Description
What will become of poor Thomas now that he has been turned into a girl? What started out as an experiment is now a comic of 60 pages and growing.Index: otherunicorn.deviantart.com/jo…
page 2: otherunicorn.deviantart.com/ar…
The comic gallery: otherunicorn.deviantart.com/ga…
original coment:
Just an idea I had. There is enough of a seed idea that it might make page two, but it all depends on my mood, and me having further ideas. beyond two pages? beats me.
Basically it's me attempting to do a shojo manga page. Feel free to comment.

Did you know this is your most-viewed artwork, at nearly a dozen views a day?
And otherunicorn.deviantart.com/ar… is most-downloaded, at over 9 times a day.

It's too bad people don't read the rest of the comic!
The pony file is linked off-site, which is the reason it has so many downloads when it only has 1/7 of that number of views.

Try the forums on the DAZ site! [link] I can't know all the answers to your problems because of the way my Daz is set up - I have it set up like version 1, so things are not in the same places!

your comic strips are interesting, but what i would like to see are facial expressions, and maybe lighting + shadows... it would be a good way to step up your game

Curious question - where did you find the crutches/walkers in her hands at the side-view of the panel?

Aww.. thank you so much! I've done a bit of render work with amputees/etc myself, and I've never been quite able to find what I needed.
I've scanned through a lot of your gallery, by the way. I like your style. The comics definitely have a comic-book 'feel' to them. Started reading... ^_^ Keep it up!

Toon shaders are too crude for my liking - they are more anime than manga in effect. I've also tried various other shaders for pen type effects, and while the result can be interesting, it wasn't what I want here. The manga "effect" I'm going for here is the story itself - an attempt at a shoujo type story instead of the usual shonen type stuff I write/render.

When I try something out, I can end up doing hundreds of renders, just tweaking things to get what I want, or to see what each dial does. I've not seen anything that produces the effect of what you link to "easilly" in the program I use (DAZ Studio). Another thing is I don't consider the textures that come with these models to be at all realistic. No matter how you do it, these 3D things always look artificial. As such, I've decided to "go with the flow" because I like the result. Mind you, I do a lot of tweaking to the textures too.
I also found that with 3D, you have to make some compromises. My Lee character doesn't have some of the features of my originally drawn Lee - her hairstyle for example. I simply couldn['t find a hair like that. I probably bought 7 or 8 different hair types before I found one that would do a good enough job. Anne was easier, I found a suitable hair on my second attempt!
With Take Two, I designed the characters using what I had in 3D, so it wasn't a problem.

A very nice idea... couldn't you do the same with an amputee girl ?

otherunicorn In reply to mautheil [2008-02-15 10:53:32 +0000 UTC]
In this case, her being an amputee would be counter to the story, however there several disabled girls in this story. They simply haven't been introduced yet.

You refer to scars. I have yet to actually see any, unless they're so tiny that they look like flawless skin... Awesome concept.

They are mostly on one side of her body and up and down the length of her limbs. The are subtle though, and will only be visible in closeups, with the exception of the all too obvious skin-grafts, which you probably didn't even realise were there due to just how obvious they were (i.e. mistaking them for something else).

I saw the one on her right thigh, and assumed that's what it was even though it was completely square. I know that rough edges are kind of hard to do without completely redoing the whole texture. Nicely done. I really helps when you read them in order

The girl I knew with a real life graft, had a neat little rectangle. No soft edges, no funny shapes.

Poor Lee though - she's been left bleeding in Anne's arms, but at least it is at a "season's break" point.

otherunicorn In reply to R-cadia [2008-04-03 23:07:39 +0000 UTC]
No, I certainly didn't. Originally it was only an experiment, and if I really stretched my imagination, I thought I might make 5 pages. The current pause is only because I have to build a new set for the next scene, and that's mostly done. I need to download some bushes to complete it.
