Description
This is an unusual piece for me. My goal was to 1) find within me an artistic style that couldn't be construed as anime/manga 2) capture the simplicity and illustrative qualities of a fashion magazine illustration. The result is interesting. I utilized gradients, textures, and screen tone to add visual interest without excessive shading. Keeping the detail low was an extreme challenge for me, because it asked me to approach the picture in a completely opposite way than I normally would.Bearing in mind what I set out to accomplish, I would be very much interested in hearing your thoughts on the end result.
As for the theme of the illustration itself, the idea was that a girl finds a new mole on her body and panics. She turns to the family medical books, and works herself up into a panic, reading about skin diseases and jumping to conclusions. I know I do that whenever I have a weird or unusual pain. ;O
Inked with microns, colored in Photoshop.

Very cute style! I love it. I also have tried to find myself a non-anime style, but with little success.

Heh. I actually have a mole in that spot. (Only on the opposite shoulder)
Well, it's actually a piece of scar tissue apparently, but it kind of looks like a mole.

mmm an interesting result. Very very different from anything I've seen from you, since I can only recall a manga influence with your art most of the time. Given that, I seem to recall illustrations of children's picture books in your stylings here.
I just think that the table could have used a little more detail as it conflicts a lot with the character.

Oh wow I love it! I've been long searching for a style that can't be signified as "manga" but its hard when one has been drawing the same way for years. I love the concept! Self diagnosis is the worst--its horrible taking pyschology or medical courses and thinking you have everything you learn about ;

Huh, that's pretty cool. Not you're usual style, kinda nifty, even a bit refreshing...that and you rarely post artwork anyway Great bit! Wouldn't mind seeing more like this.

I always support people trying to do new things every once in a while...I think it's important.
No one really agrees with me, usually...but...you know....that's kinda normal for me.
I think you've done a good job with this. It's still YOU without being "anime".

That's a great idea with the concept. I think that you've gotten pretty close to your goal. Though I think that some may still construe it to be "anime" mainly in the eyes and some of the strands of hair but then they would really be nitpicking. But sadly that happens so much as I've run into myself.

I think it's good that you're moving away a little bit from anime for something a little more distinct, and this still pretty nice! <3 the coloring is great as always, and I do like the facial expression :3. I definitely like it ^_^

is the mirror supposed to be symbolic? Because it appears that even tho she's looking away from it...in the mirror u can still see her like she's looking towards it..

the mirror is exactly the opposite of the girl. The girl is not facing the mirror, so thus she wouldn't appear to be facing the mirror. Everything reflected in the image is how it would appear from the other side of her face. Mirrors take things and flip them, not repeat things as they appear in real life.
Perhaps i suggest to you to look in a mirror and see how it reflects your actions, and think about rights and lefts being reversed, etc. It gives the brain a good work out. It's also niffty to use a mirror in self portraits.
