Description Maleficent recruits Elphaba.

What a concept!

When preparing this picture I deliberately emmulated J. Leyendecker's 1916 painting of Medb enthroned from Celtic mythology. Only after I added the raven to the composition did I realize that I had recreated much of the elements from Engres' 1811 painting "Zeus and Thetis".

If you like this picture you may like the series.

Indeed...a folk-tale populated with anthro-critters (including a blatant reuse of the Jungle Book's Kaa), in the Mauswitz version, moreover. Still fairly fun for all that.

Regarding "A Knight's Tale," the Queen-laden promos were more than enough to set off my "suction" sensors. Not that I don't enjoy the late great Freddie's musical stylings, but (a) "We Will Rock You" is grievously overused and (b) as you noted, arena rock and medieval settings just don't mesh...except, arguably, in goofy Tolkien-derived early-metal videos.

Ah, so I was off by 300 years and change. I shall have to brush up on European history at some point.

Interesting notes regarding period consistency & lack thereof...to anyone with a bit of background, this stuff must be as jarring as, say, 80's catchphrases in a WWII flick.

In the process of researching the series of fantasy novels I have written, I have studied details of costume.
Heath Ledger fan(atic)s out there will not like this, but "A Knight's Tale" was one of the WORST movies made in this decade. Grooving to Bowie in the 14th Century is not my idea of accuracy. It was excrementally BAD.

Although it is my all time favorite animated feature, I could actually do a series of pics demonstrating how each character in Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" is wearing a costume from a different century.

Lumier is dressed as a courtier out of an El Greco painting from the late 1500's. Gaston is wearing the togs of a cavalier from c. 1640! Belle's blue frock is typical for 1760. That gold gown isn't seen until the next century!
Le Fou looks like he just walked out of a Dickens novel of the 1830's. The townspeople look like they were costumed out of a studio warehouse at random.

The makers of BatB deliberately intended to evoke the vague sense of "long ago and far away" by committing this travesty, but they then identify the country of origin of the story! BatB is the ONLY Disney fairy tale in which a real country is actually NAMED! "Robinhood" doesn't count. It is a FOLK tale.

Most impressive...from the character composition to M's regal purple/black wardrobe contrast to the subtle lighting from that staff. And hey...a peek at E's cinnamon candy-cane stockings. Back in the 1700s that would've been worth a caning itself from the town elders, or so I may have read somewhere.

Incidentally, the Snow White Queen's wizened hag-guise is such a precedent for Palpatine's jowly, sneering self it's not even funny.

Malefiecent's millieau is somewhere in the 13th and 14 centuries, the so-called "High Middle Ages" when the Unicorn Tapestries on display at the MMA's Cloister's were woven. Although imprecise, "Sleeping Beauty" at least attempted to keep a coherent period look. I could rail for pages on the anachronisms in "Beauty & the Beast".

If you look at the 1939 MGM production of "The Wizard of Oz" only ONE character is dressed in the style of the period in which L. Frank Baum wrote the first book in 1900. That one is the Wicked Witch. Weird as it may seem, Elphaba is a contemporary of Anne of Green Gables. This is the leg-o-mutton sleeved, shirtwaist down to the floor look that can be sen on the Gibson Girls. Elphie is dressed in a costume appropirate for a girl going to a funeral between 1890 and 1910.

Impressive!.. It may the "apprentice" bit, but for some reason I'm thinking of the Sith situation in the Star Wars. But anyways, you got some seriously impressive art.

THANX

Yes, I am playing with the line spoken by Palpatine to Anikin Skywalker in SW Ep3. The whole bit about receiving a ring from the raven was almost an afterthought but it makes the composition more integrated and dynamic.

Well, that was the one SW episode that I've missed, but my friends say that it was the saddest part of the SW they've ever seen. Nice bit with the raven, by the way.
