Description The day I went from Ana Tim to Ana Fulgenzio

It was the year 1966, I was young, in my mid 20s. The sweet smell of spring flowers filled the air. My town was peaceful, nothing exciting ever happened. I was working at Gino’s Burgers, making most of my living off the tips I made. Men flowed in and out of the restaurant but none to my liking. They were dull and never had that spark that I searched for in a man.
“Hey Ana,” my boss called, “the next customer will be your last for the day”
“Got it!”
I waited in the back until I heard the eerie chime that signaled a customer. I put my cheesy smile on and walked to the front door. The man standing there made my heart skip a beat. He was a tall Italian man with slick black hair, just around my age. He wasn’t from this town and he interested me…
“C-come with me,” I stuttered, “I’m Ana and I’ll be your waitress today.”
I brought him to his table in the far corner of the restaurant. His eyes glued on me and mine on him.
“You’re not from around here are you?” I finally asked once he was seated.
“No,” he said with a heavy Italian accent.
“What’s your name?” I asked trying to probe for information.
“Mario, Mario Fulgenzio.”
“Mario huh,” I placed the menu on his table. “So what are you doing here in this small town?”
“I plan on living here Mrs.Ana.”
“It’s Ms.Ana.” I corrected quickly.
“Ms.Ana? Whats a pretty woman like yourself not doing married?” He asked ever so intrigued.
“Well I’ve never really found a man of my interest Mr.Mario.”
“Just Mario is fine, I’m not married either.” He grinned and an explosion of delight happened inside of me.
“R-really?” Then I felt the death glares of my boss at the back of my head. I had completely forgotten that I was working. “What would you like to order Mario?”
“I would just like an espresso…”
“Ok.” I smiled and hurried to the back. My fingers stumbled around trying to find the coffee. A hyperactive co-worker of mine, Sara, buzzed over my shoulder.
“Sooooo?” She asked in a curious tone.
I turned on the espresso maker and respond as if I didn’t know what she was talking about. “So what?”
“You know exactly what! Who’s the cutie?!” We both peered out the back door to sneak a peek at him.
“No one…” I said trying to focus back on his espresso.
“Psh, well he is totally into you!” She nudged me in the side.
“I have to go, he’s waiting for his espresso!” I grabbed his little espresso and rushed out the door.
“Here you go Mario.” I handed him the espresso slowly wanting to prolong the time with him. I got halfway to the back door when he asked.
“Hey, uh what time do you get off work?” My body snapped around to face him.
“Right now actually!” I said with too much enthusiasm for a normal person.
“Would you like me to walk you home?”
“I’d like that very much.” I grinned from ear to ear.
At the same time every day after that, Mario would come to Gino’s Burgers order his espresso and walk me home after work. Slowly our relationship progressed. He began taking me to work and out for dinner at expensive Italian restaurants. Till one day when instead of ordering his espresso he asked me to marry him. That’s how I went from Ana Tim to Ana Fulgenzio.
