Description
I penciled a few pages to send off to Marvel back at the end of 2006, but never finished. This was my favorite panel from the submission, so I decided that instead of losing it forever to the pile of old used pages, I would scan and color it.For those of you who don't know, this is Rogue from the X-Men, battling the futuristic mutant-hunting sentinel Nimrod. She has apparently kicked it's ass.
I've never seen Rogue with that hairstyle, but she's a girl, so I'm sure she does more than just have the same hair for a decade at a time.
Hope you enjoy.

Agreed, I really do think she's a victim of bad writing though, it's as if the writers who are hired to tell stories about her are so threatened by a strong woman that they can't resist giving her unworthy opponents, power-limitations, and the occasional melodrama-moments. Rogue is one of the most potentially GODDESS-LIKE characters in the whole MARVEL universe. why not play on that?

yeah, why not? like you said she's one of the most potentially Goddess-Like characters and some versions she's a reeeeeeaaaaaally nice person, but she does have the tendancy to do the odd thing that makes you wounder "why did she do that?" (which is one of the reasons why she's one of my fav characters) but other than that she's a favoured charecter in my house (particularly by me). GO TEAM ROGUE!!!!

well im not entirely sure about that cuz in the xtreme comics she loses her powers and goes off with gambit doing all sorts and she still remembers the fighting skills she learnt at the x-mansion. but other then in those comics without her powers shes useless, which sucks when shes such a cool character. (damn writers)

Yeah, that's what I was going for, but a few people said she would have a lot of trouble dealing with Nimrod, and wouldn't look so casual...
But hey, who's the artist here? Right? I made it real by drawing it. Go Rogue!

I think Joe Mad gave her a hairstyle similar to that on his run with X-Men. Honestly it suits her more than most of the styles I have seen. Don't know about her takin' out Nimrod by herself though. I read a What If? When I was little where she absorbed Thor's power instead of Ms. Marvel. If she did something like that she would hand Nimrod's ass to him.
I agree with what you and Art-of-ZugZug were saying about the movies. Your on to something with having her absorbed the powers of another mutant. Hell make Carol Danvers the mutant she absorbs it from under Magneto's insistance. One of the things that makes Rouge so cool is the fact that she is invulnerable physically but mentally she is morevulnerable than any of the other X-Men.

LazarusReturns In reply to turbosuo [2008-07-06 15:14:56 +0000 UTC]
Yeah. She needs to be in a fight with someone like Carol Danvers. Maybe she absorbs her powers in self defense, then punches her through a wall and kills her (not knowing her new strength), thus retaining her powers, then feels bad about it for the rest of her life. Without that conflict, a lot of the fun of Rogue is gone. Plus, in the comics she does have a darker side at times, which the one in the movie doesn't.
As for kicking Nimrod's butt, we don't know who she absorbed prior to the fight...

The subjects of the piece are executed wonderfully and I love Rogue in this hair style. The background is a little...lacking, but that's the most major improvement I could suggest.

Yeah, I didn't want the background to distract from the main image. And I was getting tired near the end, so yeah, the background is pretty simple.

No kidding. She's way too weak in the movies. And frail. I would have liked to have seen her as one of the Brotherhood, who the X-Men fought, then rescued, like in the comics. That way, she had a lot of bad stuff to try to fix, and she could have been invulnerable from killing some mutant who's powers she took, like she did with Ms. Marvel in the comics.

Art-of-ZugZug In reply to LazarusReturns [2008-06-09 05:57:20 +0000 UTC]
EXACTLY! That way, she could have been a cooler, more important and in-depth character. And it certainly would have been an improvement over X3's linear narrative.
I swear, though, they have idiots writing in Hollywood. -_-" Then again, seeing some of this summer's line up, that's not difficult to deduce.

X3 made me so mad, in so many ways, so many times over. The one scene I like is when Magneto and Prof X first go to see Jean and she lifts all the cars. They so could have made Phoenix coming out of the water so much cooler and dramatic. I had a really, really hard time finishing that movie.

You and me both! They killed off THREE main characters in ONE movie. Hell, Cyclops more or less just 'disappears' and next thing you know, 20 minutes later, he's dead all of a sudden. WTF?!
They definitely did not do any justice to many of the characters - especially Beast. He's a very conflicted individual and they barely touched upon that... They really dropped the ball with X3. I'm not even up for watching the Wolverine and Magneto spin offs...

I think it really depends on who the directors are. I was happy with the two movies that just came out (Iron Man and Hulk) and am looking forward to seeing how they do the new movies now that they don't have to answer to other companies who always have to meddle with movies to make them "more appealing to a larger audience" (which usually means "make them crappy").

So, now that The Dark Knight is out, what's your verdict? I thought it was the best super hero movie I've seen, right along side Spider Man 2. Nolan is great at capturing Batman's dark side and Heath Ledger turned the Joker from a lame to a believable psycho.
The plot was also refreshing. Too many of these superhero movies follow the generic plot: 1) hero gets powers 2) villain copies hero's powers (Hulk, Iron Man, Spiderman 3...) 3) villains are too strong for hero 4) hero must use environment against villain to win. *yawn*

Sorry, haven't had internet access for well over a month... a bit behind.
I liked the movie, but was wondering how the Joker managed to get enough explosives into that hospital without anyone noticing. That's not easy to do, especially on short notice. I thought Two-Face looked really cool and creepy, and yes, I liked how Ledger portrayed the Joker. Never liked the character in the comics or movies before that.
Overall, I liked the movie. Glad comics are getting the treatment they deserve in the theaters.

Two-Face seemed a bit supernatural to me, and as for the Joker, I think the filmmakers were trying to use the metaphor that since the Joker is SO unpredictable that he can do things the laws of physics would otherwise say he CAN'T do.

haha You know what? I was wondering the same thing! ^_^
I can't help but laugh a little considering that Marvel thought they had the upperhand on the comics-to-movies market - after all, Superman didn't go over so well, especially considering he's one of DC's flagship characters. I think I'll be watching the Oscars this time around. Heath did a fantastic job with the Joker - I just wonder how his passing will affect the future movies...

LazarusReturns In reply to Art-of-ZugZug [2008-09-24 02:21:56 +0000 UTC]
They probably won't have to answer that for the next two movies or so - there are enough bad guys out there that they can throw at Batman. They could MENTION the Joker and not show him, but eventually they'll have to figure something out.
As for Marvel vs DC movies, I just want to see entertaining movies that stick to the comics, and I was pleased with what I saw this summer. None of that X3 BS that almost made me up-chuck in my popcorn.

Ugh, please! Don't remind me of X3! -_-" It should have been called Disaster Movie!
Good news about the future Nolan Batman films - he's sworn never to include Robin! Sure, Robin has been around for a good 70 years in the comics and not including him would violate the Batman canon... but I always felt Robin was a token character included only to attract a young readership. Much the same way DC and Marvel conjured up ridiculous plots to create female alter-egos of their flagship characters to increase female readership... -_-"

I kind of like the current Robin in the comics. (Never thought I'd say that). He's tactically smart, can take care of himself, and isn't a "shucks-golly" tool like the original was in his youth, and he's not a punk-ass like the one in the movies. The predominant black and red of his costume looks a lot better than the yellow and green, the scaly underwear and bare legs, and robin hood elf shoes. He's like a brooding Bruce Wayne in the body of a teenager. If it was handled that way, where he's like a younger Batman, it could be cool, they could explore how Bruce Wayne would see someone with his personality, in someone much younger than him, but Hollywood thinks teens won't relate to a character who's not rebellious and unbelievably annoying in a cocky "what the heck do you know, Batman!" way.
Not that I want Robin in the movies, necessarily. I'm fine without him, but I think it could be handled well if they didn't mess him up to appeal to a demographic that doesn't make sense, and pissing off the fans in the process.

haha I love your description of Robin there.
You make good observations about Hollywood and teenagers, and like you, that's where I have my concerns. I recently watched Transformers again and I couldn't help but notice how that movie was tailored for a teenage audience (-the first time watching I was simply mesmerized by the robots!), which is bizarre, particularly because if you grew up with Transformers, you're well beyond your teens! Not that I think that the movie was bad (I give it a solid B), but there are definitely things I would change about the human protagonists if I could. Dammit, does it always have to be about drawing in the greatest viewership in Hollywood?!
...
I think I just answered my own question there!

I think they went overboard with the robot designs. And except for Prime and Bumblebee, they all seemed to be either black or silver, so there were times when they were fighting, and I had no idea who I was looking at. The girl was really cute, though.

haha Yeah, I know what you mean. The action sequences were at times confusing. Even after watching the movie for a third time, I still have a hard time identifying the characters during battle. Then again, I'd much prefer that then them having faithfully reproduced the original character models. I can't get over the retro feel of those! -_-"

LazarusReturns In reply to Art-of-ZugZug [2008-10-24 14:03:13 +0000 UTC]
True, making exact models would have been wonky, but I would have liked to have seen them keep the general feel of the characters. Prime was fine, but nobody else even remotely resembled anything like their toys. They departed too much from the original designs. Modernizing the look would have been great, but all those wires and parts and distracting elements made it too confusing, imho.

Well, that's not cool. How can they make that cool? I guess the new Robin in the comics is ok, because he's a smart kid and thinks and uses strategy, instead of trying to "act like a punk kid" or like some sort of rebel problem child that always says smart-ass things because studio execs think that's what the viewers will identify with.
Sigh.

I think it would depend on how in control of her powers she was. In the past, she absorbed the powers of a number of X-Men and laid a pretty good likkin' down on him. And her powers have been in kind of a flux lately.
It would be a good fight. Nimrod is pretty tough.
