Then this is for you!

I am going to share some tips and suggestions that helped me when I first started out, without getting into technical details.

It might take a while to load, please be patient

Please feel free to point out any corrections/additions.

Update: I presented a live tutorial on May 7th in the #photography chatroom on dAmn, that builds upon this one. You can find the log here: [link]

Oh, and if you're shooting indoors without flash, use a tripod. Any small movement to the camera will make the picture come out blurry.

realy nice and helpfull tutorial XD and also well put together
it whould be cool if you also made a more advanced one

one thing othere thing i have to say is about the rule of thirds... i agree that it can be useful for finding compasition...
but people are alwas telling me never to do that because it makes it less interesting.
it probably mostly just depends on the subject of the photo though. in the end im still a amateur photographer and learning so if you have another point of view on this mater let me know cuz im interested XD

nice work man

#3: Taking a photograph and running it through 50 Photoshop filters does not constitute art!

Photography is supposed to have "minimal" editing. Neon glow is so over done. Oh, and I have a few questions:

1: Would red eye removal be best from an in-camera effect or during post production?
2: What's the difference between manual and program? Is everything automatic in program and then it allows you to adjust settings?

Thanks. And make sure to put in something about compression settings. My Canon camera (A590) was set to the medium quality by default.

This helped a lot. I'm just (emphasis.)JUST begining at photography, because it caught my interest while looking at it here on dA. Once I start my work(My mom says I should in the summer. But I want to get winter photographs.) I'll certainly use your tips!

Oh, thank you so much for the tutorial, you have no idea how useful it is to me!
I thought that I had to have a really good camera, like those with huge zoom and stuff (Canon, Kodak, etc). Thank God it hasn't to be like that, you just have to learn the skills!

HikaruChan4ever In reply to ??? [2008-12-01 04:37:21 +0000 UTC]

What I liked about this tutorial is that I learned some of it in my photojournalism class ions ago, and my memory was refreshed and at the same time I learned things I didn't know. This account, hikaruchan4ever has become my Anime Convention da as for some reason I made another one (which resulted in my 'hotography' da.) I have to say, a lot of what you mentioned I've been practicing and am glad to know I have good sense. Other parts I had never considered, but am willing to try and experiment. So, thanks for a lovely tutorial, I hope to be able to grow as a photographer with these new found ideas.

I am one that doesn't have a camera other than the one on my cell phone. Still, I have managed only to point and shoot, and come out with beauty. Half the time, however, the pic comes out dark/blurry, because my lens sucks.
