i keep wondering how he might have gotten them.

Uh... maybe he has a habit of scratching the back of his neck, his nails could be long enough to break skin, I used to actually do this often in my sleep when i would have night mares and night terrors (Some times it still happens)... once i woke up and my cheek was badly scratched up, i had accually clawed my face in my sleep i also scratch my neck and cheek out of nervousness or when i'm thinking... so that could be what he had done or maybe just a nasty hair cut job? I get nasty cuts to the back of my neck sometimes when i go...
Then there is also the sad reality that they could have been caused by someone else, i really hope that is not the case
Who really knows.
