Description
A new version of the Akula-class escort, in the form of ENS Cwn Annwn (pronounced 'Koonannun'), which we will be seeing more of soon in the Diaspora Series. This is a big image - view full size or download for the best view.
Sleek and deadly, the 596-metre Akula-class escort excels in both the fleet escort and frigate roles. Armed with a pair of 600 mm cyclonic accelerator batteries amidships and able to lay down a respectable kinetic broadside as a result, they are a common sight in the Alliance's peripheral systems, often deployed on loner missions where they are not expected to encounter threat force ships with cyclonics of their own. The main armament is supplemented with a pair of old-fashioned linear keelguns and 50 Athene multi-vector missiles, giving the Akula-class a respectable long-range strike capacity which is further enhanced by ten embarked small craft, including up to eight gunboats and one or two pinnaces. These assets combined give an Akula the ability to dominate a (small) solar system on her own if required.
Most often encountered in anti-piracy deployments, the Akula is a commensurate hunter-killer, with enough engine and staying power to close with or avoid any foe. As with most escort-sized vessels, the vast majority of the area-defence assets cover the fore aspect. Combined with its compact fore/aft profile, this allows the Akula to charge opponents with her keelguns before shelling them into oblivion with her cruiser-calibre cyclonic accelerators. Despite their firepower, however, Akulas, like all escorts, are unable to withstand sustained formation combat, particularly with larger vessels. Favoured by the Admiralty as frontier ships and pirate hunters, an Akula-class escort is an ideal platform for a keen young Starship Commander to fish in the shark-infested waters of the Armward Fringe and Alulan Traverse.

Another piece of beautiful work.
You seem to be pumping these out at a much faster rate these days, is the workload lightening up?
