Description
Sai iz da shizznit : PDedicated to *New-chaossapphire who requested this of me.
I didn't go into details about the coloring METHODS... just the process involved. As it is, this took a crapload of time to prepare for you guys. I have an unusual way of working. I figured maybe some of you may benefit from it.

Okay, so I just tried this and realized I'd have to adjust the transparency of the grey layer. But the grey layer makes the colors beneath it dull..
I dunno..am I doing it wrong?

This is an old process I used to do, but I do think that you were doing it right. I seem to remember this best working when I would duplicate the light layer and merge it with the gray layer, then multiply it. The colors will be dulled under the gray layer, but normal where the areas were white. Then you go in and color tint that gray layer to change the ambient light color influence of the shot. From there, you can go in and paint it getting lighter and/or darker by tweaking it. It basically acted as a first major step toward coloring with an airbrushed end piece. There's really a million and one ways to do something in Photoshop, and to be perfectly honest, my coloring approach changes per picture. I haven't used this exact method in a while. In the few years since this, I've modified my coloring process a bit, but I can at least say that I do believe you were on the right track, even though the gray dulled your colors.

I tried doing this, and when I did the skin, it was more grey looking then anything else. Also, everything was much darker then expected. I used both this tutorial and the one you linked...

I realize that there are a few steps that I didn't include in there.... I guess it's not really meant to be a direct tutorial of how to do it, but rather a method tutorial, to show the concept. I would have to see the Photoshop file you have to figure out where the issue is that you're having.
My guess is that I didn't really tell that there's actually a solid fill of his shape behind him to separate him from the background. I also use a lot of multiply techniques to play with colors. A way to make the skin less gray is to put a solid color behind him, even white, to separate him from the background color.... It's a little hard to explain and I don't really know what you did... But maybe it's time I do put a real tutorial up at some point.
Thanks for trying this out though : ) I'm glad someone out there has been curious about my process. if you want a real 1 on 1, I'd be glad to teach you more about it personally.

I actually found this tutorial by typing in "Sai Coloring Tutorials" in the search bar and this tutorial was on maybe the third or forth row. I really like the idea of it and it seems like doing this would be alot easier then trying to find the correct color for each base to shade or highlight.
Anyway, I have photoshop but I choice to use Sai instead because I like the process of it more. I would really like to learn how to do this though and a detauked Tutorial would be lovely if you ever have the time!
Thank's again, and yes I wouldn't mind doing a 1 on 1 at all. I have a skype if you'd like to chat there sometime. I'll be sure to watch your dA. ((:

This is honestly the best tutorial I've seen. Mostly because you showed the underlying process with the lines, as well as emphasizing lightsource, which is a very important part. Excellent work!
