Description Zeus the rat

I took this at the pet adoption center where I volunteer.

Dogs and cats aren't the only animals that get abandoned, abused or dumped in shelters. There are plenty of homeless rodents, birds, reptiles, and exotics in shelters and foster homes! So next time you're looking to get a pet of any type, save a life and choose rescue! If you live in the US or Canada, available pets in your area can be found by searching Petfinder.com

And rats make far better pets than hamsters! They are very clean animals, very smart, and rarely bite.

I'm a rodent lover, so I love both rats and hamsters, but they are very different pets! Rats are very smart! They can learn their names and you can even teach them to do tricks! But rats are very social animals and will interact with their owners a lot! Hamsters aren't very social at all and aren't big on the interacting.

I have been bitten quite a few times by both rats and hamsters, and while hamsters are more likely to bite than rats, rats do more damage when they bite!

True, rats do have some serious teeth! However, I've had both, and my hamsters bit all the time. The rats did not, and they loved to ride around on my shoulders. Together, mind you - I'd put on on each shoulder and within a minute, Ben & Socrates would be cuddled together on one shoulder.
