Description

It felt like an eternity to Cyel, when in reality, it’d only been about a week an a half since the incident had gone down. Topaz still hadn’t reformed, but Cyel was trying to convince herself that she was just trying to get her form juuust right, and nothing was physically wrong with her gem. She had lost count how many times she’d looked it over to make sure there were no cracks, and every time she told herself that Topaz was fine, and she’d reform when she was ready… And then she’d look again to make sure she really was okay.

The water within her sea cave shimmered on the ceiling above them, and Cyel laid on her stomach with her chin in her hands, simply staring down at Topaz’s gem. She’d hardly moved from this spot, wanting to be here when Topaz came back. It wasn’t a heavy price to pay, especially since the whole collapsing of the cliff was… technically her fault..

Just as Cyel was about to dwell on that for the billionth time, a bright light erupted from Topaz’s gemstone and it lifted into the air, filling the room with a brilliant glow. Jumping to her feet with a relieved smile, Cyel watched as the light filtered through each of Topaz’s previous forms, until it finally settled on a new one.

Color came to the form of light and Topaz was lowered onto her feet.

“Phew, finally! It was getting stuffy in ther-”

Suddenly, Topaz was tackled to the ground; Cyel’s arms were wrapped around her waist, and she was clinging to her like she was her only lifeline. “Topaz!” cried Cyel, her voice muffled in her shoulder. “I’m so sorry! It was my fault, I set off my bombs, I didn’t know the ground was going to collapse, it’s more brittle than I thought, I was trying to be careful and I got you poofed, I’m so sorry, I-”

“Hey!” Topaz grabbed Cyel’s face and pulled her away so she could look her in the eye. “Hey, Cyel, it’s not your fault! It’s okay, I promise! I needed a change anyway, hehe!”

Cyel’s face was covered in tears, but she nodded, though she was not entirely convinced. Instead, she grabbed her and hugged her again, almost deciding she was never going to let her go. She’d have to walk around with Cyel wrapped around her waist, she didn’t care.

“I’m happy to see you, too,” Topaz said softly, running her fingers through Cyel’s hair lovingly. As though it suddenly occurred to Topaz, she sat up straight and her eyes widened. “Azotic!”

“She left,” Cyel sniffled, rubbing her face dry from any leftover tears and sitting up. “she didn’t try and come after you again. It was weird.. she almost looked… happy that you just poofed.”

Remaining silent, Topaz took Cyel’s hands in her own and stood to her feet, lifting her up with her. There was no exchange of words as they left Cyel’s cave and walked out into the evening light; the sunset was casting a pink and orange glow across everything it touched, and the air was fresh with the smell of nearby flowers. Sighing, Topaz sat down on a rock and stared out at the slowly darkening sky. Cyel quietly followed suit, peering over at Topaz once in a while just to make sure she was alright. Her expression was downcast and Cyel…. didn’t really know how to deal with that. Topaz always had been a ray of sunshine and positivity, but it seemed like all of this had really taken it out of her.

“Topaz, I...” Cyel wrung her hands together. “If you want to talk about what happened, you know you can talk to me, right?”

Turning to smile meekly at Cyel, Topaz nodded, then leaned over, resting her head on her shoulder. “Thanks, Cyel..” Everything was quiet for a short moment, before Topaz lifted her head and spoke once more. “Azotic.. was like that from the time we emerged from the ground.” she explained quietly. “We both went through this… identity crisis, I guess. Except I was more than I should have been, and she was less.” she stared down at her feet. “We knew what we were originally supposed to be, what our original tasks were supposed to be, but because we came out different, what we thought we were was wrong. We didn’t actually know what we were meant to be.”

“That’s why you don’t know anything about yourself...” Cyel mumbled, mostly to herself. She remembered when Topaz couldn’t even summon her own weapon. Topaz had no idea how “high class” of a Gem she was. Maybe she had had an inkling of an idea, but really, there was so much that Topaz should have known, but didn’t.

“Right,” Topaz nodded, then continued. “Azotic spent her time trying to act tougher than she was and I guess I’ve always acted less tough than I am.” Leaning back some, she peered up at the sky. “We hadn’t been in commission very long, and one day, Azotic asked to go on a walk… We went really far away from our quarters, we were looking out the Beta Kindergarten, and she just… stabbed me, right in the back.”
Eyes widening in horror, Cyel leaned in, enveloped in what Topaz was telling her.

“I don’t know what she did after that, I just know that I was under a ton of rocks and dirt, awake and aware of every moment. I guess she just told them that we’d been attacked by the rebels or something.” Topaz sighed and stood up, hands folded in front of her. “Azotic never got over what happened, and I guess I never did either, I just tried to not think about it.”

Cyel quietly stood up and placed a her hand in one of Topaz’s. “I-- had no idea..”

“I never told you,” Topaz laughed weakly. “Not because I didn’t trust you enough or anything, but because it doesn’t matter. I’m Topaz, and your Cyel, and she’s Azotic. There’s nothing any of us can do except be ourselves, and one day, Azotic’s gonna realize that and… hopefully stop trying to kill me.”

The statement itself wasn’t particularly funny, or rather, it wasn’t even a little bit funny, but the two of them still laughed; what else could they do, sit around and feel sorry for themselves? That just wasn’t their style. After a moment of silence, Cyel shyly bumped her hip against Topaz’s. “I like your new form.”

Grinning girlishly, Topaz turned to face her and took Cyel’s other hand, intertwining their fingers together. “You do?”

“Yeah!”

“Of course you do, you HAVE to!”

“No I don’t!” Cyel laughed, freeing one of her hands and tugging curiously at the bow. “Did you steal idea this from Rubellite?”

“You caught me!” Topaz whined with a mock expression of embarrassment. “It’s just so pretty!" Cyel huffed a breathy giggle and reached out, straightening the bow and smiling fondly.
“Well, I think it suits you.”
