I am not sure why but i really do like Mari Makigami Illustrious. I suppose art of it is her look both in, and out of, her plugsuit. That and I simply LOVED her entrance in Evangellion 2.22 where she's happily singing to herself as she powers up her Eva.

To me, it's how well she's put together mentally. Unlike Shinji, Rei and Asuka, she's not a broken doll, she's confident, smart as hell and understands/respects the EVA. When she says goodbye to 05 and talking to 02 and asking her (02's) permission and apologizing for taking her into Beast Mode, there's something wonderful about her. Then in 3.0, her loving teasing of her Princess makes me love her more, even though she knows her Princess is hung up on NERv's retarded puppy.

That's why I liked about her too. I only saw the movies You Are (Not) Alone and You Shall (not) Advance, and I really saw that Shinji had some sever daddy issues, Asuka (being probably the most stable of the bunch) was a overconfident blowhard, and Rei seemed to act like a beaten puppy. One fan of the series was mad at me for saying that, turns out Rei was her favorite character and that Rei was clone. I thought that no wonder she acted emotionally "vacant" she might have had experiences in her head, but didn't have the emotional context.
I really connected to Mari mentality because she'd be doing a lot of things I'd probably be doing to. Trying to work a couple of song lines into my start-up (like she did) and at the final end when she realized she wouldn't be too much of a help she pretty much when "OK gloves are off, I may not win but I'll go down swinging."
I'd love to see 3.0 I'm really itching to get a copy of it.

Hmm, I can't quite place the characters from this set... from the suit designs and the other one from this set I thought it might be NGE, but I don't recognise her...

Her name is Mari Makigami Illustrious, she's the pilot of Unit-08. She was introduced in the Rebuild of Evangelion movies. She's also the butt in part 2, she and Asuka have two different plugsuits in Rebuild 3.0. In this one, they're wearing their old plugsuits, and in RadioAktif, they're in their new ones.
