The queen's voracious appetite is a part of her "Becoming". The constant intake allows her body to feed upon itself as some parts are absorbed and others are created. The process seems chaotic but is in fact ordered as are all things in the Alien lifecycle.

The order of survival.

Initially the still developing "Comb", the means to mentally control her troops when they are beyond her scent. Then the tail for balance and speed as well as defense. Next, the ultimate necessity for continued survival, the ability to reproduce.

For the new brood shall be brought forth.
