Seychelles' history and personality, and you still hate her for how she is portrayed, could it be because she appears OOC(out of character)? If so, remember that it's the Author's doing; if you know for a fact that the real Seychelles would not act like that, perhaps you should try finding better fanfictions that portray her better and ignore the bad fanfictions?

-"Seychelles is totally a useless, unnecessary character!"
Just because a character is a minor character, that doesn't mean that the character is useless or unnecessary. Hetalia is basically a world of personified countries, and even micronations! Sure, Seychelles was neither in Axis nor Allies, but she is still a country. Because she is a country with history with some of the other characters, such as being raised by France etc... she does have at least some importance. She may not have as much appearances compared to the main cast, but she can still be useful. Besides, there are other countries/micronations characters who are still a part of Hetalia who have even less screen-time than Seychelles, such as Australia, Principality of Wy, Romania etc..

-"Although she doesn't do much in the anime, she has a big fan-base!"
Think of it like this: Seychelles is known because she was in the Hetalia game Gakeun Hetalia, which is very popular. She gets to have a few appearances in the manga. She was known as being a popular Hetalia character who got white-washed at first. And also, she's a well-known Hetalia character to receive hate- and because of the hate, some people joined the fan-base in order to give Seychelles more positive attention. Eventually, things add up to why her fan-base may appear big-- but certainly not as big as the other characters.
Besides, there are some characters who did less than Seychelles and did not do much in the anime, yet their fan-base is bigger than Seychelles', such as Hong Kong.
