I think I can explain.
You see, that was a game in the 90s, called "le puit" (the well) in french.
It's basically a stupid joke where a guy had to make an O or a well with his fingers, and had to make you look at it under your shoulder. If you were to fall for this "trap", the guy could make a cross on your shoulder and hit on it, and after that he had to "clean" it.
If he were to forgot the last part, you had the right to hit him in the face.
I have no idea how, but apparently in France, every college knew that game, even though there was no internet yet.
