Nice cover, but I really LOVED the interiors of this issue. Pencils, inks and colours were all so in synch, and so freaking perfect. At the time it really felt like a more measured version of what Jim Lee was aiming for in his stuff. And the cheeky flirting between Reed and the doctor (and Ben and Johnny's reactions) still makes me giggle.

Fun times indeed! I hit a zeitgeist moment then that I've never been able to replicate, and it was gone all too fast. Sigh.

No way, that's just evolution. People can learn a technique and repeat it for years, even decades (like Perez or even Gibbons, god bless 'em), but to constantly redefine it, evolve it and take chances- that's the kind of art that gives the medium real credibility as an artform, I think.
Maybe I'm romanticizing the process, but as a fan and a longtime interviewer (150+) I see how risky it is, to feel obligated to always chase after a more bankable style, while feeling the burning urge to mix things up. It takes balls. Getting rich in the doing is one thing, but maintaining longevity while staying experimental is something else entirely. Trends come and go. Rolling with the punches is self-validating.

Much appreciated. Thanks for this thoughtful response - and perfectly judged too. It is, indeed, a most delicate challenge - attempting to grow as an artist within such a generally confined, oddly conservative medium. I've done the best I'm able, and am content to have been lucky enough to do that while (for the most part at least) remaining on the shelves. 26 years now! Here's to the next 26...
Very best,
Liam.

Always a favorite drawing of his face mask! I used this for the face on my leather jacket and used the fringe for his cable hair!

WAO!!! Its so great to find you here in deviant art!! This comic is one of the first comics that I buy ever, back in the 90's. This comic and x-men 4 from Jim Lee were the ones that make me want to draw and do comics.
This mini series were a great inspiration to me.
Thank you mr. Sharp.
P.D. Sorry for my english. :S

This blew my mind when I saw it on the stands! ...the second time I was overjoyed by your work was when you worked on the hulk....the cover of bruce in a streightjacket and a few of those pages with like eight zillion pannels were just amazing!

Oh man, that takes me back! Yes, I went to town on those Hulk issues - kind of inspired by Frank Miller's Dark Knight, with a bit of Bolland and Moor's Killing Joke too...
Thanks for the kind words!

I will probably burn in a special Hell for this comment...BUT,
I never really liked the Fantastic Four. For me, it was always Captain America. Still, it's a wicked sweet cover and it's kind of cool to look at it go, hey, I just got my first kiss/zit/whatever...or in my case, my first 'A' on my report card.
A nice little trip down memory lane.
