Description Gnomes, intelligent, inventive, inquisitive and absent minded. I love these little geniuses. In ancient fantasy they were depicted as miners and only somewhat tinkerers along with goblins, in more recent time, since there were literally multiple races that all seemed exactly the same (Kobold, Coblynau, Goblin, Gnome, Dwarf, etc…) who all mind underground, did a bit of tinkering, mostly had beards, were small and were associated with earth, these races, who back then could be interchanged with only minor differences, eventually took on differing traits. Gnomes evolved into the tinkerers, to a degree, along with goblins.

I think minors all over the world herd strange noises when they minded from the depths of their mines, this frightened them and they came up with all sorts of mining creatures, they eventually emulated each other and eventually within the social consciousness of many cultures they separated themselves out into different kinds of creatures.

Gnomes now don’t live under ground so much as they used to, they are still tied to the earth and seem to be distant relatives to the dwarves. They like sunlight a lot more though. I chose to keep them with white hair. No matter what age they are, all gnomes have white hair. These two in the picture are a young pair of gnomes, equivalent to what we would consider mid-twenties in human years, but they still have white hair. But that’s ok, everything else reflects their proper age. These two have normal young vibrant skin and muscles and bones, they’re not really old people. But they will be some day.

So all your gnomes have white hair, huh? That's funny, my gnomes have more variety in hair colour in comparison to their dwarven cousins. lol

......i think that glove is a little much i think..... and makes me think the fey are the dominant species in your world if they have guys who can make fire gauntlets.

Gnoms and Goblins are the most technilogically advanced races in my fantasy world. They are barely up to steam engine technology being the most advanced techonoly. b to worry, since magic is a powerful part of the world this makes technoloy and science progress much slower due to the "crutch" of magic. It's not like in 200 years they will have sky scrapers and jet airplanes and rockets, this has been slowed to a crawl and it took gnomes and goblins a long time to get to where they are now. The second vairable is the general competition of other races, they're not like us where we are the only people on the planet, there are many, MANY other races and even other creatures more powerful then them, so there is generally a "growth check" and "balance" in fantasy that doesn't exist in real life.

basically the more balanced races, like elves and some human races, can survive very effectively, especially when united. the only exception would be my Derians, who cannibalize ancient technology for their needs and also have a group of mystical super soldiers.

....that is exactly like my book really. the idfference is that there have been people able to rapidly progress to levels past our own. the problem is that progression agitates dameon kind, as they get worried what damage can be caused. mosgt sapient life progress to fast and too haphazardly. humans especially, but nto specifically.

the Tiech, a race of humans i mentioend before, created a highly advanced society with only tech and no magic. however this was their weakness as they had to defense Against magic either. for i believe magic can easily destroy any modern device without effort. you need to only sever a few wires to deactivate a nuclear missle, cause a spark ti ignite in the fuel tank of a jet, jeep, and so on. it is hard to defend agaisnt such subtle magical use.

that kinda is inspired from the inheritance books. they have it magic can kill a man in a moment by severing a single blood vessel in the brain. i have it that it only works os well and non living creatures, as living creatures of course have life energy that would make the process difficult.

I had to keep them equal in power, as far as their effects. The main reason why is because I have the Engineer class and Alchemist class and they have to seem appealing to players and not sub-par to Wizzards and Warlocks. The one difference I would express is that tech takes more time to prepair and magic is a little more easier to "conjure" up. But, as with Engineers and Alchemist, dispelling effects don't work on tech and what makes tech so hard to prepare is also what makes it protected. to disable my contraption you have to know tech, if you don't you can't diable it...unless you just hit it with a sword or fireball, but you get the general idea. We still want players to want to play Engineers and Alchemists.

true, true. mainly i meant that complex devices are always at risk. you got a gun or flamethrower, you do not have to worry about sudden magical interference. though fighting a magical creature is difficult especially if it figures out how your techno stuff works. i have things like jsut plan fire ball throwing, but i also have far more subtle magical abilities to mix it up, that require little energy and can tilt the scale if used effectively.

which does make more sense. humans may be able to live strongly in a world of fey, but the fey have too many advantages to just be overwhelmed. never liked the idea of magic being killed by tech, becuase if you think about it, technology really does not compare. anything you would need to build to make a bit of technology work, magic can make it work not only faster, but better. even more, it can greatly increase the effectiveness of technology as well. got a gun that needs gunpowder? magic can make a gun that not only does not need gunpowder, but can fire bulelts faster, harder, and more accurately.

And it's only 2 races out of many. It shouldn't throw the entire world into the modern day or steam punk style world. In all seriousness, it's still a fantasy world, it's just gnomes and goblins are really smart. Smarter than humans, dwarves and even elves.

hmm, understandable. still that is a distinct advantage over humans

It is, but their smaller, weaker and less durable so it's "generally" a racial balance. Humans aren't dumb by any means, their smart enough to survive and elves rely on magic more than gnomes and goblins. Arcs ar bigger than them both but are dumb, it's just typical role playing balancin going on.

makes perfect sense to me.

not sure if i have much of that in my rpg esque ideas. i prefer the idea that you play not as a main race of the world, but as a hidden race instead, one without a place in the world an thus make certain levels of itnereaction difficult. want to buy a axe in a dwarven town? you will have to first gain the good faith of those dwarves. want to buy some potatos from a human vilalge as part of a quest? go in anticipating that you will have to slaughter the whole town in defense in order to get thsoe tumors.

do have easier soruces of materials though. thieves and bandit towns and such, but the really good stuff is in more protective areas. basically i somewhat eliminate the thief class by making thieving a natural aspect. of course eventaully that thieving will nto be so good an idea as you gain the trust of villages.
