Description
Guess who finally played Batman: Arkham Asylum? The Riddler isn't really a villain in it, is he? He gives you riddles to solve and trophies to find, and once you do, he gives you stuff.
You hear that, Joker?
Maybe, just maybe if you tried that approach with Batman and were a bit nicer, maybe he'd give you that smile?
As it was, and I played the game, Joker would be taunting me about how he's going to kill everyone, and I'd be going:
"So, I got to go there, but first, there's a Riddler shiny thing! Gotta get the shiny thing! Maybe when I get it Riddler will call and tell me I'm a cheating idiot!"
I was rather disappointed that getting 100% of Riddler challenges didn't result to a tea party.
I have to go draw more fanart of Riddler. I like him when he's written well, and he is in Arkham Asylum, just the way I like him; clever amoral narcissistic jerk with a slight dark edge.

Tea parties are really more Mad Hatter's thing. (And pedophilia, but I digress)

When I draw comics, tea parties are everyone's thing.
That's like the only kind of social interaction I understand.
(That and doing science)

There's one Riddler comic where he's gone straight and is so bored that he stages crimes so Batman will save him and play chess with him.
This reminds me of that greatly.

The Riddler has done that kind of thing several times. (I'm not sure if I've read that particular comic, though. What was it?)
Riddler is one of my favourites because he just wants attention.

It's his own fault.
If you keep killing people in parties, people will eventually stop inviting you.

Considering what the criminal population of Gotham is like, I'd imagine that interior decorating for criminals is a blooming bussiness.
Although I also like the idea that Eddie makes much of that stuff himself.
Actually, I like to imagine he makes the stuff that you get for solving his challenges himself.
He builds and paints these little action-figures in his basement somewhere so he can give them to Batman to put on a shelf in the Batcave...

He also planned that tea party all by himself. Homemade biscuits and everything.
Darn it, it sounds like he'd make a good wife. Forget Catwoman, Batman. Marry Nigma!

Well, he definitely has some mad planning skills.
"Darn it, it sounds like he'd make a good wife. Forget Catwoman, Batman. Marry Nigma!"
Unfortunately, I can't see it working in the long run.
Batman: "I'm home!"
Riddler: "I can see that. Riddle me this: just where were you?"
B: "Well, I was going to come home earlier, but there was this bank-robbery-"
R : "I knew it!"
B: " Come on, you can't seriously expect me NOT to do my job-"
R : " That's not the point! It's like we don't spend any time together anymore! What was the last time I trapped you in a death-chamber you could only escape by solving some intellectual challenges? Do you expect me to be satisfied with hiding question-mark shaped trophies all over the batcave? You don't even actively look for them, you just pick them up when you happen to stumble to them!"
B: "Just few days ago I asked you to test me with a riddle or two and you refused because you supposedly had a headache!"
Eddie is better off with Scarecrow.
Jon might occasionally fear-gas him and try to mentally break him, but at least he wouldn't interfere with Riddler's career...

Hahaha! Aww, now I really wish this would be an alternate ending in the game. I love the decorations in the tea-party scene and the small cute details, like the question mark on the green cake, the bat mug and the flower is crooked like a question mark (how did he manage to do that??).
And I see you, Joker! You're not invited, you're too mad. xD Very cute scene! Nice work!

Yeah, I mean, if Silent Hill can have UFO endings, why not?
"flower is crooked like a question mark (how did he manage to do that??)"
That doesn't sound to difficult. You could probably bend it with string and wires.
I also like to imagine Eddie has a question-shape shaped bonsai tree somewhere.
"like the question mark on the green cake"
He probably made the cake himself while waiting for Batman to arrive.

It's not like you have to be mad to enjoy them.
To be honest, it probably says something about my social life that the first and favourite example of a social gathering I can think of is a tea party.

A lot depends on how he's written, though.
Which goes for all the American superhero comics that have a lot of writers, but it seems to me The Riddler is one of those characters that are more difficult to write, because the writer would have to come up with those riddles and mysteries and write not only a smart villain, but heroes who are even smarter.
What are your favourite depictions of Eddie?

I also liked how he goes when you've solved most of his riddles:
"You must be cheating! Are you looking them up the Internet!?"
No, Eddie, I'm looking them up this map you gave me. They aren't all that difficult to find once you have the maps.
Yeah, I liked how it ends once you find them all. It's fitting, once his riddles are solved, Batman doesn't even have to confront him. He is a villain that should be on the background, not fought head-on.
Although I wonder what his challenge for the whole Gotham was he was talking about, maybe I'll find out in the sequel?

I always liked the Joker most (I loved him in the comicbooks and I adored Mark Hamills version in the Animated Series), second is The Riddler, Mr Freeze and Poison Ivy.
As a character I didn't fanzy him so much, but I always liked the different Scarecrow designs. It was always interesting to see how they developed the master of fear.
And if you count Catwoman as a villian too, she would be my no. 1 faveourite.
What about you?

I adored Catwoman in the 60's tv-series that was my first impression of Batman.
I also liked Penguin in that show, and the Riddler somewhat.
I've never been a huge fan of Joker. It's not that I hate him, either, maybe it's because he's over-used and not that interesting. When he is in interesting stories, for me the interest usually comes from how he affects other characters, rather than himself.
In the 60's show he and Riddler were too similar, and I preferred The Riddler over him in that show.
I love it how Riddler was developed more into a stylish narcissistic intellectual, and when he's written well he's my favourite.
Also Scarecrow, because I like the exploration of the psychology of fear.
Those two are my two faves, but as they are more intellectual characters, they aren't always written well.
And I recently discovered I ship them as a couple (or the same way I ship Al/Will, anyway), they just work so wonderfully together, their relationship full of twisted mindgames, but still they'd fit together in an odd way...

Ah! Just been playing Arkham Asylum. Intend to play it more when I get every part of my university work done for tonight.
I've been doing some AA sketches. Mainly of all my stealth fails.
But oh, side quests and fun stuff.
It's nice to see Batman smiling for a change.
I like when he gives you the first riddle, I completely walked past the painting and just got the Riddler getting annoyed at me for not figuring it out.
That his design in the game? (Haven't met him yet) That's nice he looks really dapper and sweet.
And I love the detail in his house.
I want a tea party now.

"I like when he gives you the first riddle, I completely walked past the painting and just got the Riddler getting annoyed at me for not figuring it out."
He just doesn't like it when you ignore him.
I figured the first riddle immediately (I am, after all, about as smart as The Riddler, just more modest) but then for a while I forgot about it because I thought the riddles were about there wereabouts of the trophies. (That basically was Riddler's fault for not being clear enough)
"That his design in the game? (Haven't met him yet) That's nice he looks really dapper and sweet."
You don't actually see him in the game, but I used the design on his picture in the files the game gives you about characters. (Although they aren't necessarily the same designs used in-game.)
Except instead of the mask I gave him the glasses he uses in comics, and in the sequel.
Eddie in Arkham Asylum:

Eddie in Arkham City:

I couldn't find all that many screencaps of him, so I assume he stays on the background in that game too. And that's good. He should be manipulating things on the background, he fits so well in a video-game, in that kind of a role they gave him.
Here's a pic of him in one of the Arkham City tie-in-comics:
[link]
His design (and personality) is pretty similar to what he's been like in the comics for a while. Although I don't know how he is after the DC reboot.
"And I love the detail in his house."
It's very lovely, isn't it, having the kind of consistent colour-scheme and a nice motif?

'I figured the first riddle immediately (I am, after all, about as smart as The Riddler, just more modest)'
I'd been too worried about the gun carrying convicts so I walked straight past the painting without realising it was even there.
'You don't actually see him in the game, but I used the design on his picture in the files the game gives you about characters. (Although they aren't necessarily the same designs used in-game.)'
Awwh. I'd seen the interview tapes and profiles, I'd hoping he'd pop up at sometime.
Since also, if you don't see him during the game, then what happens to him at the end?
I like how he looks in the comic, obviously the Riddler normally looks very well dressed but he looks a bit manic which makes a change from how he normally is.
He doesn't seem to show up much in the Animated series (or at least not in the first season, which I'm currently making my way through)
'And that's good. He should be manipulating things on the background, he fits so well in a video-game, in that kind of a role they gave him.'
He does seem the type of villain to fit that role quite well.
'His design (and personality) is pretty similar to what he's been like in the comics for a while. Although I don't know how he is after the DC reboot.'
Oh yes, the reboot. Being more of a marvellite, I'm not completely up to spec on the reboot. I'll probably have to do my best to avoid it.
