There is actually not as much detail rendered in the painting as the eye is tricked into believing. The texture on the stones is achieved by pressing a paint smeared sponge on the surface. The "depth" of the foliage is created by overlaying random leaf patterns of increasing lightness.
I never start with a white sheet. In fact the "ground" for this image was slate blue. The kitty is not white with blue shadows. It is blue falling out of the background with white highlights overpainted.
BTW: These images I do are entirely hand-rendered without the use of any digital manipulation.
