Description LSO: "107 Call the ball..."

Pilot: "107, Valkyrie ball, 2.8"

LSO: "Raaaaager Ball...."

Valkyrie 107 Of SVF-41 makes it's approach to ARMD-07 During a shakedown cruise following the latter's refit in Lunar orbit. Pilots were expected to maintain proficiency in all types of recovery, in this case the traditional CV Pattern to an arrested landing, similar to the Prometheus. One of the Refits to the ARMD platforms was to replace steel cable arresting gear with gravity control technology from the exploitation of the Super Dimensional Fortress. Additionally the Maneuver Verniers on the Valkyrie figured into the way the Mecha flew a similar 3.5 degree glideslope ingrained in all Naval Aviators on Earth aboard Aircraft Carriers.

SVF-41 was one of the many Valkyrie units to be formed as a last line of defense against the feared return of the Zetraedi fleet. Carrier qualifications during their shakedown were a priority while the SDF-1 Was away from Earth on her epic journey homeward from Pluto following the tragic fold that stranded over 70,000 civilians in deep space.

Black Ace 107 is a VF-1J in a standard RDF Brown Combat livery, replete with yellow squadron markings and Blue Modex (107) . The CAG jet (not pictured) carries a light gray overall scheme and is typically flown by the Commanding Officer.

This is one of your best pics. The linework is very clean and crisp, the captured motion is well defined, and the composition is very balanced on the diagonal. The color shading is very good, does not detract from or obscure the linework and adds to the sense that this could have been lifted from the cartoon itself. The amount of details where needed is an interesting bonus, such as the view into the cockpit of the Valkyrie from behind and the flight deck of the A.R.M.D. platform. Its almost like it is a production still from Studio Nue; this would work as a reference pic for animation.

Very nice work! Just one nitpick: those βŠ– style objects aren't control jets but recessed attachment points. So I was completely wrong and learnt something new.

"107, fly the bullseye. 107, this Marshall, mother is case one, expect ARMD-07 approach...You're lined up right."

Honestly, while I prefer the original Macross over Robotech, I love your valkyrie artwork.

this is nice. Gives a taste of what was going on on Earth, the Moon, and Mars while the SDF-1 was sailing back from Pluto.

Wonder what the "double nuts" bird is?? Could he be one of the 4 Valks that are just entering the pattern in the background?

There is a CAG jet out there on the internet somewhere. It is grey with a black tail and stripes and skull with a heat over one eye. Similar to the Skull 001 motif.

This is so cool! As if a cell was taken from a lost prequal. Great to see Robotech art, especially Macross, alive and well.

Funny that they would use classic carrier landings rather than Harrier type vertical landings.

LeElf In reply to JRGTS [2012-05-07 14:23:17 +0000 UTC]

Hi JRGTS! Yes, that is idea. I always liked the way the original SDF Macross episodes looked when the A team was doing the animation. They had such depth and character. The carrier landings are based on a couple of assumptions.

a. We know from the show that it was necessary to do on the Prometheus
b. Though the only Valkyrie action we get comes from DYRL movie, and they are seen using docking arms, I infer from teh design of the ARMD platform that the large blue space has to serve a purpose. Visually it seems most likely to be a landing area. The logical assumption is what I assert in the write up above. Overtechnology, or Protoculture exploitation to harness gravity. We already know they can walk inside the ships artificial gravity.
c. There are other methods of recovery, (Guardian, Battloid, docking arms), but this seems to remain the most efficient.

The A Team scene that sticks in my memory is when Miriya raids the SDF-1 and Max is doing his battloid dogfighting. The animation was great and even the tearing sound of the gatling guns was perfect.

One of the BEST episodes when it comes to the quality of the animation. Others I liked was Boobytrap, Showdown, and Season's Greeting

The best compliment that I could get. yes, the intent is to represent Macross/Robotech as faithfully as can be done. I draw heavily on SDF Macross with great inlfuence from DYRL. This is a TRUE fan's work...a what if...if you will! Thanks for your interest and support Kelso!

Hi Karanua, you are right, they are a fantastic concept that was not fully explored in SDF macross! Fortunately they got some TLC in DYRL. This is my attempt to bring them into SDF Macross/Robotech. A great design, one of the lost gems of Sci-Fi Capital ships. Thanks for the interest and support!
