“Hey Kiku!” Hearing your voice, the Japanese teenager turned around to greet you. “Ah, Konnichiwa, (name)-san. How are you today?” You sighed. “I’m doing pretty well, but there is something that I’m worried about.” Kiku looked puzzled. He knew that you were not the type to get depressed over the slightest thing. Rather, it was the opposite. It had to be something important to you.
“What is wrong, (name)-san?” You sighed again. “Kiku... I found this in my locker.” Holding up a letter and a red rose, you showed them to Kiku. Kiku took the letter from your hands, and read the contents silently. You spoke up as he read, “I really didn’t know what to do…” Kiku remained deep in thought, but after looking over the contents again, he finally said, “(name)-san, how do you feel about this love letter?”
“I want to know who wrote it to me… He gave me a rose. A red one. That has to mean something, right? If the letter wasn’t already obvious enough...” Though I wish that the person who wrote me this letter was you, Kiku… Kiku had transferred into your school a year ago, and you became friends with him when you talked with him about anime. Over time, you felt more and more attracted to him, and you couldn’t deny the fact that you liked him any longer. It seemed inevitable. But Kiku has never shown any affection for you, and you know he likes to keep his personal space to himself after attempting to give him a friendly hug.
“Maybe if I asked around, someone could tell me who it is.” You looked around, hoping to find someone who could’ve seen who had put the letter inside the locker. “But the letter asked you to meet him at the roof at 4 pm, didn’t it? Maybe you could wait and see who it is…” Kiku replied nervously. It was obvious that he was uncomfortable with the idea of asking people about the love letter.
“I simply can’t wait! Just think about it carefully, Kiku…what if the guy was someone who didn’t really like me and it’s just a prank?” Kiku nodded. “Yes, it is certainly a possibility. I’ll go with you when you meet him then. But if you still want to ask around, I will still accompany you.”
“Kiku, thanks! You’re a lifesaver!” Fighting the urge to hug him, you bowed slightly to Kiku, as a sign of gratitude. Kiku blushes slightly as he bowed to you too. “It’s quite alright, (name)-san. We are friends after all.”
Looking at the letter, you remembered that you saw Francis in the library a few minutes ago. “Kiku, let’s go see Francis. I want to ask him about this.” Kiku silently followed you, and the tension was building. Maybe it’s just me, but is Kiku extremely nervous? Nah… just my imagination… Taking a left, you entered the library, and saw Gilbert hanging out with Francis at a small table.
“Hey, Francis, Gilbert!” You whispered loudly, gaining the attention of the two guys. “Hey Fraülein.” “Bonjour, (name).” You pulled out a chair and sat down at the table, with Kiku standing behind you. “I actually have a question for you. Do you know see anyone put anything into my locker?” Gilbert shook his head, and Francis kept a thoughtful look on his face.
“I don’t believe I saw anyone, fraülein. Es tut mir leid.” Seeing the disappointed look in your eyes, Gilbert suddenly became interested. “Wait, is it a love letter…and you don’t know who sent it?” You gasped. “How did you know?” Gilbert grinned and answered, “You underestimate the power of the awesome me, fraülein!”
Hearing Gilbert’s loud voice, the librarian turned around and said quietly to Gilbert,“You over there! Please be quiet in the library!” and returned to what she was doing. Gilbert pouted, whilst Francis came back to reality, finally answering, “I think I know who it is, (name).”
You grinned. “That’s great! Can you tell me?” Although you were facing Francis, you could feel Kiku going frigid. “It’s for you to figure out. After all, it’s someone you know pretty well…and telling you now would ruin it.” He smiled knowingly, irritating you. “Francis, how can you be so sure that it’s someone that I know?”
Francis merely shook his head in response, and Gilbert nodded knowingly too, as if he too knew who the person is. “It’s no use, fraülein. There’s no making him tell you. But it seems that the awesome me knows who it is too!” You turned to face the white-haired idiot Prussian. “Then can you tell me, Gilbert?”
“Too bad, fraülein. The awesome me’s not allowed to tell.” Disappointed, you moved away from the library table. “Fine. I’ll ask others. Let’s go, Kiku.” Kiku looked as you walked away from the table, letting out a sigh. He quickly caught up to you, and his presence was almost comforting.
“I’ve never had something like this happen to me! It’s almost as if Francis wants me to hook up with the guy!” Kiku, slightly flustered, replied, “(name)-san, I’m sure he simply wants you to give the guy a chance. Please don’t hate him for it.”
“Never mind what Francis says. I’ll ask Eliza or Lily...maybe I’ll even have Arthur do his magic.”
Kiku went pale. How far is she willing to go for this?!
*
“Why wouldn’t anyone tell me who it is?! It’s so frustrating!” You frowned, eyebrows scrunched together. It was a useless attempt; no one was willing to tell you who it is. Eliza chuckled after hearing what you had to say and told you to figure it out yourself, Lily and her brother avoided you after you just asked them the question. Ludwig didn’t give you a chance; with his embarrassed expression, he quickly said he didn’t know. Even the most clueless guy, Alfred, knew who it was and had the nerve to refuse to tell you. You felt a sudden pang of guilt. Is it because I did something wrong?
Looking down at your watch, you saw that it was already four, and rushed up the stairs to the rooftop. You slammed the door open, and took a sweeping glance. There was no one there.
“I knew it! It was just a prank!” You laughed nervously. I must have looked like a fool…
“No, it’s not.” Hearing Kiku speak up for the first time after a long silence, you looked at him.
He stepped forward onto the rooftop, and bowed down before you. “I’m very sorry…(name)-san. I-“ He looked up from his position, only to see tears streaming down your face. Immediately becoming flustered, he quickly reached into his pocket and handed you his handkerchief, which you took gingerly from his hands.
As you wiped your eyes, you sat down on the floor, unable to say anything. The cold wind started to blow, making you sneeze. Kiku saw that you weren’t wearing warm clothing, and took off his own jacket and covered you with it. You could feel the warmth coming from the jacket, and gripped onto one of its sleeves.
After managing to compose yourself, you spoke up. “So…you have something to say to me, don’t you?” Kiku shuffled his feet, and you could see that his hands were trembling. He was blushing as he fidgeted, attempting to speak.
After a few moments, he managed to stammer out, saying, “I…I- Ilikeyou, (name)-san… so please go out with me!”
You grinned mischievously to yourself. I don’t think he will see this coming… “I didn’t think you’d make everyone go through this…I can’t date a guy who’d trick me like that.”
Kiku looked extremely ashamed, clutching onto his handkerchief. Now that I look at it carefully, that’s mine… You looked at Kiku quizzically. “Kiku, is that mine?” You asked him, pointing towards your handkerchief in his hand. He nodded forlornly. “But it seems unworthy for me to keep it now. I’ll get out of your way.”
He handed you the handkerchief, but when you reached out to take it, you grasped his hand instead, pulling him into a hug. “You are too cruel to me, Kiku. That’s why I had to say that. I’m sorry if it was extremely awkward when I went asking around about that letter.”
Kiku still in shock, slowly wrapped his arms around you. “No…I’m sorry. I should have told you the truth from the start.” You gripped Kiku tighter. If I’d known sooner…
“So…I’ll give you my real answer. I’ll date you, Kiku. 私も...君のことが好きです…(Watashi mo, kimi no koto ga suki desu/ I like you too.)” You broke away from the hug, and pulled out a box of chocolates, specially wrapped in a sakura-patterned paper. “The reason I was so agitated, was because I didn’t want to hear someone else’s confession… But rather, wanted to confess to you myself…So, will you go out with me?”
Kiku, shocked that he’d been outdone by his crush, gently took the chocolates from your hand.
“Yes. Yes, I will go out with you, (name)-san."
“Yay!!!!!!!!! They did it!!!”
Everyone burst onto the roof, cheering, crying, and even hugging each other. They were watching? Oh god….
You looked at Kiku, whose face was a deep shade of red, probably mirroring yours.
“You guys took forever! Man, we’ve been waiting for this to happen since the start of the school year! Whoo hoo! Let’s have a party, baby!” That obnoxious American…
But you smiled anyway, and Kiku smiled too.
It truly had been a great day to confess.
*
“Wait, so why do you have my handkerchief?”
“I’ll tell you some other time, (name)-san.”
“Since we’re going out now, call me (name)!”
“Yes…(name)… san…. ”
“Kiku, someday I’m going to have you call me (name)!"
