Description This is the first actual paint on canvas piece I've done for almost two years, shockingly - call myself an artist!!! The frame is steel and stands well over six feet tall, seven wide. It weighs a ton! The painting is acrylic, painted without ref (not that that matters) in about a six hour period, so it's pretty fast and loose. It's kind of my prototype man - the model for all aspects; peaceful, warlike, introspective, industrious, spiritual and sceptical. It looks like a really religious work, though I'm not religious at all.

Forgive the low res photo - REALLY doesn't do it justice. The head looks too big in the main image because of the awkward angle I was at to take the photo on the wall, but hopefully you get the idea!

Best,

L.

I was a welder and so the Frame caught my eye before the painting, but both are phenomenal. Β And I must agree with other's here who have expressed the fact that you should paint more often.Β Β

I really, really wish you'd do some more canvas work. The use of texture and other techniques are advanced beyond most artist's dreams.

Again, well done.

That's one of the coolest frames I've ever seen o_0

You've drawn muscley men so many times it hardly surprises me that you can draw one without any reference! XD

Oddly enough it does look quite religious, must be the beard and long hair and the robe thing.

Very, very, nicely done, Liam. I still have human anatomy issues.....too many years of "don't stare". It wasn't polite, or safe, at the time..... Animals are something else entirely.

no I think not using a ref does matter and makes it more incredible knowing you didnt depend on anything and this is based on imagination/memory. it looks great!

It's really interesting... you're sort of working halfway between your bolder illustration style with the heavy shadows and dark blacks, but you're definitely working in paint as well, so everything is really softly rendered with accurate values. Plus it's got that painterly texture. I really like it, and I'd like to see more of it!

Also, that frame is wicked awesome. Did you make that too?

I can dig it. Maybe it's just me, but European comic artists seem to have a lot more "art" in them than those of other countries. I can only assume it's largely a cultural difference due to the much richer history and availability of art across the pond.

I think your image captured the "prototype man" quite well.

phiq [2009-10-21 13:53:40 +0000 UTC]

I think you've really captured those "Prototype Man" qualities really well; I can see every one of them in him. Quiet pieces like this are never given enough attention (especially in the comic/fantasy art scene). I don't understand because a lot can be communicated without hyper-mega-uber dynamic poses and cheesy drama. I love the colours and his skirt thing; it gives the impression of some Old Testament badass (eg, Samson) yet looks kinda Celt berserker at the same time. He's seen a lot. Am I rambling? Haha. Nice wallpaper too.

BRILLIANT PIECE, LIAM!!!! I concur, it would be a sin if we couldn't eyeball this stuff by now, wouldn't it? lol The biggest compliment I get is when people can't tell which figures I reffed and which ones I didn't. The frame is awesome. A manly piece piece of metal if I ever saw one!

LiamRSharp In reply to JoeJusko [2009-10-22 08:49:17 +0000 UTC]

Cheers Joe! Yeah, there's great satisfaction to be had when you know you nailed the anatomy without ref. I think mine's a little more stylized than yours, not quite as accurate, but it's close enough to work I think.

Take care mate.

L.

REAL close. Our industry uses an "abriviated" and stylized anatomy as the standard so you're golden, my friend!

How could I mind? LOVE Jeff Jones, and rightly spotted. I did it without ref, but HAD just been looking at one of his books, so he was imprinted in my mind's eye... Actually maybe that counts as USING ref? LOL! I don't know...
