Description Spiderman creator Steve Ditko created this gritty hard boiled character back in 67 for Charlton. The character is notable for being considered one of the darkest and most grim of the silver age.  The character was later acquired by DC comics where he's managed to show up perennially in a number of places. There was a lengthy run by Denny O'Neil and Dennis Cowans, he's appeared JL and other cartoons too. This character was also the basis for Rorschach from the book and movie "The Watchmen"
M4 as the Question and Genesis as Mr. Badwrench. The set is Stonemason's Dark Places: Back Alley with a streetlamp and background building from Predatron's City Streets. Predatron also made M4 business suit whose jacket was used here. The hat is from Digger James for M3. Big Sweater for Freak 5 and dynamic jeans for M4 also used. Duke Hair and Aiden skin and eyes textures used. Question's overcoat and pants made in Hexagon and clothified in Poser 6. Mask also made in Hexagon. What else? Oh... wrench from Tools and Toolbox and some help from Ron's smoke, grime, stains and splashes.

This is really great! Nice work.
I'm just learning to use Hexagon but I've wanted to make a mask for ages!

Thanks! Enjoy Hexagon! It's got it's quirks but it's a good modeler Yes! Making a mask was one of my reasons for picking up Hex to begin with. There's some good tutorials for it on Youtube too.

This is a fantastic illustration, Lance.  The huge villain has lots of great detail and looks super menacing.  The Question appears a bit too well lit and clean in comparison.  I might like to see the smoke obscure a bit of the villain as well to tie the two characters together.  Fine job!  RICK

Thank you very much, Rick! I strongly suspect you are right in terms of creating a strong illustration but I am at least equal part fan-geek to illlustrator. I was attempting to pay some tribute to original creator Ditko as well. The Question was Ditko finally getting a chance to express his love of Ayn Rand's Objectivism thru a character. His visual expressions of clean and well lit vs. dirty and dark as strong opposing points seemed a part of that style (I was attempting).

Much appreciated, Rick I made a few technical breakthroughs for myself on this one. Ditko always makes for good inspiration. Really, the clean and light equals good and dark and dirty equals evil was more part of Mr. A's visual style than the Question's, the characters were very similar, another plain clothes mouthpiece for Objectivism.

Thanks Maestro! I'm most pleased you loved the look of my villain... you know, my friend, when your hero has the blankest of expressions, you got to try to make up the difference somewhere

Well done Lance!  I remember this character very well.  And in the movie, "The Watchmen" I can't stand the actor that plays the part LOL, I actually met him as a teen, he was at a party across the street from my house.   But anyway, great job on the scene and characters!

Vee! Thanks! Cool! I'm glad you were familiar with the character and liked it anyways! So you can't stand Jackie Earl even after having met him, huh? He must've left quite an impression. Actually this character has been down a number of crazy paths under the direction of different writers and artists. While researching this, I came across Rick Veitch's 2005 Question mini-series (I didn't know about) in which the gas which adheres his mask causes him to hallucinate so he's this tripped out warrior shaman. The pages I read online were a great deal of fun. I really may have to pick those up. Check some of it here: scans-daily.dreamwidth.org/360…

LOL yeah, this is true.  At the time he was just a punk kid in the movie Bad News Bears, and while he may have grown up from that time, he was still just a cocky kid actor that thought he was better than everyone else.  I agree though he has been on a crazy strange journey as an actor and for him to wind up as the character on that particular movie was super creepy to me LOL.

At any rate, keep up the great work, I always look forward to your wonderful designs.

Thanks again! OMG, you say the nicest things! I apologize in that I know I can (at times) jump around from subject to subject without warning when I talk or type... actually, the Question was the character I was referring to although I suspect Jackie Earl's journey as an actor has been equally as crazy and strange. It's funny, I do feel like I could easily picture him as being snotty & arrogant as a teen.

Thanks Delia. Usually expression is one of my main tools for expressing character and story so I wasn't so sure how well I could do that with a faceless man. Glad to hear you liked it.

Well, heck... thanks for that too! Actually, I think I was sort of using it to force me out of my comfort zones to work harder in other areas and  it may have worked in that aspect as I think tried at least a little harder in the modeling, texturing and lighting aspects.
