AN: I am warning all of you here... that this will be a really sad one. Don't read if you hate sad stuff. But for those of you who love tearjerkers, this might be the thing for you guys. Also, the ending might go against some of your religious beliefs, so if you are easily offended, please refrain from reading. Hope you enjoy the story.... *goes to sob in the corner*
"What is it, Ludwig? What did the doctors say to you?" It was all you can do to keep your tears at bay. You knew that the answer you were dreading was coming. Is it going to be months? Please, God, be merciful... But Ludwig only shakes his head, his proud, broad shoulders slumped, as if he has given up. "Please, Ludwig, I need to know the truth." Your pleading voice made Ludwig look at you with blank eyes. "(name), I'm sorry. Ich... I... Gil..." It was all too hard for the German, who couldn't keep his tears in anymore. Finally mustering up enough strength, he whispered , "He...has no... limit. He can just suddenly...die."
And it was that moment of silence after those words that struck you dumb. It was as if time would not move; you were frozen in time and space. The only thing bringing you back to reality was short, muffled sobs that came from the German beside you and your own heavy breathing. No, it can't be... He was so healthy then... The two of you remained on the bench outside the doctor's office, struck dumb by the revelation that the time to say goodbye is drawing near.
After a long silence, Ludwig spoke up with his shaky voice. "I haven't told him yet. But I think... he knows he doesn't have long left." You nodded, your own tear-stained face pale with grief. You were unable to reply. How was a person supposed to reply when they hear that their most beloved person in their life was about to die? You buried your face into your hands. "If...if only I could switch places with him..." Seeing how upset you are, Ludwig placed a hand around your waist.
"Liebe, I'm sorry... I loved him as much as you did." His hoarse voice reminded you that it was not you alone who bore the grief. Ludwig did too. "Do you think... that I can go see him?" Ludwig nodded. "It's the usual room. I'll just wait for you here. I don't think you should tell him the truth... I'd rather keep bruder in the dark." You nodded.
Somehow, you managed to dragged your legs to the ward that Gilbert was staying in. Knocking on the door, you heard the Gilbert's voice. "Come on in... I know it's you, frau." You stepped into the room, carefully closing the door behind you. At the sight of the your lover's pale face and thin body, your eyes filled with tears, despite the fact that you used to be so happy to see him. Raising your voice, you say, "Gil... Ich liebe dich." Gilbert, looking at you with his bright red eyes knew that something was wrong, but grinned at you anyway. "Ich liebe dich auch, (name)." His outstretched arms and his cheerful grin made you walk into his embrace.
"(name)... I want to ask you something awesome." You looked at him, waiting for him to ask you. "Will you marry me?" Hearing Gilbert propose to you was enough to make you collapse onto the floor. It was as if Fate was taunting you with its cruelty. But this was someone more precious than life itself; you loved him so much, you would ask for a second chance from God. And perhaps, this would be the right answer. "...Yes, yes... I'll marry you, Gilbert." Although your eyes are filled with tears, your heart filled with pain, you grabbed Gilbert's hands and smiled.
Gilbert looked at you with pain in his eyes, finally giving up trying to appear cheerful. After being lovers for five years, you knew very well what he was worried about. "(name), I love you... and I hate saying this, but you are what makes my life awesome. Without you, it really has no meaning..." Gilbert's red eyes were filled with tears as he spoke. "I want you to be with you forever... but I know that I have little time left. It's almost as if God decided to give me just enough time to say goodbye to you. Ludwig and Eliza are gonna kill me in my death. How unawesome." He chuckled, tears spilling out his eyes as he did so.
"No! Don't say that! Don't you say that again!" You tightened your grip on his hands, as if to keep him from going. But you knew it was futile. "Gil, no matter where you are, you will always be precious to me. Don't be so pessimistic! Even if you think you are nearing your death, it only means you have to live your life fully." You took a deep breath, strengthening your resolve. "It's not as if this is goodbye... I'm sure I'll meet you again, someday. Even if it takes a million lifetimes, I will find you... and fall in love with you again. So, in this life, let's get married, and live your best life...Gil."
After your emotional outburst, you couldn't take it anymore. You held onto Gilbert's fragile body, as his thin arms slowly wrap around your waist. "(name), I..." Gilbert started with his shaky voice, and started to cough violently, flailing like a fish out of water. "No! Gil!" You quickly let go of Gilbert, and reached for the call button.
"No! (name)... (na-..." Gilbert looked at you desperately, panting and coughing. "Don't do it. I know... they can't... save me anymore... They told me... that the next time...I have a fit, I'll... I'll die." You widened your eyes. So he knew after all... Blood and bile started pouring out of Gilbert's mouth, and he gargled, struggling to speak. "(name)... come... to...me..." You let go of the button hanging at his bedside, and put your warm hands on his cold face. Gilbert lifted his bloodstained hands to touch your own, and looked at you. "(name), promise me... Don't... ever... forget...my...awesome...self, kay?" Coughing up more blood, his eyes turning blank.
"Gil! Don't go yet! Look at me!" You shouted, desperately trying to catch his attention. "I...promise. I'll find you. I love you. Ich liebe dich, Gilbert...please, just don't go yet...." Gilbert smiled, using his last ounce of strength to place his cold lips on yours. You could taste the bitter, metallic taste in his mouth, but you just couldn't let go. But as the cold Gilbert drifted from you, he smiled his last smile, whispering, "Ich liebe dich...auch, (name)........"
And then you were surrounded by silence.
Gilbert lay in his bed, peacefully, covered by his now crimson blanket. The blood on his mouth and chin was becoming colder by the moment, but his eyes remained closed, as if it was merely an afternoon nap.
Suddenly the door slammed opened, and you could here Ludwig shouting, but you couldn't really figure out what he was saying. Everything was a blur. Everything felt so numb, everything was silent.
The beautiful white sundress that you were wearing was now dark red, stained by Gilbert's blood. You just sat there, as if time has stopped only for you and not for anyone else surrounding you.
"(naaaaaaammmmmmmeeeeee)....." There was someone calling for you. Who is it now? Is it Gilbert? Is he back now?
"(naaaammmmeee)...." The deep voice became clearer.
"(name)!!!" You opened your eyes, only to meet Ludwig's clear blue eyes. "(name), are you alright?" You opened your mouth and closed it again. It seems as if you have lost all your words, you can no longer speak.
Ludwig's worried face looked at you, and sighed, as if he was weary of this world. "I know...it's hard, isn't it?" Ludwig placed your small bloodstained hands within his large ones, his eyes full of pain yet understanding. Unable to utter anything, you nodded, mirroring his pained expression.
"I heard your promise, as you said goodbye to him, (name)." You let out a small cry, a sound that might have came from a dying animal. "I know you'll wait to see him again. But you won't be alone, (name). We'll be waiting together..." The strong blue eyes conveyed the depths of the emotions within Ludwig, and you smiled at him. "In the next million lives we'll be together again. Next time, you'll become my sister-in-law, and we'll all laugh together just like the old days...."
Finally feeling the strength coming back to you, you reply tearfully, "As I said goodbye...I know that he will always be with us, just like the wind. Even now, when he's gone... he's with us. Someday.... I just know it, Luddy... just like you said, we'll meet him again."
