Description Here's a fellow who doesn't get quite enough love. He's also one of my favorites. So I did art! Also, I wrote something. , this is for you, hun. Since we've agreed to a fanfic share, I figured I'd take your lead and post something. Critique on writing and art are both appreciated!

"Yo. Gin."

A young man in a black trainer raised his arm in casual greeting. His wild brown hair lay in a mass of greased spikes against his neck, and something in the way he walked suggested a hungry coyote. Gin knew him as Tadashi Nikaido, unfortunate younger brother of an old friend. Much of the rest of Tokyo knew him as the brash local leader of the Shibuya Deamons.

Which was why it was something of a novelty to see him accompanied by a businessman, dressed in a dove grey suit, with a bluetooth receiver in his ear. Gin, for a moment, could do nothing but stare.

The young man and his companion noticed the demon standing behind Gin's bar in the next breath. Both stopped in their tracks. Horror seized Gin's stomach in cold fingers, until Nikaido's grin returned. "Well," he scoffed. "Here I thought to come share somethin' like news. But you're way ahead of me, ain't you." He waltzed past Gin and leaned against the bar, sneering up at Take-Mikazuchi before bravely turning his back on the creature. "When'd you summon him?"

Gin, confused and unsettled, frowned. "Hello to you too, Kaido. You have something to say?"

Kaido sneered. He took a rectangular device out of the front of his trainer, and laid it heavily on the bar. Gin should not have been surprised to recognize it as a COMP, like the one secured safely in his own pocket, but he was.

"Where did you get that?" Gin asked, storm clouds gathering in his voice.

Kaido held up his hands defensively. "Chill, man. My boys been doing some creepin' around since the start o' the lockdown. They got this from a fellow in orange robes." He held the COMP up. "Now, I might be mistaken, but I thought you said you'd seen guys like that snoopin' around Haru's place some days, eh? Thought you might wanna know what they'd been up to." He made a dry sound that could have been laughter, but was rather too sarcastic.

Gin took this revelation with weary silence. "The Shomonkai," he observed.

"Yes, sir." Kaido pushed himself off the bar and came up close by Gin's side. The businessman had, so far, remained eerily quiet, like a ghost. "Listen, Gin, my man. You're a well connected kinda fellow. Like me. More importantly, you're not stupid. I'm sure you've noticed the barriers the Self Defense Forces have put up. Think about that a second; does that make any sense to you?"

Gin leveled Kaido with suspicious eyes. This was a change of subject that he did not like. "What are you trying to get at?"

"Of course not," Kaido continued, as if Gin hadn’t said anything at all. "Hear me out; the electricity downtown is blown. So it's not that hard to think that the trains wouldn't be running, either. The average guy plays along with it. So why bother to put up armed guards?"

"I thought it was a gas leak," Gin said, the words tentative. "It's for our own safety." He wasn't quite sure if he believed that himself all of a sudden. Kaido pounced on his indecision.

"Through the whole line? All stations? We're talkin' some twenty one square miles of track. One helluva gas leak, you ask me."

Gin frowned. He, contrary to the young gang leader, had never thought Kaido particularly intelligent. But this made a lot of sense, all of a sudden. "Where are you going with all this?" he asked, although he had a feeling he already knew.

Kaido grinned. "Think about it. The power's out. Cell phone reception is dead. Tokyo's been returned to the fucking Edo period. Sure, they can explain the lockdown, maybe. But what about the blackouts? What about service? Downtown fucking Shibuya, and I can't connect. That takes work." He went back into the bar and held up his COMP again. "And, to put icing on the cake? Demons. There are demons in Tokyo, and me and you are part of the revolution."

Also, none of these characters are mine. This work is purely a tribute to the awesome guys at Atlus who know how to write a good story. Thanks!

Pazuzu is such weak sauce though. I was incredulous at the results of the fight between Keisuke and Kaido if you fail to save Keisuke since Yama should be able to crush Pazuzu.

You know, you DO have a point. Pazuzu is what, 32? And Yama is 45? Something like that? I think they level Pazuzu up for that fight, but I dunno. I should know, cause I just did it, but I've stopped paying attention to levels. Lv 75 Ananta pretty with multi-hit wastes pretty much everything, so I don't even notice XD;;

That's the normal Pazuzu, but, Kaido's Pazuzu is FAR more stronger that the one you can summon, why? Kaido grind like crazy killing demons while Keisuke grind... killing humans (far less exp)

Especially the arcade version since the arrows are at the corners, making it a farther reach. The keyboard version is harder for me cause I trip on myself so easy. xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leunbrund In reply to ShiningCookie [2012-05-30 03:48:36 +0000 UTC]

He was the easier one to betray, for me. I always got the impression he was kinda...hmm. I love him to death, I really, REALLY do. But he's the nerd that plays Halo and teabags his enemies, you know what I mean? He's just such a DICK, to pull you into the lockdown like he did, and I ADORE him, but that's a low blow.

However, I do think that Naoya's route is the most dramatic ending. It gave me chills of the best sort. And Atsuro looks so crushed, at the end, like you betrayed HIM. That to me feels worse than betraying Naoya, who sort of asked for it anyway. Even though he is one of my favorite characters.

God, I love this game so much, it's dumb.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShiningCookie In reply to Leunbrund [2012-05-30 04:12:03 +0000 UTC]

Don't play Halo, so the metaphor's a bit lost on me. xD

-shrugg- Guess we have different opinions on Naoya. I see it more as he pulls you into the lockdown, yes, but only because he believes you're strong enough to withstand it. And then he gives you the tools to deal with it anyhow. Plus, the lockdown was engineered in response to the Shomonkai's actions, albeit helped along by Naoya. He's using you for his own gains, definitely, but his revenge has the side effect of benefiting humanity.

On that, it helps that I sympathize with his cause; the hypocrisy of the angels makes me want to, well, never side with them for starters. xD Even thinking of siding with them makes me feel like I'm betraying humanity. And although Amane redeemed herself in Naoya's Warlord ending in Overclocked, her character's still pretty bland/pathetic/annoying enough to the point where I completed Yuzu's ending before hers.

Atsuro's my second favorite character after Naoya for his very incredible loyalty. And he's funny.

And yes, I love this game too. <3 Have you played Devil Survivor 2? Yamato, though I adore his character, is a lot more of a jerk than Naoya ever was. xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leunbrund In reply to ShiningCookie [2012-05-30 19:03:29 +0000 UTC]

See, and I LIKED Amane, even though her naivete has kind of worn thin on me over the years. I feel like she's doing what she believes is right, but I also happen to think that she doesn't quite get the big picture.

It's true, the Shomonkai's actions started the lockdown, but if Naoya hadn't pulled you in, and used you, then the life of you and your friends never would have been in danger. Besides which, he's about as hypocritical as God, pretending to give you a choice in how you resolve the lockdown, but forcing the trial on you all the same. He and YWHA aren't too different in that regard. There's something of a secret with him that you may know already, but I THINK only really comes to light in the Messiah ending.

Atsuro is hilarious. The writers did great work in making sure that Devil Survivor didn't end up like the Hunger Games, where it was terror from one end to the other. I think one of the reasons this story works so well no matter what path you choose is the humor that crops up to balance out the horror. Usually it's Atsuro, but some interactions between Protag and Haru make me chuckle, too. Mostly because she blatantly hits on you in the beginning. Like, dude. He's a minor. O___O

I haven't played the second one! Neither have I played Overclocked, mostly because as much as I adored the first game, I don't have the money to spend on a reboot, and besides which I have such a strong image of the character voices in my head already, the voice acting doesn't attract me? Kind of how I didn't much like the Harry Potter movies, because they tried to change the way I was seeing a lot of it when I read the books.

What is the premise for DS2? Again, it looked so similar to the first game, and I'm such a diehard, I didn't bother. What's the story?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShiningCookie In reply to Leunbrund [2012-05-30 20:00:54 +0000 UTC]

Amane was just too plain for me to like, and I've never been fond of the overdone devout character archetype. I feel like having to interact with her would make the whole experience incredibly boring. I didn't really appreciate having to listen to Remiel's sermons either.

Well, I don't know much about Japanese culture, but it's Tokyo - would it not be fair to say that you might have been there anyways? Without Naoya, you wouldn't have the means to withstand the lockdown. Plus, if you weren't there, a lot of pretty bad scenarios could have arisen; lockdown failed and demons get out, final option enacted and a lot of innocent people die, angels take over, etc. Though I concede that I can say this because I'm looking at the big picture, I know that the protagonist and his friends survive no matter what, and I am not actually in the scenario - if my cousin forced me into that kind of situation, I would have been pretty peeved at him.

Does Naoya pretend to give you a choice? I recall him being very upfront about wanting you to become King of Bel, and in Atsuro's path you have to fight him in order to get him to cooperate. I've heard the Messiah ending completes Naoya's character, so I should play it for that, but...I just feel so meh about it. Which characters stick with you in that ending?

Haha, Hunger Games was indeed terror from one end to the other, with unfortunately some very tedious Twilight moments in between. Wiki says Haru's 20 and he's 17 - not too much of an age difference there, although yeah he's still a minor. XD Otaku-ro is indeed hilarious, particularly in his sparkly-eyes face~ Humor can really develop a storyline. Part of what made SMT: Strange Journey so dull for me was the complete and utter lack of humor.

Oh erm, I am very horrible at describing things. Derp, in essence you register to a website that tells you when your friends will die. I personally didn't find it similar to DS1 at all. I thought DS2's plot was weaker, but what I liked better about DS2 was that it had more characters, and you get to interact with them a lot more.

I liked Overclocked for the expanded story, though I've only finished one ending - Naoya's path in which you don't kill. I was pleased with the voices, except for Midori's. Ugh. I know what you mean, though, about the Harry Potter thing. I don't know why this bugs me so, but it really annoys me that the Patil twins are both in Gryffindor in the movies. =.=

...and thus does our conversations get longer and longer. xD;;

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leunbrund In reply to ShiningCookie [2012-05-31 18:33:32 +0000 UTC]

Hahahah! xD That's how you know it's a good conversation.

I thought it was that you lived in the suburbs outside the lockdown? And you were only in the area to see your cousin? Naoya, like God, has his hopes for you; that you become the King of Bel and fight God, etc, etc. But doesn't he help you escape, in Yuzu's route? And he does agree to help you in Atsuro's route, once you prove yourselves. If he wanted you to become the King of Bel and didn't want to give you free choice, he would have tried to stop you in any route but his own, don't you think?

Hmm, let's see. In Amane's route, you get Yuzu, Atsuro, Mari (if you save her), Keisuke (if he's alive), Midori (if you agreed to take her, which I don't understand why you would. Great character. Obnoxious piece of poop), annnnd Amane herself (she's equal to Naoya as a caster. You may not like her as a character, but as a unit, she rocks pretty hard, provided you can deal with her short movement speed).

The only two routes I haven't actively finished in game are Atsuro's and Yuzu's, perhaps ironic given that they're your first party members! With Yuzu, I just haven't had the heart to fail that badly. And I'm trying to write a fanfic (for personal consumption, it's just a retelling) so recent play-throughs have gone fairly slowly. Taking some copious notes.

I'm really torn between Naoya's ending, and perhaps Atsuro's, once I play it. As much as Amane's route was the one I took first, I think Naoya's makes for the best story. The ultimate result of Amane's and Naoya's routes are virtually the same, just that in one, you become a king beholden to yourself, and in the other, you become a king beholden to God (which was the ONE part I actually didn't agree with).

ShiningCookie In reply to Leunbrund [2012-06-02 18:57:25 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's a different culture...Japan's public transportation is definitely better than America's, so it's easier to go to the city for shopping, school, etc. My cousin in China will do that - take a train to Hong Kong for shopping, and be back home within a day. America is pretty unique in the living-in-suburbs phenomenon when most of the other countries focus on the cities. Atsuro and Yuzu seemed to know the area very well too, which implies that they've been in Tokyo a lot. So, uh, I'm trying to say that while they were called into Tokyo by Naoya that day, there's a decent chance they might have been in the lockdown zone anyhow. If I recall correctly, it was their summer, so they'd have plenty of free time to go out.

Naoya's kind of forced to help you in Atsuro's route. xD To be honest, I don't remember whether or not he appears in Yuzu's route, though... But going with what you're saying, he's not pretending to give you free choice - he actually is giving you that choice, isn't he?

I read Keisuke as "Kaido" and had a brief mind blown moment. xD Haha, I read a comment a while back darning Yuzu's breasts for slowing her down and lowering her movement to three.

Oh derp, since it seemed like you really like Atsuro, I thought you had finished his ending! My bad if I said anything spoilery. ; Yuzu's playthrough is...yeah, much simpler than the other's. I found the ending itself pretty interesting though. Naoya's ending definitely gave me the most satisfaction upon completion (I had that sort of bouncing off the walls endorphin rush) - although I did enjoy Atusro's ingenuity in his ending. Naoya for the demons and Amane for the angels - and Atsuro for humanity! Ah, I really think you'd enjoy the expanded stories on Overclocked...okay, okay, I'll shut up about that now. > A lot of what repels me from Amane's ending is I don't much care for the king of demons bowing his head to God to give said God more power...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leunbrund In reply to ShiningCookie [2012-06-02 20:44:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that was the kicker. I liked the King of Bel deal. But bowing your head to God...? That was what spoiled the ending for me in the end. I liked her playthrough, but the ending seemed, much like Amane herself, a little self righteous and naive. There's also the issue of 'ruling as God's will on earth', you know? Sort of...there was a trace of creepy to that, somehow. Besides which you betray the demons. I don't know why that bothers me, but it does.

Don't worry about spoilers xD Usually I am a stickler about that, but I went looking for how many endings there were a while back, and happened to find it. So no harm done. I'm a little surprised, too, haha. When I found out he had a route, I was halfway through Naoya's, and then took Gin's by force of whim on run through four (completed Amane's twice). So Atsuro's is next, but it's taking me forever, haha.

Also, about Yuzu. Yes. Yes I agree. It must. Girl must have such awful back pain. I love Yasuda-san's character artwork, except for his fingers, and his boobs. I hear there's a character in DS2 that's even bustier? Not sure how that's possible.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShiningCookie In reply to Leunbrund [2012-06-06 02:08:39 +0000 UTC]

Gosh, I hope to death that was the last Anatomy final I ever have to take. x__x

Yeah, I value independence, so that path seemed a bit too mindless-slave to me. I love the demons; sure they try to kill you, but any weapon really is dangerous in the wrong hands. They honor their contracts, so there must be some code they follow. I liked how Devil Survivor didn't differentiate between the angels and demons for fusion purposes.

Haha, gotcha. My friend got spoiled about Half-Blood Prince's ending, and she was mightily peeved 'bout that. xD

My first run through I was feeling lazy and so decided to bring on Keisuke without defeating him first. Turns out that means you can't recruit Kaido...which in turn meant I couldn't take Naoya's path, which is the one I really wanted to do (well, at least I got to see some hilarious conversations between Kaido and Midori xD). So yeah, went through Gin's route my first time. I like both Gin and Haru, but I think their ending is the dullest out of all of them. After was Naoya, then Atsuro, then Yuzu, then Naoya again on Overclocked. <3

XD Indeed, poor dear. When keeping that in mind, her wanting to run away is almost justified - all that aimless wandering must have been particularly tough on her. Yasuda does has some difficulties drawing normal boobs. I looked at the character art again, and you're right - the hands are funky too. Though we have official data on character heights, we are still lacking in measurements data - but I think there's actually two characters that have larger chests than Yuzu's. xD They both have four movement, though. Must have very diligently done some back workouts back in the day.

(How do you think you did? I hope you passed!!)

You know, that is the biggest puzzle to me. How on earth does Kaido tolerate Midori!! xD He has a habit of strange friendships, that one. It's one of the things I can appreciate about him, that while he's a power hungry sort of fellow, he's still a good guy, deep down. Adds real character. I know if it were me, I would have stabbed Midori's eyes out with a fork. She gets more irritating with every game I play.

Yuzu's also a coward. I wondered if maybe that wasn't why she was given such small movement range; she just takes longer to get up and go than everyone else.

I have also noticed that her boobs grow or shrink depending on how she's feeling. They look normal when she's mad, but get bigger when she's scared. I don't know why they did that, to fake an angle or something, or if it was even on purpose, but it's bizarre. 0.0

ShiningCookie In reply to Leunbrund [2012-06-08 21:50:58 +0000 UTC]

(Thanks! I think I did just enough to get an A )

Kaido does indeed have a wide variety of allies - Honda, Mari, Midori, and Naoya! xD I love how he's not just the typical punk character. Despite him wanting to kill quite a lot of people, he tolerates all sorts.

Ugh, Midori. It's too bad you can't just smack her head with a pan or something and knock her out. Having her best interests at heart, of course, this would then prevent her from running around to get herself killed, and then Keisuke wouldn't go wacko on you.

Googled Yuzu, and it's apparently a Japanese lemon. Wonder if that's some sort of symbolic significance. xD Guess Yuzu has to fix her hair and makeup before she dare walks, apparently. Hmm, perhaps her boobs inflate as a sort of self-defensive mechanism when she's scared. Like porcupines and their quills. And then when she's mad, they deflate so as to not get in the way when she wants to slap someone.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leunbrund In reply to ShiningCookie [2012-06-11 21:44:37 +0000 UTC]

...That would be a very bizarre defense mechanism. But she can be pretty bizarre sometimes, so I suppose it comes in handy.

I shamelessly ship her and Yuzu together. By which I mean, he totally crushes on her. I have heard rumour that, as of Overclocked, it is canon and I'm not making things up. You played it, is it true?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShiningCookie In reply to Leunbrund [2012-06-11 23:06:06 +0000 UTC]

I assume you're talking about Atsuro? He's pretty depressed in Naoya's route until Yuzu joins up in the nonkilling path, in which he then becomes really cheerful. From what I've seen, Atsuro is crushing on Yuzu who is crushing on the Hero. And then Naoya makes fun of Atsuro's crush. xD

Leunbrund In reply to ShiningCookie [2012-06-11 23:16:31 +0000 UTC]

Whoops, thanks for reading through my typo. Yes XD I mean Atsuro!

And AWWW Naoya makes fun of him? What does he say! I must know!

That's the impression I get, too. Wouldn't be a game about high schoolers without a love triangle. I think Hero can do a lot better. I ship him with Haru these days, although that hasn't always been the case.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShiningCookie In reply to Leunbrund [2012-06-13 16:58:21 +0000 UTC]

Haha. xD Hmm well basically, Hero goes off to fight God, and Yuzu and Atsuro are hanging out when they receive a message from Naoya. Naoya says the battle is going well, and the Hero will return home shortly. Yuzu is ecstatic. Naoya then goes on to say that the Hero's return means Atsuro's dream will end soon - "too bad!" Yuzu's all "what did he mean?" while Atsuro gets flustered - "Naaaaoyaaaaaaaaaa!"

Naoya's also the one to point out that Atsuro is in much better spirits when Yuzu joins. xD

Haha, thankfully with better writing than the typical love triangle. My favorite ship would be KaidoMari~ Haru and the Hero is pretty funny, with Haru's offhand flirting. What did you ship before?

You're going to puke, it was with Amane. Looking back I have no idea how that would have worked. I was a dipshit freshman, I try not to remember what that was like.

Aww, thanks for taking the time to read it, hahah! Wasn't sure if people would.

One thing about Kaido I never understood? How he could make a jogging outfit somehow intimidating. Might be all the black.

Thanks~ OwO
