Description
So I've been pitted against ~Kweli over at satellitesoda, and the topic was to draw The Amazing Joy Buzzards. But, to add to the challenge, it had to be a band poster, promoting their show at CBGB, the last show before it closes its doors. No small task. So, I worked this puppy up. And, even though I suck hard at graphic design, and fonts, my tavern boys and =skulldozer gave me some pointers on how to work this up to a nice lather.
There is also a "color" version floating about here:[link]
I really don't know which I like more, but this is how it was originally intended, so I submit this for your viewing pleasure.

cause of all the battles going on, everyone else, but us I believe, backed out.
I definetly would have liked to have seen how mine fared against his... different styles and all. But whatever. I got a good piece out of it, and it ended my art slump, so I'm pleased.

Not too bad cheers, just over worked at college as per usual (got our finals in 2 weeks time) so stress levels are pretty high. How about you man? i loved the sketch tavern competition a while back with all those different levels and rounds. Absolutely massive turn out, must've taken ages to organise it. How about you? (diggin the new avatar by the way)

LightBombMike In reply to Captain-Squib [2006-04-15 17:16:46 +0000 UTC]
hahaha... finals are one thing I don't miss at all.
Yeah, the competition is going great. We are down to the last 9 contestants of 76, so it is nearing its end. Then we can go back to life as normal, cause that thing has been a beast! But fun.
Outside of that, I'm doing awesome. The game I am working on will be announced at E3, so I can finally talk about what I am doing then. And I am still working on the comic in my freetime, and that should be out in August.
You should definetly post some work over at the tavern, once your schedule dies down. I'm interested to see what a difference a year of school makes.

here it goes!
the prespective of our first buddy is very flat, graphic and lacks form. pusshhhhhh form pusshhhhh construction.
you are illustrating the action as the moment inbetween the hit. the most exciting moments are the before and the after, there's alot of build up of energy and tension and anticipation!
anything in between doesnt carry as much excitement.
always consider about the physics behind the motion and the most exciting angle you can draw.
the graphic design in regards to a show poster is lacking. this is a great advertisment for a comic, but you need to consider where do show posters get shown??
in a show poster you should only have the band name and the necessary info, you have to remember that these would be on the street and people are going to be walking by and not everyone will want to read too much info.
whatever your designing take these things into consideration, who am i marketing to? who will be seeing them? where will they see them? how much information can i afford to show??

LightBombMike In reply to german-s [2006-04-12 23:49:22 +0000 UTC]
thanks for the crits as always man.
Yeah, I've really been in a mood lately where I've been drawing the actions in between the keys, as you stated. Not sure why... Something about that interests me, and there is a real possibility there to capture more action than just using the extreme, which in a way becomes static, as it starts to become an iconology and hence, boring. I don't think I've got the hang of such a thing at all, capturing the moments inbetween, with as much umph as just an extreme, but it is something I want to work towards more.
