Description
LESSON # 1Here it is guys! Here is the first lesson I promised ya'll, written for the members of *PhotographersClub , and of course any one else who finds it helpful! (Lesson 2 hopefully coming out next month!)
This tutorial is meant to help you understand 2 of the most important mechanisms on your camera...the shutter and aperture.
Also, sorry its not written all serious like. After I wrote it I sent it off to =silber-englein for proofing, and she pointed out that my personality managed to shine through...what can I say? I'm untamable!
Credits listed in order as they appear in the tutorial:
(All pieces were deviations submitted to *PhotographersClub by our members! Also, I have received permission from each deviant to reproduce their images as a part of this tutorial.)
Aperture diagram from Wikipedia
Also, I think I caught all the typos

AWESOME. I got a new DSLR for my birthday, as I've been wanting to get more serious about photography, but I've had almost no clue about shutters and aperture. xD This tutorial's helped a TON, but now I just have to find out how to change these settings on my camera!

Ahh, thank you so much for this. Definitely helped me in understanding my lovely new camera (without all the complicated words the book gave me). I'll have to fav this for future reference.

Very well written, Especially I like the aperture picture (Since most brain mixes starting out by the reversed numbers.) One MOST impotent mechanism is left out though: the focal point distance. But maybe you can cover it in the next tutorial. You could easily fill a full tutorial with it
Then you can start out with ISO, flash and autofocus

I just started playing around with my new lovely camera, and I think this'll help me.. I just need to toy around a bit more, and read the book through 2003485093 times more - then I should be geared a bit more..
just have a question tho. I just read somewhere that you should never take photos with flash - only if its really needed.. true? (im not one of those who love the flash but out of the shots ive taken so far, only a few have been really good without flash.)

Thanks much for this tut, I'm trying to get my head around this stuff, and this has increased my understanding somewhat.
One thing I don't get is when you say wider aperture makes the foreground AND background out of focus, I don't see that in the example photos. As far as I see their focuses become different, like the foreground is in focus and the background is blurred (like the effect you get in macro shots).
Anywho, apart from that I just need to figure out what this metering business is and I'll be set.

A great way to understand the blur is to click the link at the bottom of the artist comments. =ftpaddict made an awesome series of photos illustrating it!
Anyways, glad you enjoyed it though! Volume II is on the way!

Such a great tutorial! I remember reading my first tutorial on these matters, and it got me even more confused. I also like how you've made it rather "unformal", so that you won't scare away people who are new to this

Well, my dad thought me this the day I got my first dSLR, so I've never been confused about it I was more thinking of all those who might just be new to this, and could find it all confusing ^^
However, keep those tutorials coming! Could perhaps run one on white-balance and ISO.
