They are surprisingly popular, but I have a feeling that the massive backlash against the "Fire the quacker and take his crap off the shelves" attempt was more of a slap at the tactic of "say or do anything we don't like and your ass goes down." than support for the quacker or his words.
A lot of the middle is just really, really tired of the screeching from both far sides of the political pendulum.
So I don't come across as disingenuous, I'll state that I signed the petition keeping the quacker on the air and his stuff in cracker barrel shelves and didn't support the chick-fil-a boycott either.
Both were massive defeats for GLAAD, not because of haters in my opinion, but because so many people are tired of being screeched at by either side.
And I'm pro gay marriage.

Freedom of speech is, obviously, the most important
one, and the ACLU is right that if any kind of speech
is threatened then all kinds are. That's what I like
about Phelps: everybody hates the guy but he can
keep saying that crazy stuff he says. As monstrous
as his intentions are, he is a sterling example of our
freedom of speech.
And I say "god bless" to these folks because I know
none of them would want to hear it from me
It's good to take the sober moderate view like you
do, I know somebody has to. Extremes beget extremes
and that can ultimately be destructive.

Eventually, there will have to be agreement. Gay marriage will no doubt become (at least in the US) universal, but many states will pass laws like Phelps wanted (one might note that the Kansas senate has backed off the bill), but hopefully in a fashion that protects everyone's rights as much as possible and no one's completely.
It's likely that once the smoke clears, no one will be happy. Many gays will be angry they got tolerance rather than acceptance, many religious and/or right-wing folk will be angry that tolerance was codified.
But a lot of people's lives will be a little better and no ones religeous views or even personal distastes will have been outlawed.
At least that's the hope.
And it just makes sense, supporting what is right is easier than fighting what is not. Honestly, I'd much rather marriage become a church/religious thing and the state drop marriage altogether for civil unions. Then those who feel marriage is a sacred sacrament between a man and a woman could still have their way and the rest of us could have ours.
Families are so much more than straights or gays make them out to be.
