Description If you like this picture it has many sisters in this gallery:

This was a produced by a simple substitutionary spell: Maleficent for Philip. Suppose that battle in the briars had come out differently? Now that's a wake-up call!
I used Disney's own style-sheet and was satisfied by how it turned out.

The title is of course:

"You Were Expecting Someone Else?"

but DA won't take a title with that many characters.

My favorite Disney "Villain". I LOVE it! My big "what if" has always been what would have happened had they just invited her in the first place?
I mean really, it was just plain rude of them.

LEXLOTHOR In reply to Timebear [2009-09-16 03:08:09 +0000 UTC]

I have always held that Maleficent is th most "un-Disney" of all the Disney characters from the classic films. It was as if a character from Narnia or Middle Earth had be transplanted in the wrong movie.

The real problem is that Maleficent was developed from the fairy tale WITHOUT a back story. There had to have been a REASON that she was excluded from court.

I have had a concept for Maleficent's BACK STORY. But I'm not just going to GIVE it away. Some day I would like Disney to PAY me for story development.

Do a word search on "Maleficent and Aurora" on DA. There was at least one M/A picture by another artist posted prior to mine.

Reg. Maleficent. She stands out as an "adult" villian in the Disney kiddie universe. She looks like a character out of Tolkein rather than Disney.

Beautiful shading! This whole thing is just amazing and love the idea- I've never thought of that before! What if she beat the prince to Sleeping Beauty? The story would never end! What a great job!!

The trickiest part is drawing golden hair over a blue background without it coming out green.

I don't know what others have thought, but (back before Shego was created) I always thought M was the hottest villianess by Disney. I've always found it strange how disney made evil people ugly...

Back to the subject, I like this piece! I was dazzled by the beauty, but was laughing at the thought of SB spazzing out. (I blame ~geekspace)

LEXLOTHOR In reply to You-Were-Snarked [2008-11-21 16:59:57 +0000 UTC]

No Disney villian has ever come close to Maleficent. She has style and gravitas. While charaters such as Cruella DeVille and Capt. Hook were objects of comedy, no one ever laughs at Maleficent. She is one of those baddies like Hannibal Lecter who steals the movie, because she has more character than the cardboard "stars". Aurora for instance is one of the least defined Disney Heroines. Prince Phillip is a two-dimensional puppet compared to Maleficent. I have toyed with the notion of writing Maleficent's back story. It would ecclipse that of Elphaba in "Wicked"! That is why I have teamed those two together in my pics such as "Rise Apprentice". Shego is also a member of the "Maleficent Seven".

You-Were-Snarked In reply to LEXLOTHOR [2008-11-21 19:53:12 +0000 UTC]

Eveytime I watch the movie, I do think Maleficent steals the show. I never cared about the other caracters. Disney (back in the day) use to make unrelatedable hero and damsels. It was the villians that always felt more human.

Although Walt put his name above every title, each animated short subject and feature film was the work of different teams of directors, designers and animators. Directing animator Marc Davis created the character of Maleficent. He also worked of Cruella DeVil in "101 Dalmations". The name was an amalgun of malice and malevolent or malicious and magnificent. The dark fairy from the original French fairytale of Sleeping Beauty was never named or well-described. Cruella on the other hand was created for the original book by Dodie Smith. Davis had less latitude for invention with her.

Kieranfoy In reply to LEXLOTHOR [2009-01-12 00:41:33 +0000 UTC]

If you want to get technical, Maleficent is a word meaning "ill-intentioned." Perfectly suited to her.

I think the evil fairy was called Carrabose in Tchaikovzky's ballet.

You-Were-Snarked In reply to LEXLOTHOR [2008-11-22 00:07:57 +0000 UTC]

I actually read the original stories of both. When it comes to the fairy tale, I thought it was weird that the prince's mother was an oger...But even in the original, I still liked the dark fairy.

It was weird how they changed Cruella so much from the original book. She was actually just a young, beautiful, spoiled, rich brat in the tale. But yet again, they had to make a big change. They wanted to make them visually look "evil". (I think, now a days, they're trying to get away from that...)

LEXLOTHOR In reply to You-Were-Snarked [2008-11-22 01:15:17 +0000 UTC]

I have not read the original "101 Dalmations" book. It sounds like Cruella was more like Veruca Salt from "Willy Wonka".

Hmmm. Well, the Princess represents power (blackmail?) and revenge (corrupt her and hurt her parents), and Maleficent loves those... so, yuh, True Love.

I've never actually though of those two as a pairing before, but now that I see this pic I really love it. This is your most awesome pic ever, you really captured the Disney magic!

LEXLOTHOR In reply to KatiraMoon [2008-08-23 06:24:27 +0000 UTC]

I could not have predicted its popularity. It has only drawn a modest number of viewers as compared to the work of other artists who have posted a lot of Disney pics. I sort of blundered into a new "slash". I have two more images of this pair in mind to join the others I have already posted.

Fruity as I may sound, I must say this: fine, fine work on Aurora's rolling gold locks. M.'s equally golden eye(s) complement 'em in an odd fashion. Speaking of which, great profile work on her again.

That said, I'd say (a) our sleeper hasn't quite shaken off whatever spell put her under, or (b) she's a far, far cooler cookie than I, since anyone popping up that close to me would get a rather spastic reaction. Or (c) this isn't that unpleasant a surprise. Kinda leaning toward (c).
