Description This is a page from my ABC Warriors story - another one crucified by the fans! Here's my Deadlock. Great fun. It's strange, there were rough edges, but there was also some insane tight details - like the scene with the priest and zombie/aliens, and the martian biomass. I was taking my brief from the early Biz black and white stuff and bringing in my own Spawn/Manthing loose, expressive inks. But hey, it's all subjective.
For what it's worth, Pat Mills LOVED it and thought I got closer to the original vibe and heart of the characters than anybody had for years, so...

Best,

L.

P.S. again, sorry for low res scans. These are pages I no longer own.

I think you drew some awesome weird monsters and creatures in that story.

People didn't like this? Madness. This is on par with Bisley's run.

damn!

shame you don't have them anymore, Liam. That bottom right panel is fiercely striking!

I like this...
But, it irritates me, as I like the ABC Warriors, I know who it is on the page and then I try to bring a name up and everything sort of peters out.
I could say it's such a good shot that I've completely forgotten the cast of ABC Warriors.

It's a real nice pic and it really leaves little wonder why characters like this have endured.

I don't know about this talk of rough edges. Maybe these people were reading a Brian Bolland comic before this one. That guys inhumanly neat.

Fantastic ink work here! Hey if you're pissing off people, you're doing at least half of it right.

Oh, Liam, I love, love, LOVE your way to use the expressive inks. How long did you take to finish this table? And how long all the story?
It's unbelievable!!!

Aw thanks man.
I can't remember how long these pages took. They were REALLY big, twice the size of the printed page, so I think they took a day and a half to two days each. Something like that!

Take care,

Liam.

It's something I picked up from Frazetta - focus the eye on the details that matter...

Why the hell were the fans unhappy with this? Are they that stupid? You're up there with my other fav ABC Warrior artists: the Biz and Kev Walker

Oh man, I've given up trying to understand, but I just think the guys who DON'T like stuff tend to be more vocal than the ones who do, and for some reason my stuff always gets a strong response one way or the other.

It's probably a good thing really!

Take care,

Liam.

ABC warriors! I loved that series man! The writer was Pat Mills, isn't it? Cool work, I like the strange fantasy/sci-fi mood!

Yup, it was Pat. Classic 2000ad fare, I LOVED drawing these guys. It was a bit of a dream come true moment for me actually.

Take care,

Liam.

You're welcome!

Your love in drawing them is something that makes those guys look great.

It did seem to get unfairly lambasted. I for one quite enjoyed them. There was a rough energy to it which I liked. Plus your take on them put me in mind of the Biz. Which is no bad thing.

Andy
