Description

The 12th refit of the venerable Hadrada-class Transports. One of the first ship designs to not include atmospheric flight capabilities, the design proved it's worth during the late 2000s, mostly in response to the increasing number of space stations, such as the AAMDP series orbital mass drivers, after terraforming proved inefficient.

Mostly bulk cargo haulers, the Hadrada-class was never intended for military or policing use, but the simplistic design meant it was more cost-efficient. With 15 built, the Hadrada's were common sights around the inner system, being integral to the construction of most of the first space stations, and most all colonies beyond the Asteroid Belt.

Over the 100 years of service, the Hadrada earned it's reliable reputation, and it was refitted 12 times to keep up with the newer ships. The 10th refit, however, was more to the detriment to this reputation, as a conflict in the Operating System installed to manage the sub-light drives caused several accidents, and led to several of the aging vessels to be retired.

The next two refits solved the issue, but the sub-light drive remained an unpopular inclusion, and it was replaced with four Pulsar Drive Engines instead.

The end of the Hadrada's service came in 2187, during the VIC movement. When open revolt overthrew the UES government of Venus, hostilities seemed imminent. Under a truce, the remaining 6 Hadrada's were sent to Venus to peacefully carry refugees away from what could have turned into a war zone.

With the approval of the VIC leaders, the 6 ships docked with Venus-2 Station, but at some point gunfire broke out. Tensions snapped and the 6 transports were subjected to heavy fire. With most of the ships destroyed, the 2 remaining ships, Succor and Zaragosa, tried to use their refitted sub-light drives to escape, but tragedy struck once more, and neither ship would ever reach safety, as the troublesome sub-light drives malfunctioned once again, causing the destruction of both ships.

After the VIC crumbled, the UES made a concerted effort to overhaul the sub-light drive systems in use on other vessels, but the stigma was too much, and the entire series was discontinued.

Seen by many as a sad end to the historic class, the Hadrada's would be fondly remembered by people for many more years as one of the ships that allowed man to build stations across space. After the events of the Corrector War, the design may have fallen to obscurity, if not for a memorial mural in the Main hanger of Avalon Garden, where the class eventually received almost mythical status.
