Whenever I try to use the marker tool to shade something I see no change even if I'm using significantly darker color. Do you know why that is?
(and yes, I have checked that I'm on right layer so don't even suggest it, lol)

No idea, sorry. Have you tried messing with the "Advanced settings" menu? It should be an expandable menu above the brush preset sizes. It should have a "+" sign next to it.
