Description
This is the first of a series of paintings I hope to exhibit next year. This one features a distorted image of myself in the aspect of the Hulk, as I drew him back in '93 at the end of one issue. I'm about to start painting Dougie Braithwaite in the aspect of one of his Superman pieces, and Chris Weston as one of his creations. Right now I have a bunch of creators all ready to be a part of the project. The nice thing here is seeing the creators in a very human form. We're usually anonymous, and yet so much of ourselves is invested in the work we do. It's the toiling invisible creator that excites me, and that I want to show. We're all artists at heart, and that's rarely appreciated. I'd like to do my bit to change that.
Again, this is a big painting - three feet squared - painted in acrylic on canvas.
Regards,
Liam.

Your whole portfolio is freakin' amazing! Β I see influences from so many great artists: Frazetta, Wrightson, Bisley, Brom - that you've drawn from to create your own terrific style. Β Awesome stuff!Β

Thank you! I wear my influences on my sleeve - but then so does Frazetta, Bisley, Wrightson, and every artist I've ever loved.

Thank you! I'm SO bloody proud of this piece. It's on my wall at home, daring me to continue the series... but it's intimidating too, as it feels like I turned a corner here artistically. That's tough to replicate!
Very best,
Liam.

If this is where your art is taking you, I'm well impressed. Beautiful work, on so many levels. The gold is a nice touch that takes it to a completely new dimension. Well done.

Thanks man! Yeah, it was a step up for me, and that's rare. The original is very rough, and was painted incredibly quickly, making me fight the urge to go in and kind of slick it up, smooth it out - you know? The life came from the energetic execution.
Cheers for that.
Best,
Liam.

Wow - Klimt-esque to my eyes - especially in the use of the gold and the ruddy skin tones - feels very much like a take on an Old Master, even if that wasn't your intention

LiamRSharp In reply to ludd1te [2008-02-22 17:36:08 +0000 UTC]
Oh yeah, I think Klimt was there alright! It's definitely got an art nouveaux feel about it! I try to take myself out of the comics, sci-fi and fantasy realms to produce what people might see as more traditional fine art work to push myself, and hopefully understand ALL art a little better. This is one of those pieces.
Many thanks for that.
Take care,
Liam.

This just pops like no painting I've seen. I've always appreciated Fabry, Bisley and others, but never to an extent whereby I've become a fan. This is something else.
Oh, and I wouldn't mess, either.

Ha ha! I'm a complete fucking pussycat pacifist, that's the funny thing. PMy piers, it seems, used to think I was a badass at cons - but I was always standing on the sidelines wishing I was wittier so I could join in! Sean Phillips, Duncan Fegredo and a couple of other guys had me pegged as a bit of a beligerent bruiser, which is just hilarious once you know me! We're all good mates now, but that went on about a decade! Funny.
Big thanks for the compliment. It's a piece I'm very proud of. And thanks, too, for the wider interest. I'm very humbled.
Take care man.
Liam.
