Description
A while ago, Pone-Dancer did one of these challenges including my style, which both flattered me and made me want to try this for myself, someday. And I finally did. This was a lot of fun! I definitely recommend this challenge to anyone struggling to find inspiration. Before explaining which artists I tried to pay homage to here, I invite you to read the disclaimers in form of questions at the end of the description.
So, here we go! My main OC Stendhal Syndrome in the styles of:
1- EnderGurl22 . What I love the most about Ender's style are the smooth lines, with those big pointy snouts and fluffy tufts, and the lovely shading. While I think I managed to do a good job with the first one, I think the shading could have been better on the eye, but the one on the hair looks good. She uses a slightly different approach to shading/highlighting than mine, so it was challenging (but also nice) to change my modus operandi trying to understand where she would put a reflection of light or, instead, a darker zone. She also makes amazing facial expressions! To which bored Stendhal doesn't really do justice.
2 - Pone-Dancer . Her style is pleasant, cartoony and absolutely loveable. It's a style that's a lot of fun to draw and gives characters a very innocent look. I think it's because of the eye, where the iris and pupil are almost always quite big, as well as the backwards-pointing ears. The way she draws nostrils is also very personal: definitely had to include that. And I managed to include the glasses because I found a reference of how she draws glasses in the design of her main OC Tony.
3 - ElectraDust . A big "must" to draw in her style was using colored outlines. She's not the only artist in this panel that does that, but since it's a consistent feature and a feature that, to me, clearly speaks of her style, I decided to include that, which I normally wouldn't do, as I find it a bit tricky (hence why all the other portraits have black outlines, even when the original artists sometimes use colored outlines). The fluffy ear was also something I had to include, with that internal jagged line I saw in many of her drawings.
4 - mariebite787 . Where do I even start? Her style is radically different from anything else I've seen on this site. I can't exactly list what the main features are, either, as I just tried to draw every body parts like she usually does, because they all look very personal. To summarize a bit, I'd say her horses are slim, slinky, with very flowing, wavy manes and big eyebrows for expression. She also has her own way of coloring eyes, which instead of including a black pupil uses three gradations of the main color, with the darkest being the pupil.
5 - Strawberry-HeartRose . Also another very recognizable style, what I love the most about this is the "composite" feeling: you have the round head, the sharper looking muzzle and jaw, the polygonal eyes, the rounded ear with the sharper central element... and then the tufts! My interpretation doesn't really do it justice, but she's great at drawing manes. Her shading is also composite, being sharper where there's a defined separation between two surfaces (as you can see on the snout) and softer where the transition between one surface and another isn't that abrupt (like on the neck).
6 - CrunchyCromch . Another style that, like Pone-Dancer's, is capable of giving horses that extra cuteness-factor. Rounded snout, puffy cheeks, seamless shading (which I couldn't quite recreate, so go check it out in her gallery!) and big, pointy, fluffy ears. Her eyes don't always look like this, as it seems to me that she likes to experiment with different techniques, that are always really pleasant to look at, but I picked this because I found it particularly interesting. It's a style she experimented in one of her OC's Arctic's drawings. Her expressions are also really good, so I chose to give Stendhal something more than a mere bored/calm look in this case and made him look surprised.
7 - mlp-melodymark . What I really like about her style is the way she draws manes, with curls and swirls that make them look super consistent and material! There is, in particular, this one style where she also includes a few stray hairs, a really original idea, so I decided to go for that. I didn't have a reference for Stendhal's beard, so I based myself on one of the ways she draws her ponies' cheeks (which is via those rounded tufts you can see there) and I used the same type of tufts for the beard. I think it came out pretty good.
8 - AquaPegasus . Her style is super cute, bright, glittery and cartoony, which makes her characters some of the happiest, most cheerful looking ones I've seen! The big round eyes, the short pointy snout, the fur covered ears are all typical features of it. The way she does her manes is very interesting, because it combines solid lines with a softer shading and the effect is really cool: it really gives the idea the mane is formed by big tufts of hair, each of which is also formed by a lot of thinner hairs. In my opinion, a really nice way to harmonize the way manes are made in the MLP regular show and realistic horse manes. Also, she has a really unique way of drawing the iris, with a sort of "double highlighting": one is the main reflex/shadow, the other is a lot of smaller individual highlights that you can see if you zoom in. Though I wasn't quite able to pull that off correctly so... go see her drawings!
9 - Lastly, my style. Not much to see, just my good old Stendhal, in his good old fashioned look.
I hope you like this experiment! Let me know what you think and if you would like to see some more, with other artists' styles.
Stendhal: "...can I move now?"
No.

Disclaimers
Did you manage to include all artist that inspire you?
Absolutely not. There's so many talented artists I would have loved to include, but I just couldn't, either for issues with time (it took me weeks to just draw these: you need to analyse a person's artworks to try and pinpoint their essential features, look at how they do shading/highlighting, find references, try to imagine how your character would look in a certain style...) or with the style itself: I'm not an exceptional artist and I think it's important to recognize your own limits; for some styles, although beautiful, I felt like I wasn't skilled enough to recreate them properly, so I preferred to stick to those I knew I could somewhat mimick. Don't feel bad if I didn't include yours! I might do another one of these soon and I might accept suggestions. ^^
Were you able to recreate these people's styles perfectly?
Definitely not. I am satisfied with them, but every artist's style is unique and the only person capable of getting the most out of that style is the artist themself. What I drew here is not an exact copy of an original style, it's still my interpretation to a certain extent. Therefore, I strongly recommend you to check out the artists I featured, because they are all super talented! If you liked these portaits, believe me, you'll like the ones they do even more.
Do you have these people's permission to draw in their style?
Yes. Each artist was contacted individually and asked for their permission to be included in the project. The only exception was Pone-Dancer, because if I remember correctly I promised I'd do one of these challenges and include her when she posted her original challenge. And it's also a way to reciprocate the honor of having my OC drawn in her style.
Why does Stendhal never smile? And what happened to his glasses?
Stendhal isn't smiling because he had to model for me while I created each of these portraits and he gets bored easily. XD As for the glasses, he took them off after the second portrait and then put them back before the last one. Logic 100. >w<

Wow! You've done very well in this. For me, personally it's pretty difficult to start drawing in different style. Great job! ^^

Aw, thank you so much! It means a lot
You can try this challenge if you want, it's a lot of fun! ^^ I usually do this: I look at 5 or 6 drawings from an artist and I write down something that I find typical about their style. I find it easier to recreate a person's style if I know exactly what makes that style unique

Thank you so much, Omni! I loved doing this, working with other people's styles can be super entertaining and it teaches you a lot: feel free to give this challenge a try if you want!
And yeah, I really wanted to say something about each style, to let those artists know what their style taught me when I observed it X3
Thanks again for your kind comment!

AAAAAAAAAY THERE IT IS
GODDAMNIT IT'S LIKE IT WAS DRAWN BY ME!!
Now I think I know which drawings you've referenced xD They're almost exact duplicates, really! I can also imagine that my shading style was hard to get because it's just such a mess of a process overall xD But you certainly did great on that too. I especially appreciate the eyes.
And aaaa you did absolutely perfectly on Celly's, Lizzy's, Tony's and Swirls's style!! The rest are absolutely gorgeous too, but these four are more familiar to me. Like come on, if Tony was to publish that second drawing, I wouldn't even tell that it was actually done by you! Which makes me think that you'll be great at making comics. Really. Give it a try if you want to.
Thank you so much for including my style here! <33

AAAAAA thank you so muccchhhh! I'm so, so happy you think it looks accurate!
And yeah, there's a specific drawing I used more than others as a reference
It's the one from New Year's, with Bert and Mapricorn's Eddie wrapped up in Xmas lights. Your shading style might be a messy process, but it pays off super well in the end ;3 I never thought I could recreate all stages of it perfectly, so I just tried to make it look similar at least in the areas you usually shade, although you do it better X3 The eyes just had to be faithful, because you have a unique way of making them, pupils and eyebrows included!
And I'm so happy you think I did well on other people's styles too QuQ And oh, you think so? Well, I actually always wondered how it would be to make a comic. I thought I wasn't good enough for it, but I also though I wasn't good enough to art in the first place until 2017, and yet here I am so... I might give that a try, thanks!
And don't mention it, it was my pleasure! <3

I knew xD Sadly it’s that particular character who has such eyes, but hey, that’s how I used to draw most if not all of my ponies even less than a year ago. So you definitely got it right. Yeah, it takes at least three stages, with the first one being natural shading as if it was in normal light (I mean natural angles and curves), then under actual light and then I render both and add effects. I’m weird.
I believe in you, my dude. Trust me, you’re actually way better at art than you think you are.
^^

Aah, I see! Then I did half an "oopsie" there XD But I'm glad you think I still got it somewhat right, even if I based myself on a particular character rather than the general style ^^
Hmm, I think I get it: I stop at step one, the natural shading. I need to try and experiment a bit more x3 You are not weird, you are creative!
TuT Thank youuu

Ayy, thank you so much, Audrey! So glad you think I did a good job on the styles, and especially on yours: it's very different from how I usually draw horses, like, for example I tend to make super large snouts, while yours are very small, so I was afraid I might not do too good on it
But I really tried my best and I'm glad you find it accurate
And noooo, that's not an excuse for forgetting to draw them >-> ... <-< what makes you think that XD (Honestly, 50% of times I draw Stendhal, I forget his glasses. Seriously, why did I even design him with them if I then forget them? XDD)

EbbySharp [2020-03-28 00:27:00 +0000 UTC]
Well, it's amazing that you can find what makes an artist's work unique without outright stealing from it. To me it looks kinda hard.
(btw, I'm laughing about the Mariebite and Crunchy styles; they are like two total opposites of one another! )

Thank you so much, I'm glad you think so! I was a bit scared I might "rip-off" something rather than recreating it, so I always tried to be extra careful: I didn't copy existing poses, but I tried to think, based on how they did anatomy, how each artist would have drawn a certain face. (Namely that grumpy horse Stendhal is's face XD)
And yeah, they are two very different styles Both very personal and super original, though

I have to admit that you completely nailed Mariebite's style and Strawberryheartrose's 0.o To me they're more complex to replicate, and you got it!
Eeee it's so awesome to recognize all of the different art styles here :-D All of the different shading types must've been a pain >.<
Thank you so much for including my silly little style in this 0.o I never thought the nostril thing was different until you put this up, and now I see that practically none of them have pink snout-holes! And you got my typical mane-drawing style correct as well; my manes tend to bubble upward for whatever reason XD
If you ever feel like doing something like this again, feel free to copy without contacting. It's an honor to be mimicked by you, so please don't go through the effort of asking ^.^ Thanks again!!!
Heck as soon as I get the time I'm totally trying this challenge again

Aaah, you think so? Thank you so much The different shading styles were a bit of a pain, but not to actually recreate: the real struggle was understanding exactly how each shading style was different, what made them unique. Once I could do that, once I pinpointed what to me looked like the main features, recreating them was easier
Your style isn't silly or little, it's precious and happy to look at ^.^ It was my pleasure to include it. I definitely had to include both the pink nostrils and the bubbly manes. If I ever do this again, I'd love to include your style again, maybe with a different horse as a model (Stendhal demands a break XD). Thank YOU, for allowing me to use your style and for the beautiful words
If you do it, I'd love to see it: the first one you did was super interesting. It did prompt me to do this one X3

I won't lie, it's been quite tricky I had to analyse drawings reaaaally close to see which areas were shaded in a person's style and which not XD But with a bit of determination, I'm sure you too could pull it off ^^

I wanted to include the colored outlines because I see them as a specific feature of your art style, your digital one in particular: most people use black outlines, or if they don't like dark outlines they often try to go full-lineless, so your choice is definitely original and one that I personally like.
Thanks again!
