Description Well I am sorry if I placed this in the wrong category but my main point is to make you all clear of several things.

My question to you is this: Is my style the SAME (not similar or kinda) as what we called "spirit style?"

I don't think so. So people can start pointing fingers at my gallery and my characters and my way of drawing. It's very rude and disrespectful when ignorant-close minded people won't even take a minute to figure out what they want to say first, examine the case and then judge. Not only am I targeting this for my own gallery, but for each and one of you, Equine artists, who do have a unique style. I found many of them that have nothing to do with the Spirit style and yet we find people coming to your gallery and say, "You Spirit stealer! You thief! You're going to be reported with Dreamworks!" First of all Dreamworks can care less for they KNOW they'll have millions of fans, their work is copyrighted so there is no big deal if a 10 year old is using the same style. After all, those beginners use the same style for a few time while they try to learn how to draw and THEN develop their own style.
That's how I did it. I drew in Spirit style for a couple or 3 years. Then I started developing my own style.

Now, back to where I started. Does Lib look just like Rain?
Answer that question yourself.

WATCHERS & FRIENDS: Don't take it personal, this is mostly targeted at those people in Youtube. You have no idea how many idiots live there. And if you've been bugged by the same thing, hell, proof to those people that you're also able to develop your own style.
... unless of course...you're one of those people copying/stealing from other Equine artist's style; they don't deserve this. They've worked too damn hard on their artwork so that a fool comes to rip off their gallery.
If there is a thing I hardly can forgive--is not that people steal my art, or copy my characters about 90%--but steal my style. It is NOT fair.
There is a difference between been inspired, and "lemme copy ur art cuz i like it."
Nu uh.

No, no, Spirit style is what you see in the movie. My horses have nothing to do with it. If you'd take a look at all the comments from other people, you'll know what I am talking about. I am not going to repeat it again.

dont listen to what ppl say when they say something bad, even if it did look like spirit style, so what, i learned to draw horse by the movie, arrest me for that!! by the way, dreamworks wanted us to learn to draw spirit, if u look at the "how to draw spirit" thing on the dvd.

NO WAY!! can i list some differences?

Rain has fatter ears than Lib, and way different eyes! Don't forget, that Rain has a longer face! And, Rain's mane is more of a real horse, Lib's is more fantasy like, and beautiful!

I think the only resemblence is the eyebrows!

Leadmare In reply to HorsePop [2008-10-29 00:50:53 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! You're the first one to mention the differences

However, I don't agree with the eyebrows. Just because a drawing of a horse w/ eyebrows doesn't mean is automatically "Spirit style." If so, then the horses from Horseland, and the horse from Disney's mulan and/or Beauty & the Beast are in Spirit style?

Disney drew horses with eyebrows? I didn't notice!

you cannot be serious!? gosh, your art is compleatly yours, are these people partially blind!?
you have one of the most unique styles on here hun! its dissapointing that people cant just come to appreciate our art, but rather spend their time flaming it...
you know whats pathetic though, cartoon horses had the same type of look wayyy before spirit came to life! now it seems that every horse with eyebrows is stealing from dreamworks! yes, alot of people where inspired by it, but jeez thats besides the point.
you have moved on since then, your style is beautiful hun and lib look like rain? no!

Wow...people making accusations that you're style is Spirit style? Geez, I've NEVER thought that! Your style is unique and special to you...not Spirit style...sheesh. I think that there are just too many young children (i.e. ignorant young children) who are allowed too much time on the internet and to make themselves feel better they feel the need to bash other people, especially if they are popular or well-known. It's just kind of rediculious...

don't take their crap personally. Your style is so unique!

I dont accuse anyone, but yes, i think that they're very alike. Sure, you've developeda couple own details, but in the end i think its almost the same. But also i think you've picked the wrong charachter to compare with. Rain and Spirits faces does not look the same. I think you're an awesome artist who uses the " Spirit style " in such a creative way that none has done before.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leadmare In reply to Przewalski [2008-10-29 00:45:55 +0000 UTC]

How are they "very alike?" because my horses have eyebrows? Think about it twice because if you have that same mentality of saying, "oh, I'm seeing a random horse with eyebrows, it means they copied Spirit!"
You are very wrong. Otherwise you're also telling me that the horses from Horseland, or the horse from Disney's Mulan and/or Beauty and the Beast are the same as Spirit style? That doesn't make sense.
I do know, though, that I have to change the ears and nostrils because they are the same as the way James Baxter drew them. Other than that, I have my own style.

As for "picking the wrong characters" is also misunderstood. I used it to compare Libertad & Rain only. I just didn't wanted to cut Sol from the pic, that's all.

Przewalski In reply to Leadmare [2008-11-14 00:21:53 +0000 UTC]

I looked at the lines, and i cant develop my arguments more than i already have. Its not the eyebrows, its just the parts you focus on. The lines. And i dont think you need to change something, its similar to Spirit, not the same.

bardicsidhe In reply to ??? [2008-10-28 15:05:05 +0000 UTC]

Aw, man. When I first commented on your gallery, I wanted to say that it looked like you had echoes of Spirit-style equines in your work, but you'd taken the style and changed it and made it your own. I was afraid to say so, because I didn't want you to think I was implying you'd copied - because I don't at all.

I think that Spirit probably inspired a lot of us because it gave us an excellent base for drawing expressive equine faces - I learned from that movie too!

I don't have any problem with people who use other folks' styles as a teaching tool - intentionally or uninentionally - to develop their own particular style, simply because as artists we learn through visual stimulus. You didn't copy, you didn't trace. I certainly don't think you're guilty of anything wrong, and I wish the art community would relax a bit.

Youtube is full of people who use the anonymity of the intarwebz as an excuse to be total dickwads, guilt-free. They aren't worth your time, and certainly not worth the effort and heartache of defending your style to them.

Leadmare In reply to bardicsidhe [2008-10-29 00:41:24 +0000 UTC]

Thank you I too agree with you that we were inspired and that's how we develop our drawing skills. I don't...mind either when people uses styles such as Disney's or Dreamworks or any other big copyrighted companies. But I do not tolerate when a person literally steals an artist's style PLUS they claim it as their own. *raises hand* because that's what is happening with me and it frustrates me because I am not Disney or Dreamworks. I want my works to be respected as much as I've tried to respect others.
To tell you the truth, I haven't judged ANYONE if that person's drawings look like Spirit, Balto, or Lion King... but there IS a difference when stealing the style from another young artist.
But either way, it should be a temporarily thing to do and then move on into creating a unique style.

one thing i've noticed in horse fandoms...its an open invitation for anon and trolls and haters to just bash the hell out of you guys and force this whole "You copy Spirit, the only reason you draw horses is because of Spirit, yatta yatta on and on...."

i've followed you and pooky throughout the ordeal and you two seem to handle yourselves very well (alot better than antiqua, that one girl who had an ED page and just went apeshit with the lolz and drama)

do I see a resemblance in the above image? Uh, no, and i dont see why anyone would. if someones bugging you about that the first thing that comes to mind is someone thats trying to just get you to break down (it happens on the internet alot) especially with horse, lion, and lupin characters since there were three movies (Balto, Lion King and Spirit).

dont let it fester...ED is a result of what happens when you let something bug you like this. in my opinion you have your own style and it looks nothing like Rain. so do what you've been doing and dont let internet drama stop you

well...to tell you the truth I looked back on your early drawings and they were in spirit-style but now they are not. You have now your own style and it has just a few things in common with spirit like the eyebrows. Your style is unique

And all those who can't make the difference, would be better to look twice or even more before commenting.

Keep it up Leadmare

Leadmare In reply to odd-cloud [2008-10-29 00:33:34 +0000 UTC]

Yep, and I won't ignore it because is true. In fact, I still gotta change the way I draw ears and nostrils. But I don't agree with the eyebrows. The eyebrows were not created by Dreamworks, and therefore people don't have the right to judge others just because their horse is cartoony with eyebrows. Like ~pookyns-5 said, Spirit was so famous that people who really don't understand this issue and sees a drawing with a horse with eyebrows, they automatically go, "Oh, Spirit-style."
