Description

For my first batch of Mu inhabitants I decided to bring some invertebrates since they are usually just “background” elements that in reality can be most of the biomass of some ecosystems.  These are not pretentious submissions, but a way to make the island feel more alive (even though they can become main characters in the future of Mu.

The Mu’s land snail (Achatinomimus insularis) is a large (average shell length reaches 10cm) terrestrial Stylommatophora gastropods that can be found in Mu’s wet and forested ecosystems. These snails are versatile creatures that feed on any kind of organic matter according to the environment it lives, from fungi and moss on tree barks to small invertebrates and rotten meat. Mu’s land snails are hermaphrodites and very prolific, being able to produce more than 3.000 eggs per year.

In the eastern forests, the ginkgos are one of the most common trees and the ginkgo butterfly (Olga ginkgophaga) is a primitive Nymphalidae lepidopteran that feeds almost exclusively on those trees. These butterflies also act as pollinators of some Lauraceae and Magnoliaceae alongside beetles and cockroaches. There is a small documented population on northwestern portion of Mu associated with smaller Ginkgoaceae shrubs.

The green carabid (Dromopterus viridis) is a predatory beetle often found in coastal areas and drier environments such as the southwestern desert and the northwestern shrubland. Being active hunters in both larval and adult stages, these beetles are able to prey on any invertebrate unlucky enough to cross its path. Some cases of carrion feeding in coastal areas were documented.
