Description
Bear with me, friends, this piece is a monster, accompanied with a large hunk of writing. Am I proud? Yes. Am I going to waste time with a sappy artist's note. Not anymore. A huge thanks to Alphabaetafish and Frenkle for allowing me to hijack your esk. Please please please comment, it really makes my day seeing what you think of my art <3
Sorry X.

Minh made her way through the crystalline waters of the ocean, not paying much attention to the shapes she passed, not even sparing a glimpse. They were unimportant, anyways. The only thing that currently mattered was the mission Makoa had bestowed upon her; the problem was that she had no idea how to complete such a ridiculous quest. Gracefully, she swirled through the water in a series of backflips and spirals, the wide expanse of deep blue ocean spread out before her. The water was cool against her fan of fur and the rays of light danced along with her own dancing movement. Suddenly, she saw a flash of movement in her peripherals, which was odd. She rarely saw creatures that large so close to the surface of the open ocean. To be fair, she rarely leaves the safe confines of her bay in Vietnam, happy with her solitude in the bay floor.
Seeming to have forgotten the large shape, Minh carried on in her aloof twirling through the waters. She did not notice the large esk until she was whisked through his whirlpool elemental. Akheilos, to his credit, did not notice the small esk until his familiars pointed out the struggling esk. Quickly, Akheilos calmed the tangle of raging waters surrounding him. Minh angrily turned towards the large esk but was taken captive by the intelligent look in his eyes. He was just like her: lonely and wandering. Another passing glimpse and she knew that he was the one Makoa wanted her to find.
My brethren. A whisper of words flowed past Minh and she lowered her head a fraction of an inch in acknowledgement. But, before she could say anything in response, another small shape barreled into her side. The small, sandy colored esk looked at her and Akheilos in confusion. Akheilos noted that the esk was clearly disoriented and has never been in the open ocean for so long; another look confirmed his theory that she was sent by Makoa as well. You received the message too. He casually remarked.
The small esk whipped her head around in shock before letting out a whisper of wonder; You too? Both of you?
Minh gave her another wordless acknowledgement before turning towards the beckoning blue of the ocean. We should continue on, solve the mysteries our creator had hinted at. With that, they continued on, Minh leading the way.
To be honest, Minh had no idea where she was going, she just had a feeling deep down that she was going the right way, diving down into the depths of the ocean. The rays of light she had previously danced around were reduced to a measly trickle. The only comfort she had were the two companions she had, following her to the journey's end. Wordlessly, the three started to pass over a gaping trench.
The crack in the earth seemed to be bottomless, not a horror Oria wanted to subject herself to. She started to doubt Minh’s leadership. Did the tiny esk really know where she was going? Oria turned towards Akheilos. That esk seemed a lot more confident and powerful, a better choice to lead. At that very moment, the slender esk turned his head knowingly towards her, his eyes swimming with untold secrets. Not being able to stand his withering gaze, Oria turned her attention towards the trench that only seemed to get wider beneath them.
Sweep danced in through her dark home, her glowing markings bounced off the sheer wall of rock surrounding her. She longed for a companion to share her solitude in the endless, lonely dark depths. As if hearing her wish and answering, three dark shapes passed overhead. Sweep gazed up at them in wonder and she found herself unintentionally drifting up to meet them. Before she knew it, she popped up in front of them, thoroughly startling the sandy colored esk. With a squeak, Sweep threw out her fan of fur in hopes of shading herself from the sudden burn of sunlight. Frantically, Sweep twirled in the warmer waters helplessly looking for a reprieve from the light until the largest esk swooped over her, providing shelter in his shadow. The small, dark esk resembling Sweep regarded her with a sharp glance before softening toward her.
How would you like to join us on an adventure? The esk asked her with a motherly tone. The sandy colored esk, still startled let out a cry of argument that was silenced by a glance from Akheilos. Sweep tentatively swam towards the comforting esk who wrapped her in a warm embrace. It only took her a few moments to decide that she really wanted to go with these esk, leaving the comforts of her home.
Oria was wet, uncomfortable, miserable, spooked, and wet. What was she doing here? Why wasn’t she playing in the hot sand and chasing crabs on her beach in the tropics. This was ridiculous, but at least the group of four was nearing warmer and brighter waters. Good riddance, she thought, the dark trench was decrepit and dreary. And the esk that emerged from the depths was even odder, but Oria couldn’t help but feel affection towards the small thing. Sweep was much more alert now, darting in between Akheilos’s fins and taking in the new sights and colors of the reef they were swimming through.
An excited shout emerged from said small esk, Look! What is that? She gestured towards a large, shiny shape in the water. It looks like what the humans sat in on top of the water, but underwater. She turned away in disgust, those things spat out the foulest of substances and made an ungodly amount of noise.
Nothing you want to see. Oria snapped hatefully towards the vessel. It’s an unnatural device of the human’s making.
It’s called a boat. And this one looks broken. Perhaps it is what Makoa wanted us to discover. Akheilos’s voice drifted over the group like a blanket. He swam, determined, towards the boat. Akheilos did not bother to check and see if the rest of the group were behind him. To his delight, he sensed another esk presence within the ship.
Leisurely, a gray esk floated out of the large crack in the metal hull. She squinted lazily up at him before saying: I know why you are here.
You do? Minh said in wonder, keeping close to Sweep as a comforting figure.
Oh yes, there is a strange esk, with a strange aura near the underwater ruins not far from here. I will take you there. She swam out of the ship and beckoned the group with a flick of her tail. To be honest, Shoal was glad they had come, giving her an excuse to investigate this odd esk and not be alone whilst doing so. She picked up her speed, not wanting to delay this meeting anymore. Slowly, broken towers and arches peeked over the sandy dunes, giving way to an expansive underwater city. The five esk paused for a moment to admire this broken beauty, lost in time. The city seemed to have sunk into a peaceful coexistence with the creatures of the sea. And there, in the middle of the main archway, stood an esk radiating power. They looked uncomfortable in the watery setting, they obviously did not belong here. But, still, they were here with something to say... ---
