My first Inside Out fan art. I'm very happy with this. Fear is my favorite character. Not only do I tend to be drawn to the nerd characters but he fascinated me. I tend to see things in characters most people don't. When I first saw the film I was baffled by Fear being portrayed as a coward as I'm used to other representations of him being the object of fear. Think Freddy Kruger. But I also realized that Fear in this movie is a child. So I though it would be great if he eventually learned just what power he has. Another thing that is interesting is that in real life fear is more powerful than anger. It is the most powerful emotion and with that in mind I got this idea. Tired of getting smashed into the console, punched and burned all the time by Anger, Fear finally discovers his true powers and it's time for some pay back. What would scare Anger? Well being a fire type I'm sure he wouldn't like a huge wall of water coming out to put out his fire for good. I see this potential in Fear and love that he's this cool in reality. His powers change depending on who he's scaring. What's more powerful than knowing your biggest weakness and exploiting it?I don't think I've ever colored anything with so much purple before. I tend to use mostly blues/aquas in my art as that's my favorite color.
I finally have a full story for this. This is a turning point scene from my comic Fear Before the Fall.

We people don't actually know how important Fear is to Riley. Think about it.
Riley was dared by one of the kids at school to do a dangerous stunt. That stunt could have been to jump over a car, or ride a skateboard off a cliff, use your imagination. And what stopped Riley from doing so, getting injured badly or even killed. Fear. Fear protects Riley and make sure not only Riley, but all the Other emotions stay alive. He may seem like a stupid cowardous dork in the movie, but in reality he's doing what he does best, and that job is extremely important.
now this may seem like a bunch of jumbo jumbo from a Fear fan, but I think it makes sense.

This isn't Riley's mind. But yes you're still right. Preaching to the choir here. I don't understand those adrenaline junkies that do stupid things like jump into cactuses and other dumb things. But they are fun to laugh at. But there are also many things not worth being afraid of which is the opposite extreme and definitely cowardly. Rational fear is the balance to strive for. And that's what my story is about.

Interesting concept for Fear. .3. There's just something about taking a favorite character and making them kind of suffer, but somehow it makes them more likable.

Thanks. Oh I totally understand. I love to torture my favorite characters. The more I love a character the worse off their lives usually are. My own original characters have it very rough. Stories need conflict and strife to be interesting. Thanks for the comment. I like your icon.

Hmm, although your input about fear is pretty creative, I think Fear himself would be against this. I mean it's against his job to terrify people, he's the one who is the terrified and always alert type of character, it's his job to keep Riley safe, sane, and alive.
But on the other hand, I'd kinda like to see how fear gets out of control. Panic would be one, but this is another

Not necessarily. It must suck to be insecure and afraid of everything all the time. I have no doubt he wishes he was more confident and that has now been granted to him. The emotion fear does have a duality. It does keep us safe and from doing stupid things like jumping off a building. But it also can cause terror and fright. A very primal emotion ingrained from ages of survival instinct to run from predators and danger. I'm sure it must get to him as well that's he's anger's outlet. Even the nicest people have their breaking point and I am fascinated to find out just what that breaking point is. This is not Riley's mind. I'm taking the story to the mind of a different host all together as the way this story is turning out seems this person is ruled by Anger and not Joy.
I'm glad you like it though as you'll see this is actually the first time Fear has any sort of control at all. No longer Fear itself but the object of Fear. It's a fun concept to explore. See my journal post on my profile for more thoughts on why I'm writing him this way.

I agree with you about the emotion of fear. A lot of my best decisions for me have been based on fear, and naturally speaking fear is necessary for survival, so it certainly is the most powerful emotion.
This is a great take on things from your perspective. I tend to see things in characters that most people don't either; mostly the one's I'm obsessed with like Arpeggio. Haha, I guess Anger will be taking Fear's designated place during this ordeal.

Yes it is very important. Definitely keeps us from making wrong choices and stupid action. It is meant as a defense mechanism
Yeah I just saw so much untapped potential in him the way he was in the movie. I've studied this emotion years before this movie came out and some things they did confused me as it's not like that in psychology. But that's why I make my own art. Yes the roles have sort of reversed here.
