Seeing that it was the best decision to leave Ludwig’s house, you and Gilbert decided to go back to the graveyard and think about who to visit next. Exiting the house, you decided to stay a human to conserve your power. Returning to your human form, you stopped hovering above the ground as your angel’s garb and aura fade away to nothingness. Gilbert looked at your transformation with amazement, but you ignored his awestruck stares and continued to walk forward whilst he stumbled on the ground, despite his ability to pass through everything.

How does he even do that? Can souls even stumble over their own feet? Wait, what am I thinking?! I, Luce de Vita, am pondering about a mere soul? How unbecoming of me… You walked down the footpath with thoughts of Gilbert plaguing your mind. “Er… Your Honor?” What is wrong with me? Why am I doing this? “Err… YOUR HONOR?” I may be unable to render fair judge- “Oi, SCHATZ!” Gilbert’s voice cuts through the air, taking you by surprise as you got out of your thoughts.

“What is it, Beilschmidt? And why aren’t you calling me by my title?” You glared at the Prussian with intensity. “The awesome did, but you didn’t hear me. What’s wrong, frau- I mean, Your Honor?” Seeing the man’s slightly concerned face, you replied nonchalantly, “It is none of your concern.” Gilbert made pouty face and replied, “Well if you’re gone, who’s going to take me to Judgement Day? And the awesome me hasn’t said goodbye to everyone yet.” You sighed. This self-centered man… really infuriates me at times.

“I get it, Beilschmidt. We have to hurry, it’s already getting darker.” Walking faster and trying to rid your mind of the thoughts, you quickly walked towards the graveyard, whilst Gilbert quickened his pace to keep up with you. Reaching the graveyard, you started walking back to Gilbert’s grave only to see the woman you talked to earlier standing in front of the gravestone. Gilbert, finally catching up to you, stepped forward, hoping to see her, but you stopped him, blocking his path with your arm.

“What is it, Your Honor?” Gilbert snapped at you in irritation, but noticing your unusual silence returned his stare back to the woman, and he gasped. Although only her back was visible, you and Gilbert could see her shoulders shaking uncontrollably, her legs eventually giving in as she fell to the ground, kneeling in front of the slab of stone with his name on it. “Gil…hic… Gil…”

Gilbert walked towards her, but you did not stop him this time. He stood in front of the crying woman, and knelt down, touching her shoulders. “Hey Eliza. Stop crying…stop it.” The hysterical woman could not hear his voice, despite him being right in front of her, and her beautiful emerald eyes kept pouring out tears, and Gilbert was visibly more than just upset. “Verdamnt! Just why?! Why can’t she just see me!” Gilbert shouted, his hands thrusted into his unkempt white hair, his red eyes glowing.

Seeing another unsettling scene, you walked towards the woman, standing behind her. “It seems like we meet again, Ms Héderváry…” Elizabeta looked up at you, and quickly wiped away her tears with her handkerchief, and quickly replaced her sad expression with her usual happy one. “How can I help you?” You shook your head, and said, “Ms. Héderváry, I have something to tell you.”

Extending your hand towards the puzzled woman, you looked at her with sincerity, hoping that she would take your hand. She took your hand with a sense of gratefulness, and you felt like you understood why Gilbert was so infatuated with her. You slowly led her to a park bench, where you both sat down. Gilbert stayed floating in the air, and looked at you anxiously with a hint of curiosity towards your actions.

Breaking the silence, you say, “Ms. Héderváry, I will say something that will most likely offend you.” Elizabeta nodded, waiting for you to continue. Exhaling slowly, you say, “Your unwillingness to accept Beilschmidt’s death will bound his soul to the Earth, leaving him alone for eternity.” Elizabeta glared at you, upset at your words. “That’s not true! Gil’s already gone! He already left us! Unless you can prove otherwise, I won’t believe it!”

“Eliza…” Gilbert whispered painfully, seeing how much his unexpected death had caused the girl he loved so much pain. “What I am saying is true, despite your unwillingness…or rather, your inability to accept the truth.” You replied, almost coldly, much to the shock of the brunette. “Who are you to know anyway? You are only just an outsider! Someone who hardly knows Gil at all!” Realizing what she blurted out was hurtful, she clasped her own mouth in shock.

I don’t even understand I feel upset at all. He’s just another soul, someone who I’m supposed to escort to heaven. “There is no need for concern, Ms. Héderváry. I don’t feel upset or offended.” You turned around to look at Gilbert, who responded, “Fraulein, please… don’t upset her.” You shook your head, and said, “Just tell me what you want to tell her, Beilschmidt.”

Elizabeta now looked at you with fear. “Why are you talking to the empty space, Miss? Just what are you?” You turned back to face Elizabeta, and replied calmly, “This is the proof you wanted. He’s right here, but you can’t see him, can you?” Your words made Elizabeta reel back in shock, her eyes squeezing shut, her hands gripping her head, as if she was in pain. “NO! I DON’T BELIEVE YOU! HE’S GONE! Why are you telling this to me?! Why are you hurting me?!”

You looked at her with pity, and took her hands into yours. “Please listen to me, Ms. Héderváry… I will prove to you that Gilbert Beilschmidt is here with us. Although this would be remembered as a dream...Beilschmidt, this will be the only exception, alright?” Before Gilbert could respond to your words, you quickly chanted as you grabbed Beilschmidt’s hand, “In God’s name, the light shalt cleanse thee of thy sorrow, and thou shalt be free… Fiat Lux!” A blinding light enveloped Elizabeta’s body, creating a pillar of light, extending towards the sky.

As the light slowly died down, you let go of Gilbert’s hand, whilst Elizabeta gasped. “Gilbert… Gil… you’re here…” You smiled. Letting go of your hand, Elizabeta scrambled up from her position on the ground, reaching for the now visible Gilbert. “Gil…” Tears of happiness escaped her eyes, and she fell into Gilbert’s arms.

Gilbert’s expression was of shock, but he quickly embrace the woman in his arms, surprised that he could now touch her. “I can’t believe it…I can’t believe you’re here!” But as soon as the magic came, it faded into nothingness once again. Although Gilbert was still visible, Elizabeta fell through his body, landing on the ground once more.

Gilbert quickly knelt back down on the ground, hoping to pick Elizabeta up, but found that it was no use now that his hands went right through her body. “It’s fine now, Gil.” Elizabeta picked herself up, and brushed the dirt off her clothes. Gilbert looked at her dirty, scratched appearance, feeling guilty. Turning around to face you, Elizabeta put on a serious face. “Thank you for letting me see Gil again… I still have things to say to him, and I’m sure he has a lot to tell me too.”

You nodded. “Ms. Héderváry, please do not take long. Gilbert has only a few moments to until he becomes invisible once again.” Elizabeta nodded, and started to talk to Gilbert quietly, and you did not hear their conversation, but you made no attempt to listen. Why am I always so weak? Why do I give in so easily to Beilschmidt? It feels that he was someone very close to me… but I don’t have any recollection…

Brushing your thoughts aside, you see a laughing Gilbert and Elizabeta, and the very sight made you feel very happy. But at the same time, you feel a growing pain in your chest. Ignoring the pain, you decided to wait, looking at the tears slowly streaming down both faces.

As if he knew that his time is almost up, Gilbert said shakily, “It’s time I go, Eliza… I’ll meet you again someday.” Elizabeta nodded, her choked voice replying cheerfully, “See you later, Gil!”

Seeing how Elizabeta remained smiling, despite Gilbert fading into nothingness right in front of her made you wonder about humans. How are they so strong? If I were to see someone I truly cherished vanish before my very eyes again I would surely drop into despair… “Eliza’s a strong one… She always beats me up.” As if to answer your question, Gilbert spoke, appearing next to you once more.

After staring at the space where Gilbert once stood, Elizabeta approached you and said, “Miss, if you don’t mind… what exactly are you?” You smiled, replying, “Your memories of me will be wiped after learning my name… Is that alright?” Elizabeta nodded. “I’m prepared.”

Seeing her look of determination, you say, “Ms. Héderváry, I am (name), The Highest Order of Judgement of Souls, also known as Luce De Vita. I am the one who judges the souls of humans in the afterlife, and nearly all final decisions go through me.” Elizabeta did not gasp, and replied, “That’s what I expected… Why are you doing this for Gil, may I ask?”

"Now that’s a question that I don’t really know the answer to… Beilschmidt reminds me of a comrade, one that I hold dear to my heart. But I also did it because of you, Ms. Héderváry.” Elizabeta looked surprised, and you continued, “Your heart is pure… and most of your deeds are of kindness, despite your violent past. What God expects from humans is not to be without sin, but rather, to learn from past sins and change for good. That’s why I was allowed to give you hope, so that you will continue being good… so that one day you can reunite with Gilbert Beilschmidt."

Hearing your enlightening speech, Elizabeta smiled. “Thank you…from the very bottom of my heart.” Lowering her head, she whispers, "I know that it is time… Now that I have learned the truth, I’m ready.” As she closes her eyes, you placed your hand on Elizabeta’s forehead gently. “Of all my millenniums as an angel, I have never met one quite like you, Elizabeta Héderváry. I shall look forward to our reunion.” As you finished speaking, Elizabeta fell unconscious as you held her in your arms.

“Your Honor… can I ask for another favor?” Hearing Gilbert’s voice, you turned around and said irritably, “What is it? I’ve already used a highest ranked spell draining my power, and now you’re asking me for another favor?” Gilbert looked surprised, but recomposed himself. “I never thought… you’d go out of your way the awesome me… Danke, schatz. The awesome me just wanted to call you by… your real name, and you can call the awesome me Gil or whatever you want to… too.”

Now it was your turn to be surprised. Perhaps Beilschmidt isn’t so bad at showing gratitude after all… “Fine… just call me… Luce or Vita or (name)… and I’ll call you Gilbo.” “Yes!! I’ll call you (name), cuz (name) sounds way better than Luce or Vita! Wait… No! Why are you going to call me Gilbo! That is totally unawesome!”

Seeing the albino pout once again, you looked at him and laughed at his slow realization. Gilbert seemed to be flustered and confused, but most of all he was surprised to see you laughing for the first time since he met you. He felt a throb in his chest, and touched it in confusion, but smiled upon seeing you grinning.

“So angels actually are… human.” Hearing a mumble from the smiling Prussian, you quickly questioned him. “Tell me, Gilbo! What did you say?” “Nozhing, (name).” Hearing his accent, you knew he was either bad-mouthing you or embarrassed, so you took out your hammer. “Give me another testimony, would you, defendant? Or would you rather take the guilty verdict and repent for your sins for forever?”

Seeing the slightly scary yet serene smile, Gilbert quickly sprinted, whilst you shouted, “Come back, Gilbo!”

Perhaps this angel is the most abnormal one a person would encounter after their death…
