Description Here is my coloring method! Also on Tumblr and has a bonus section on Coloring from Reference: thesilvereye.tumblr.com/post/5…

This technique can be done with any drawing program that has Layers, a Polygonal Selection tool, a Gradient tool, and a Paintbrush (and most drawing programs that I know of have those tools). I used Gimp for this.

How do you blend the colors? As I recall, you don't believe in the smudge tool..

Here is a decent tutorial . I keep one hand on the shortcut key for the eyedropper/colorpicker tool, and flip from color picker to paintbrush quickly as I paint to smooth out the colors. It gives me total control over my colors, and it leaves the drawing with nice paint stroke textures from either just the round brush or a textured grunge brush.

That is probably the very best ultra-basic 'here's how to color if you've never done it before' tutorial I have ever seen. Wow.

My brain... x-x

This is overwhelming to me since I am a very new artist to this kinda stuff xD

But this seems really helpful. I will try to break it down and stuff so I can learn how to do the skin and clothing right... Right now my shading is horrible and I can't even do lighting ;3; Good job though. I will be trying this out :3

Cool. Thanks for the resource! Not entirely sure how to get it to work in photoshop but hopefully I will figure it out

Photoshop has all the same tools (though some have different names), so it should work there.

I want to use this tutorial really badly but I get super confused...

LauraHollingsworth In reply to SophieSuffocate [2013-09-18 13:25:24 +0000 UTC]

Which parts are confusing? I'd be happy to try and help out.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SophieSuffocate In reply to LauraHollingsworth [2013-09-19 10:05:46 +0000 UTC]

I don't know... I'm using Photoshop CS3 and I want to do the part with the lines and using the overlay style with them so they blend more with the background... but I'm having issues with the color under it making it look like shit. D; It just ends up looking super messy and you can see where the color ends under the lines.

I guess I just rely on my lines too much. Plus I can't seem to get the same effect with polygonal selection tool... I tried 3 different ways and it was just not clean like in your example. Ugh.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LauraHollingsworth In reply to SophieSuffocate [2013-09-19 18:45:33 +0000 UTC]

Not sure if it would help, but the example image is 3500x2300 pixels big. The full size is pretty messy, but then when it scales down, most of the messiness gets hidden. It might help with the colors under the lines problem too, like this drawing: fav.me/d6iqjdg zoomed out it looks a lot cleaner and less noticeable than zoomed in. Sorry if this doesn't help.

SophieSuffocate In reply to LauraHollingsworth [2013-09-19 21:28:02 +0000 UTC]

Ooooh I see what your saying.

O wow, I feel like a dunce. That actually helped me understand what was going on in the other image, cause I couldn't zoom in to look. Thanks! <3

I'm a visual person, and small stuff like this can stump me. xD
