Description I wanted a Captain America outfit for the 4th of July, so I DIY'ed it. I'm seriously sad that whoever is in charge of marketing the Avengers movie hasn't tapped into the women's clothing fanbase. All the stuff I've found is for guys!

The skirt pattern is A6944 by NewLook. It's available at Walmart. I'm going to make another skirt with the same pattern that has all the Avengers on it.

I love DIY projects like this. Marketing companies always target this stuff to boys and men. Girls like video games and comics too! I always have to take apart gaming shirts and refashion them to fit me. Great job and LOVE the skirt. ^^

Good work, I could never have done that, and a good question though I think we all know why the marketing dept. of target thinks that the only only people into videogame/comicbook/star wars are 400lb male nerds. They're obviously very wrong, I'm 150lbs and drown in an XL and my wife is a much bigger marvel fan than I. If I could have done this for her I would be her superhero.
But sewing is not my fortΓ©.

We should demand Target supply smaller shirts for men and women. Just saying.

Awesome job, though!

ok worried about being taken as a perv but this is a serious question...
how do you do this so that once it's all sewn up it doesnt squeeze your chest? my first thought was that might be a cool thing to try doing for my girlfriend, but my next was she has a pretty big chest and wouldnt the flat chest of a mens shirt be extra tight on a 38C chest? how could you avoid that problem?(aside from buying her the right sized shirt...)

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LauraDoodles In reply to JasonXL [2012-07-10 22:24:46 +0000 UTC]

That's a valid question. I would say to taper the sides so that you're leaving extra room in the areas that are larger. If you're still worried, then make the front panel a little wider than the back. That way, there will be extra fabric in the front.

Take a look at one of her favorite shirts and see how it's constructed.

JasonXL In reply to LauraDoodles [2012-07-10 22:43:34 +0000 UTC]

hmm i'll keep that in mind. now to think of a design for it. i'm really starting to get into this haha

Elandria In reply to JasonXL [2012-07-10 23:40:00 +0000 UTC]

Most womens t-shirts aren't fitted and are exactly the same as mens t-shirts in shape except being smaller, just fit to her bust rather than her waist to give her the room she needs, or as Chikara-san has already mentioned, shape the side seams a little to taper in at the waist

:sigh: Even if i followed the instructions it would look like a paper shredder crapped out cloth that was hastily sewn

LauraDoodles In reply to Yummixx2 [2012-07-10 20:50:57 +0000 UTC]

Not true! My edges were really rough when I first cut the cloth. As long as you take your time and sew a straight stitch, it's easy and will look great.

Elandria In reply to LauraDoodles [2012-07-10 23:40:37 +0000 UTC]

Out of curiosity,.. did you hand stitch or machine sew the new seams?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

LauraDoodles In reply to Elandria [2012-07-11 00:07:15 +0000 UTC]

I used a sewing machine for all new stitches in this one.

That's so cool! I have a Miku Hatsune shirt that I had the same problem with, it came in "unisex" sizes, but they were out of small sizes. >_< The problem is mostly that it's really long, so I was just going to hem it... But maybe I'll try this instead!
Fandom shirts can be a real pain because the "unisex" shirts are just men's sizes... So if they don't have a small enough size, you might have to alter it. (But think of it this way... If the small sizes were sold out, it's probably the other fangirls who are buying them! )

Also, I must say...I love the Pikachu shirt you used as a guideline!
