Phillipines, Earth 2134 - Armstrong Center, Luna 2219
PORTRAIT OF USS SOYUZ (NCC-10) AND USS APOLLO (NCC-11) DEPARTING EARTH'S SOLAR SYSTEM ON THEIR MAIDEN VOYAGE, 11 OCTOBER 2165 CE (A FRIDAY).
Digital
2400 x 1088
Catalogue Note
One of two digital paintings commissioned by Armstrong Center (now Armstrong City) municipal authorities to commemorate the launch of the first USS Apollo, the first Federation capital ship to be captained by a citizen of Luna, and the fourth year of the Federation; while this portrait faithfully emulates the position of NCC-10 and NCC-11 in the well-known live image captured by a correspondent for THE EAGLE newscast, the artist sets these two starships in a stylised composition said to have been inspired by the mission patch for Apollo 13 (part of the earliest Human orbital missions).
One copy of this painting was gifted to USS Apollo (NCC-11) and has resided in the Howard Museum of Lunar History since 2369; the other was gifted to the USS Soyuz (NCC-10) "In friendship and solidarity between the heirs of Cape Canaveral and the heirs of Baikonur" and was passed on to her successors of that name until it came to rest on the USS Soyuz (NCC-1922), name-ship of her class, which now resides in a permanent home at the Smithsonian Orbital Annexe.
